Nehemiah 5
1 And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.
Or si levò un gran lamento da parte di que’ del popolo e delle loro mogli contro ai Giudei, loro fratelli.
2 And there were that said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many, and we must procure corn that we may eat and live.
Ve n’eran che dicevano: “Noi, i nostri figliuoli e le nostre figliuole siamo numerosi; ci si dia del grano perché possiam mangiare e vivere!”
3 And there were that said, We have had to pledge our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses, that we might procure corn in the dearth.
Altri dicevano: “Impegnamo i nostri campi, le nostre vigne e le nostre case per assicurarci del grano durante la carestia!”
4 And there were that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and vineyards;
Altri ancora dicevano: “Noi abbiam preso del danaro a imprestito sui nostri campi e sulle nostre vigne per pagare il tributo del re.
5 yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and behold, we must bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage [already]; neither is it in the power of our hand [to redeem them], for other men have our fields and our vineyards.
Ora la nostra carne è come la carne de’ nostri fratelli, i nostri figliuoli son come i loro figliuoli; ed ecco che dobbiam sottoporre i nostri figliuoli e le nostre figliuole alla schiavitù, e alcune delle nostre figliuole son già ridotte schiave; e noi non possiamo farci nulla, giacché i nostri campi e le nostre vigne sono in mano d’altri”.
6 And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.
Quand’udii i loro lamenti e queste parole, io m’indignai forte.
7 And I consulted with myself; and I remonstrated with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother! And I set a great assembly against them.
E, dopo matura riflessione, ripresi aspramente i notabili e i magistrati, e dissi loro: “Come! voi prestate su pegno ai vostri fratelli?” E convocai contro di loro una grande raunanza,
8 And I said to them, We, according to our ability, have redeemed our brethren the Jews, who were sold to the nations; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? And they were silent and found no answer.
e dissi loro: “Noi, secondo la nostra possibilità, abbiamo riscattato i nostri fratelli Giudei che s’eran venduti ai pagani; e voi stessi vendereste i vostri fratelli, ed essi si venderebbero a noi!” Allora quelli si tacquero, e non seppero che rispondere.
9 And I said, The thing that ye do is not good. Ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, so as not to be the reproach of the nations our enemies?
Io dissi pure: “Quello che voi fate non è ben fatto. Non dovreste voi camminare nel timore del nostro Dio per non essere oltraggiati dai pagani nostri nemici?
10 I also, my brethren and my servants, we might exact usury of them, money and corn. I pray you, let us leave off this usury.
Anch’io e i miei fratelli e i miei servi abbiam dato loro in prestito danaro e grano. Vi prego condoniamo loro questo debito!
11 Restore, I pray you, to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive-gardens, and their houses, also the hundredth [part] of the money, and of the corn, the wine and the oil, that ye have exacted of them.
Rendete loro oggi i loro campi, le loro vigne, i loro uliveti e le loro case, e la centesima del danaro, del grano, del vino e dell’olio, che avete esatto da loro come interesse”.
12 And they said, We will restore [them], and will require nothing of them; so will we do, as thou hast said. And I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.
Quelli risposero: “Restituiremo tutto, e non domanderemo più nulla da loro; faremo come tu dici”. Allora chiamai i sacerdoti, e in loro presenza li feci giurare che avrebbero mantenuta la promessa.
13 Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house and from his earnings, that performeth not this promise: even thus be he shaken out and emptied! And all the congregation said, Amen! And they praised Jehovah. And the people did according to this promise.
Io scossi inoltre il mio mantello, e dissi: “Così scuota Iddio dalla sua casa e dai suoi beni chiunque non avrà mantenuto questa promessa, e così sia egli scosso e resti senza nulla!” E tutta la raunanza disse: “Amen!” E celebrarono l’Eterno. E il popolo mantenne la promessa.
14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.
Di più, dal giorno che il re mi stabilì loro governatore nel paese di Giuda, dal ventesimo anno fino al trentaduesimo anno del re Artaserse, durante dodici anni, io e i miei fratelli non mangiammo della provvisione assegnata al governatore.
15 But the former governors that were before me had been chargeable to the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver: even their servants bore rule over the people. But I did not so, because of the fear of God.
I governatori che mi avean preceduto aveano gravato il popolo, ricevendone pane e vino oltre a quaranta sicli d’argento; perfino i loro servi angariavano il popolo; ma io non ho fatto così, perché ho avuto timor di Dio.
16 Yea, also I applied myself to this work of the wall, and we bought no fields; and all my servants were gathered thither for the work.
Anzi ho messo mano ai lavori di riparazione di queste mura, e non abbiamo comprato verun campo, e tutta la mia gente s’è raccolta là a lavorare.
17 And there were at my table a hundred and fifty of the Jews and the rulers, besides those that came to us from among the nations that were about us.
E avevo alla mia mensa centocinquanta uomini, Giudei e magistrati, oltre quelli che venivano a noi dalle nazioni circonvicine.
18 And that which was prepared daily was one ox [and] six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days all sorts of wine in abundance. Yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor; for the service was heavy upon this people.
E quel che mi si preparava per ogni giorno era un bue, sei capri scelti di bestiame minuto, e dell’uccellame; e ogni dieci giorni si preparava ogni sorta di vini in abbondanza; e, nondimeno, io non ho mai chiesta la provvisione assegnata al governatore, perché il popolo era già gravato abbastanza a motivo de’ lavori.
19 Remember for me, my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.
O mio Dio, ricordati, per farmi del bene, di tutto quello che ho fatto per questo popolo.
