Numbers 13
1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
L’Éternel parla ainsi à Moïse:
2 Send thou men, that they may search out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel. Ye shall send a man of every tribe of his fathers, each a prince among them.
"Envoie toi-même des hommes pour explorer le pays de Canaan, que je destine aux enfants d’Israël; vous enverrez un homme respectivement par tribu paternelle, tous éminents parmi eux."
3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran: according to the commandment of Jehovah, all of them heads of the children of Israel.
Et Moïse les envoya du désert de Pharan, selon la parole de l’Éternel; c’étaient tous des personnages considérables entre les enfants d’Israël.
4 And these are their names: for the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
Et voici leurs noms: pour la tribu de Ruben, Chammoûa, fils de Zakkour;
5 for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
pour la tribu de Siméon, Chafat, fils de Hori;
6 for the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yefounné;
7 for the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
pour la tribu d’Issachar, Yigal, fils de Joseph;
8 for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun;
pour la tribu d’Ephraïm, Hochéa, fils de Noun;
9 for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Rafou;
10 for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gaddïel, fils de Sodi;
11 for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
pour la tribu de Joseph formant celle de Manassé, Gaddi, fils de Çouci;
12 for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
pour la tribu de Dan, Ammïel, fils de Ghemalli;
13 for the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
pour la tribu d’Asher, Sethour, fils de Mikhaêl;
14 for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
pour la tribu de Nephtali, Nahbi, fils de Vofsi;
15 for the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
pour la tribu de Gad, Gheouêl, fils de Makhi.
16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to search out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Jehoshua.
Tels sont les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya explorer la contrée. (Moïse avait nommé Hochéa, fils de Noun: Josué).
17 And Moses sent them to search out the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up this way by the south and go up into the hill-country,
Moïse leur donna donc mission d’explorer le pays de Canaan, en leur disant: "Dirigez-vous de ce côté, vers le sud, et gravissez la montagne.
18 and ye shall see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell in it, whether they are strong or weak, few or many;
Vous observerez l’aspect de ce pays et le peuple qui l’occupe, s’il est robuste ou faible, peu nombreux ou considérable;
19 and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;
quant au pays qu’il habite, s’il est bon ou mauvais; comment sont les villes où il demeure, des villes ouvertes ou des places fortes;
20 and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there are trees in it, or not. And take courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first grapes.
quant au sol, s’il est gras ou maigre, s’il est boisé ou non. Tâchez aussi d’emporter quelques-uns des fruits du pays." C’Était alors la saison des premiers raisins.
21 And they went up, and searched out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, where one comes towards Hamath.
Et ils s’en allèrent explorer le pays, depuis le désert de Cîn jusqu’à Rehob, vers Hémath.
22 And they went up by the south, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. Now Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.
Ils s’acheminèrent du côté du midi, et l’on parvint jusqu’à Hébrôn, où demeuraient Ahimân, Chêchaï et Talmaï, descendants d’Anak. Hébrôn avait été bâtie sept ans avant Tanis d’Egypte.
23 And they came as far as the valley of Eshcol, and cut down thence a branch with one bunch of grapes, and they bore it between two upon a pole; and [they brought] of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
Arrivés à la vallée d’Echkol, ils y coupèrent un sarment avec une grappe de raisin, qu’ils portèrent à deux au moyen d’une perche, de plus, quelques grenades et quelques figues.
24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the grapes which the children of Israel had cut down there.
On nomma ce lieu vallée d’Echkol, à cause de la grappe qu’y avaient coupée les enfants d’Israël.
25 And they returned from searching out the land after forty days.
Ils revinrent de cette exploration du pays, au bout de quarante jours.
26 And they came, and went to Moses and to Aaron, and to the whole assembly of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to the whole assembly; and shewed them the fruit of the land.
Ils allèrent trouver Moïse, Aaron et toute la communauté des enfants d’Israël, dans le désert de Pharan, à Kadêch. Ils rendirent compte à eux et à toute la communauté, leur montrèrent les fruits de la contrée,
27 And they told him, and said, We came to the land to which thou didst send us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
et lui firent ce récit: "Nous sommes entrés dans le pays où tu nous avais envoyés; oui, vraiment, il ruisselle de lait et de miel, et voici de ses fruits.
28 Only, the people are strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, very great; moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
Mais il est puissant le peuple qui habite ce pays! Puis, les villes sont fortifiées et très grandes, et même nous y avons vu des descendants d’Anak!
29 Amalek dwells in the land of the south; and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill-country; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the side of the Jordan.
Amalec habite la région du midi; le Héthéen, le Jébuséen et l’Amorréen habitent la montagne, et le Cananéen occupe le littoral et la rive du Jourdain."
30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up boldly and possess it, for we are well able to do it.
Caleb fit taire le peuple soulevé contre Moïse, et dit: "Montons, montons-y et prenons-en possession, car certes nous en serons vainqueurs!"
31 But the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.
Mais les hommes qui étaient partis avec lui, dirent: "Nous ne pouvons marcher contre ce peuple, car il est plus fort que nous."
32 And they brought to the children of Israel an evil report of the land which they had searched out, saying, The land, which we have passed through to search it out, is a land that eateth up its inhabitants; and all the people that we have seen in it are men of great stature;
Et ils décrièrent le pays qu’ils avaient exploré, en disant aux enfants d’Israël: "Le pays que nous avons parcouru pour l’explorer est un pays qui dévorerait ses habitants; quant au peuple que nous y avons vu, ce sont tous gens de haute taille.
33 and there have we seen giants — the sons of Anak are of the giants — and we were in our sight as grasshoppers, and so we were also in their sight.
Nous y avons même vu les Nefilîm, les enfants d’Anak, descendants des Nefilîm: nous étions à nos propres yeux comme des sauterelles, et ainsi étions-nous à leurs yeux."
