Numbers 25
1 And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab.
Et Israël habitait en Sittim; et le peuple commença à commettre fornication avec les filles de Moab;
2 And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.
et elles invitèrent le peuple aux sacrifices de leurs dieux, et le peuple mangea, et se prosterna devant leurs dieux.
3 And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.
Et Israël s’attacha à Baal-Péor; et la colère de l’Éternel s’embrasa contre Israël.
4 And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.
Et l’Éternel dit à Moïse: Prends tous les chefs du peuple et fais-les pendre devant l’Éternel, à la face du soleil, afin que l’ardeur de la colère de l’Éternel se détourne d’Israël.
5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.
Et Moïse dit aux juges d’Israël: Que chacun de vous tue ses hommes qui se sont attachés à Baal-Péor.
6 And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.
Et voici, un homme des fils d’Israël vint, et amena vers ses frères une Madianite, sous les yeux de Moïse et sous les yeux de toute l’assemblée des fils d’Israël qui pleuraient à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation.
7 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,
Et Phinées, fils d’Éléazar, fils d’Aaron, le sacrificateur, le vit, et il se leva du milieu de l’assemblée, et prit une pique dans sa main,
8 and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
et entra après l’homme d’Israël dans l’intérieur de la tente, et les transperça tous deux, l’homme d’Israël, et la femme, par le bas-ventre; et la plaie s’arrêta de dessus les fils d’Israël.
9 And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.
Et ceux qui moururent de la plaie furent 24 000.
10 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
Et l’Éternel parla à Moïse, disant:
11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
Phinées, fils d’Éléazar, fils d’Aaron, le sacrificateur, a détourné mon courroux de dessus les fils d’Israël, étant jaloux de ma jalousie au milieu d’eux, de sorte que je ne consume pas les fils d’Israël dans ma jalousie.
12 Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!
C’est pourquoi dis: Voici, je lui donne mon alliance de paix;
13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.
et ce sera une alliance de sacrificature perpétuelle, pour lui et pour sa semence après lui, parce qu’il a été jaloux pour son Dieu, et a fait propitiation pour les fils d’Israël.
14 And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.
Et le nom de l’homme d’Israël frappé, qui fut frappé avec la Madianite, était Zimri, fils de Salu, prince d’une maison de père des Siméonites.
15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.
Et le nom de la femme madianite qui fut frappée, était Cozbi, fille de Tsur, chef de peuplade d’une maison de père en Madian.
16 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
Et l’Éternel parla à Moïse, disant:
17 Harass the Midianites, and smite them,
Serrez de près les Madianites, et frappez-les;
18 for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor.
car eux vous ont serrés de près par leurs ruses, par lesquelles ils vous ont séduits dans l’affaire de Péor, et dans l’affaire de Cozbi, fille d’un prince de Madian, leur sœur, qui a été frappée le jour de la plaie, à cause de l’affaire de Péor.
