Luke 7
1 And when he had completed all his words in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
Lorsqu'il eut achevé de parler au peuple qui l'écoutait, il entra dans Capernaoum.
2 And a certain centurion's bondman who was dear to him was ill and about to die;
Or un centurion avait un serviteur, auquel il tenait beaucoup, qui était malade et sur le point de mourir.
3 and having heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, begging him that he might come and save his bondman.
Ayant entendu parler de Jésus, il lui députa quelques anciens des Juifs, pour le prier de venir guérir son serviteur.
4 But they, being come to Jesus, besought him diligently, saying, He is worthy to whom thou shouldest grant this,
Ceux-ci, étant arrivés vers Jésus, le sollicitaient instamment, disant: «Il mérite bien que tu lui accordes sa demande,
5 for he loves our nation, and himself has built the synagogue for us.
car il aime notre nation, et c'est lui qui nous a bâti la synagogue.»
6 And Jesus went with them. But already, when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent to him friends, saying to him, Lord, do not trouble thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof.
Jésus s'achemina donc avec eux. Il n'était plus qu'à une petite distance de la maison, lorsque le centurion lui envoya dire par des amis: «Seigneur, ne te donne pas tant de peine, car je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit.
7 Wherefore neither did I count myself worthy to come to thee. But say by a word and my servant shall be healed.
C'est pour cela que je n'ai pas jugé devoir me rendre moi-même auprès de toi; mais dis un mot, et que mon serviteur soit guéri.
8 For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers, and I say to this [one], Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my bondman, Do this, and he does [it].
En effet, moi qui suis placé sous le commandement d'autrui, j'ai des soldats sous mes ordres, et je dis à celui-ci: «Va, » et il va; et à un autre: «Viens, » et il vient; et à mon esclave: «Fais cela, » et il le fait.»
9 And Jesus hearing this wondered at him, and turning to the crowd following him said, I say to you, Not even in Israel have I found so great faith.
En entendant ces paroles, Jésus admira cet homme, et, se retournant, il dit à la foule qui le suivait: «Je vous déclare que je n'ai pas trouvé une aussi grande foi même en Israël.»
10 And they who had been sent returning to the house found the bondman, who was ill, in good health.
A leur retour dans la maison du centurion, les envoyés trouvèrent en santé le serviteur qui était malade.
11 And it came to pass afterwards he went into a city called Nain, and many of his disciples and a great crowd went with him.
Le lendemain, Jésus se rendit dans une ville appelée Nain; ses disciples, eu assez grand nombre, et une grande foule cheminaient avec lui.
12 And as he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother, and she a widow, and a very considerable crowd of the city [was] with her.
Au moment où il arrivait près de la porte de la ville, on portait en terre un mort, fils unique d'une veuve, et une foule considérable de gens de la ville accompagnaient cette femme.
13 And the Lord, seeing her, was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, Weep not;
Le Seigneur, en la voyant, fut ému de compassion pour elle, et lui dit: «Ne pleure pas; »
14 and coming up he touched the bier, and the bearers stopped. And he said, Youth, I say to thee, Wake up.
puis, s'étant approché, il toucha le cercueil, et les porteurs s'arrêtèrent; alors il dit: «Jeune homme, je te le commande, lève-toi.»
15 And the dead sat up and began to speak; and he gave him to his mother.
Et le mort se mit sur son séant, et commença à parler; et Jésus le rendit à sa mère.
16 And fear seized on all, and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet has been raised up amongst us; and God has visited his people.
Un sentiment de crainte s'empara d'eux tous, et ils glorifiaient Dieu, disant: «Un grand prophète s'est élevé parmi nous, » et «Dieu a visité son peuple.»
17 And this report went out in all Judaea concerning him, and in all the surrounding country.
Ce propos sur Jésus courut dans la Judée tout entière et dans tout le pays d'alentour.
18 And the disciples of John brought him word concerning all these things:
Jean ayant été informé de toutes ces choses par ses disciples,
19 and John, having called two of his disciples, sent to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that is coming, or are we to wait for another?
en fit venir deux, et les envoya vers le Seigneur, pour lui dire: «Es-tu celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?»
20 But the men having come to him said, John the baptist has sent us to thee, saying, Art thou he that is coming, or are we to wait for another?
Quand ces hommes furent arrivés vers Jésus, ils dirent: «Jean-Baptiste nous a envoyés vers toi, pour te dire: «Es-tu celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre.»
21 In that hour he healed many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and to many blind he granted sight.
A ce moment même, Jésus venait de guérir plusieurs personnes de maladies, d'infirmités et de mauvais esprits, et de rendre la vue à plusieurs aveugles.
22 And Jesus answering said to them, Go, bring back word to John of what ye have seen and heard: that blind see, lame walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf hear, dead are raised, poor are evangelized;
Il répondit aux envoyés: «Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous avez vu et entendu: les aveugles voient, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont rendus nets, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, la bonne nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres.
23 and blessed is whosoever shall not be offended in me.
Heureux celui pour qui je ne serai pas une occasion de chute!»
24 And the messengers of John having departed, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken by the wind?
Quand les messagers de Jean furent partis, Jésus se mit à parler de Jean au peuple: «Qu'êtes- vous allés contempler au désert? un roseau agité par le vent?
25 But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in delicate garments? Behold, those who are in splendid clothing and live luxuriously are in the courts of kings.
Mais encore, qu'êtes-vous allés voir? un homme vêtu d'habits somptueux? Vous savez que ceux qui portent des habits magnifiques et qui vivent dans le luxe, sont dans les palais des rois.
26 But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and [what is] more excellent than a prophet.
Mais, qu'êtes-vous allés voir? un prophète? — Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu'un prophète.
27 This is he concerning whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee;
C'est celui dont il est écrit: «Voici, j’envoie mon messager devant ta face, pour préparer le chemin devant toi.»
28 for I say unto you, Among them that are born of women a greater [prophet] is no one than John [the baptist]; but he who is a little one in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
Car je vous dis, que parmi ceux qui sont nés de femme, il n'y a point de plus grand prophète que Jean; toutefois le plus petit dans le royaume de Dieu est plus grand que lui.
29 (And all the people who heard [it], and the tax-gatherers, justified God, having been baptised with the baptism of John;
Tout le peuple qui l'a écouté, ainsi que les publicains, ont rendu justice à Dieu, en se faisant baptiser du baptême de Jean,
30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers rendered null as to themselves the counsel of God, not having been baptised by him.)
au lieu que les pharisiens et les docteurs de la Loi ont fait échouer pour eux-mêmes le plan de Dieu, en ne se faisant pas baptiser par lui.
31 To whom therefore shall I liken the men of this generation, and to whom are they like?
«A qui donc comparerai-je les hommes de cette génération, et à qui ressemblent-ils?
32 They are like children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another and saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
Ils ressemblent aux enfants qui sont assis dans la place publique, et qui disent, en s'apostrophant les uns les autres: «Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n'avez pas dansé; nous vous avons chanté des complaintes, et vous n'avez pas pleuré.»
33 For John the baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and ye say, He has a demon.
En effet, Jean est venu ne mangeant point de pain, et ne buvant point de vin, et vous dites: «C'est un possédé.»
34 The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and ye say, Behold an eater and wine-drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners;
Le Fils de l'homme est venu mangeant et buvant, et vous dites: «C'est un mangeur et un buveur, un ami des publicains et des pécheurs»:
35 and wisdom has been justified of all her children.
et pourtant la Sagesse a été justifiée par tous ses enfants.»
36 But one of the Pharisees begged him that he would eat with him. And entering into the house of the Pharisee he took his place at table;
Un pharisien invita Jésus à manger avec lui, et Jésus étant entré dans la maison du pharisien, prit place à table.
37 and behold, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, and knew that he was sitting at meat in the house of the Pharisee, having taken an alabaster box of myrrh,
Alors une femme qui menait une vie déréglée dans la ville, apprenant que Jésus était à table dans la maison de ce pharisien, apporta un flacon d'albâtre plein de parfum;
38 and standing at his feet behind [him] weeping, began to wash his feet with tears; and she wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed [them] with the myrrh.
et se tenant derrière lui, à ses pieds, tout en pleurs, elle se mit à mouiller ses pieds de ses larmes et à les essuyer avec les cheveux de sa tête; elle couvrait ses pieds de baisers et les oignait de parfum.
39 And the Pharisee who had invited him, seeing it, spoke with himself saying, This [person] if he were a prophet would have known who and what the woman is who touches him, for she is a sinner.
A cette vue, le pharisien qui l'avait invité, se dit en lui-même: «Si cet homme était prophète, il saurait qui est la personne qui le touche, et quelle sorte de femme, c'est une femme de mauvaise vie.»
40 And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. And he says, Teacher, say [it].
Jésus prit la parole, et lui dit: «Simon, j'ai quelque chose à te dire.» — «Maître, parle, » dit-il. —
41 There were two debtors of a certain creditor: one owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty;
«Un créancier avait deux débiteurs, l'un lui devait cinq cents deniers, l'autre cinquante.
42 but as they had nothing to pay, he forgave both of them [their debt]: [say, ] which of them therefore will love him most?
Comme ils ne pouvaient payer, il les tint quitte tous les deux. Dis-moi lequel des deux l'aimera le plus?»
43 And Simon answering said, I suppose he to whom he forgave the most. And he said to him, Thou hast rightly judged.
Simon répondit: «Je pense que c'est celui auquel il a le plus remis.» Jésus lui dit: «Tu as bien jugé.»
44 And turning to the woman he said to Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house; thou gavest me not water on my feet, but she has washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with her hair.
Puis, se tournant vers la femme, il dit à Simon: «Tu vois cette femme? Je suis entré dans ta maison; tu ne m'as point versé d'eau sur les pieds, mais elle a mouillé mes pieds de ses larmes et les a essuyés avec ses cheveux.
45 Thou gavest me not a kiss, but she from the time I came in has not ceased kissing my feet.
Tu ne m'as point donné de baiser, mais depuis que je suis entré, elle n'a cessé de me baiser les pieds.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint, but she has anointed my feet with myrrh.
Tu n'as pas oint ma tête d'huile, mais elle a oint mes pieds de parfum.
47 For which cause I say to thee, Her many sins are forgiven; for she loved much; but he to whom little is forgiven loves little.
Aussi je te dis que ses nombreux péchés lui ont été pardonnés, car elle a beaucoup aimé; tandis que celui à qui l'on pardonne peu, aime peu.»
48 And he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven.
Il dit à la femme: «Tes péchés te sont pardonnés.»
49 And they that were with [them] at table began to say within themselves, Who is this who forgives also sins?
Et les convives commencèrent à dire en eux-mêmes: «Qui est cet homme qui ose pardonner les péchés?»
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace.
Mais Jésus dit à la femme: «Ta foi t'a sauvée; va en paix.»
