Matthew 5
1 But seeing the crowds, he went up into the mountain, and having sat down, his disciples came to him;
Jésus voyant la foule, monta sur la montagne, et, lorsqu’il se fut assis, ses disciples s’approchèrent de lui,
2 and, having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying,
Et ouvrant sa bouche, il les instruisais, disant:
3 Blessed [are] the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.
Bienheureux les pauvres d’esprit, parce qu’à eux appartient le royaume des cieux.
4 Blessed they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Bienheureux ceux qui sont doux, parce qu’ils posséderont la terre.
5 Blessed the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Bienheureux ceux qui pleurent, parce qu’ils seront consolés.
6 Blessed they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Bienheureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, parce qu’ils seront rassasiés.
7 Blessed the merciful, for they shall find mercy.
Bienheureux les miséricordieux, parce qu’ils obtiendront eux-mêmes miséricorde.
8 Blessed the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Bienheureux ceux qui ont
9 Blessed the peace-makers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Bienheureux les pacifiques, parce qu’ils seront appelés enfants de Dieu.
10 Blessed they who are persecuted on account of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.
Bienheureux ceux qui souffrent persécution pour la justice, parce qu’à eux appartient le royaume des cieux.
11 Blessed are ye when they may reproach and persecute you, and say every wicked thing against you, lying, for my sake.
Vous êtes heureux, lorsque les hommes vous maudissent et vous persécutent, et disent faussement toute sorte de mal de vous, à cause de moi.
12 Rejoice and exult, for your reward is great in the heavens; for thus have they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Réjouissez-vous et tressaillez de joie, parce que votre récompense est grande dans les cieux; car c’est ainsi qu’ils ont persécuté les prophètes qui ont été avant vous.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have become insipid, wherewith shall it be salted? It is no longer fit for anything but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot by men.
Vous êtes le sel de la terre. Que si le sel perd sa vertu, avec quoi le salera-t-on? Il n’est plus bon qu’à être jeté dehors et foulé aux pieds par les hommes.
14 Ye are the light of the world: a city situated on the top of a mountain cannot be hid.
Vous êtes la lumière du monde. Une ville ne peut être cachée, quand elle est située sur une montagne.
15 Nor do [men] light a lamp and put it under the bushel, but upon the lamp-stand, and it shines for all who are in the house.
Et on n’allume point une lampe pour la mettre sous le boisseau, mais sur un chandelier, afin qu’elle éclaire tous ceux qui sont dans la maison.
16 Let your light thus shine before men, so that they may see your upright works, and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.
Qu’ainsi donc luise votre lumière devant les hommes, afin qu’ils voient vos bonnes œuvres et qu’ils glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux.
17 Think not that I am come to make void the law or the prophets; I am not come to make void, but to fulfil.
Ne pensez pas que je sois venu abolir la loi ou les prophètes: je ne suis pas venu les abolir, mais les accomplir.
18 For verily I say unto you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, one iota or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all come to pass.
Car, en vérité je vous le dis, jusqu’à ce que le ciel et la terre passent, un seul iota ou un seul point de la loi ne passera pas que tout ne soit accompli.
19 Whosoever then shall do away with one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whosoever shall practise and teach [them], he shall be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.
Celui donc qui violera l’un de ces moindres commandements, et enseignera ainsi aux hommes, sera appelé très petit dans le royaume des cieux; mais celui qui fera et enseignera, celui-là sera appelé grand dans le royaume des cieux.
20 For I say unto you, that unless your righteousness surpass [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of the heavens.
Car je vous dis que si votre justice n’est plus abondante que celle des Scribes et des Pharisiens, vous n’entrerez point dans le royaume des cieux,
21 Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill; but whosoever shall kill shall be subject to the judgment.
Vous avez entendu qu’il a été dit aux anciens: Tu ne tueras point; car celui qui tuera sera soumis au jugement.
22 But I say unto you, that every one that is lightly angry with his brother shall be subject to the judgment; but whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be subject to [be called before] the sanhedrim; but whosoever shall say, Fool, shall be subject to the penalty of the hell of fire. Mais moi je vous dis que quiconque se met en colère contre son frère sera soumis au jugement. Et celui qui dira à son frère: Raca, sera soumis au conseil. Mais celui qui lui dira: Fou, sera soumis à la géhenne du feu. (Geenna g1067)
23 If therefore thou shouldest offer thy gift at the altar, and there shouldest remember that thy brother has something against thee,
Si donc tu présentes ton offrande à l’autel, et que là tu te souviennes que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi,
24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and first go, be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Laisse là ton don devant l’autel, et va d’abord te réconcilier avec ton frère, et alors, revenant, tu offriras ton don.
25 Make friends with thine adverse party quickly, whilst thou art in the way with him; lest some time the adverse party deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
Accorde-toi au plus tôt avec ton adversaire pendant que tu chemines avec lui, de peur que ton adversaire ne te livre au juge, et que le juge ne te livre au ministre, et que tu ne sois jeté en prison.
26 Verily I say to thee, Thou shalt in no wise come out thence till thou hast paid the last farthing.
En vérité, je te le dis, tu ne sortiras point de là que tu n’aies payé jusqu’au dernier quart d’un as.
27 Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Vous avez entendu qu’il a été dit aux anciens: Tu ne commettras point d’adultère.
28 But I say unto you, that every one who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Mais moi je vous dis que quiconque aura regardé une femme pour la convoiter, a déjà commis l’adultère dans son cœur.
29 But if thy right eye be a snare to thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. (Geenna g1067)
Que si ton œil droit te scandalise, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi; car il vaut mieux pour toi qu’un de tes membres périsse, que si tout ton corps était jeté dans la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
30 And if thy right hand be a snare to thee, cut it off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. (Geenna g1067)
Et si ta main droite te scandalise, coupe-la et la jette loin de toi; car il vaut mieux pour toi qu’un de tes membres périsse, que si tout ton corps était jeté dans la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
31 It has been said too, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a letter of divorce.
Il a été dit aussi: Quiconque renvoie sa femme, qu’il lui donne un acte de répudiation.
32 But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for cause of fornication, makes her commit adultery, and whosoever marries one that is put away commits adultery.
Et moi je vous dis que quiconque renvoie sa femme hors le cas d’adultère, la rend adultère: et quiconque épouse une femme renvoyée, commet un adultère.
33 Again, ye have heard that it has been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt render to the Lord what thou hast sworn.
Vous avez encore entendu qu’il a été dit aux anciens: Tu ne te parjureras point, mais tu tiendras au Seigneur tes serments.
34 But I say unto you, Do not swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is [the] throne of God;
Et moi je vous dis de ne jurer en aucune façon, ni par le ciel, parce que c’est le trône de Dieu;
35 nor by the earth, because it is [the] footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is [the] city of the great King.
Ni par la terre, parce que c’est l’escabeau de ses pieds; ni par Jérusalem, parce que c’est la ville du grand roi;
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
Ne jure pas non plus par ta tête, parce que tu ne peux rendre un seul de tes cheveux blanc ou noir.
37 But let your word be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; but what is more than these is from evil.
Que votre langage soit: Oui, oui: Non, non; car ce qui est de plus, vient du mal.
38 Ye have heard that it has been said, Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.
Vous avez entendu qu’il a été dit: OEil pour œil et dent pour dent,
39 But I say unto you, not to resist evil; but whoever shall strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other;
Et moi je vous dis de ne point résister aux mauvais traitements; mais si quelqu’un te frappe sur la joue droite, présente-lui encore l’autre.
40 and to him that would go to law with thee and take thy body coat, leave him thy cloak also.
Et à celui qui veut l’appeler en justice pour t’enlever ta tunique, abandonne-lui encore ton manteau.
41 And whoever will compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.
Et quiconque te contraindra de faire avec lui mille pas, fais-en deux autres mille.
42 To him that asks of thee give, and from him that desires to borrow of thee turn not away.
Donne à qui te demande, et ne te détourne point de celui qui veut emprunter de toi.
43 Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy.
Vous avez entendu qu’il a été dit: Tu aimeras ton prochain et tu haïras ton ennemi.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, [bless those who curse you, ] do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who [insult you and] persecute you,
Mais moi je vous dis: Aimez vos ennemis, faites du bien à ceux qui vous haïssent, et priez pour ceux qui vous persécutent et vous calomnient;
45 that ye may be [the] sons of your Father who is in [the] heavens; for he makes his sun rise on evil and good, and sends rain on just and unjust.
Afin que vous soyez les enfants de votre Père qui est dans les cieux, qui fait lever son soleil sur les bons et sur les méchants, et pleuvoir sur les justes et les injustes.
46 For if ye should love those who love you, what reward have ye? Do not also the tax-gatherers the same?
Car si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense aurez-vous? Les publicains ne le font-ils pas aussi?
47 And if ye should salute your brethren only, what do ye extraordinary? Do not also the Gentiles the same?
Et si vous saluez vos frères seulement, que faites-vous de surcroît? Les païens ne le font-ils pas aussi?
48 Be ye therefore perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Soyez donc parfaits, vous, comme votre Père céleste est parfait.
