Lamentations 4
1 How is the gold become dim! the most pure gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary poured out at the top of all the streets!
ああ、黄金は光を失い、純金は色を変じ、聖所の石はすべてのちまたのかどに投げ捨てられた。
2 The sons of Zion, so precious, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!
ああ、精金にも比すべきシオンのいとし子らは、陶器師の手のわざである土の器のようにみなされる。
3 Even the jackals offer the breast, they give suck to their young; the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.
山犬さえも乳ぶさをたれて、その子に乳を飲ませる。ところが、わが民の娘は、荒野のだちょうのように無慈悲になった。
4 The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst; the young children ask bread, no man breaketh it unto them.
乳のみ子の舌はかわいて、上あごに、ひたとつき、幼な子らはパンを求めても、これに与える者がない。
5 They that fed delicately are desolate in the streets; they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dung-hills.
うまい物を食べていた者は、落ちぶれて、ちまたにおり、紫の着物で育てられた者も、今は灰だまりの上に伏している。
6 And the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the reward of the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands were violently laid upon her.
わが民の娘のうけた懲しめは、ソドムの罰よりも大きかった。ソドムは昔、人の手によらないで、またたくまに滅ぼされたのだ。
7 Her Nazarites were purer than snow, whiter than milk; they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their figure was as sapphire.
わが民の君たちは雪よりも清らかに、乳よりも白く、そのからだは、さんごよりも赤く、その姿の美しさはサファイヤのようであった。
8 Their visage is darker than blackness, they are not known in the streets; their skin cleaveth to their bones, it is withered, it is become like a stick.
今はその顔はすすよりも黒く、町の中にいても人に知られず、その皮膚は縮んで骨につき、かわいて枯れ木のようになった。
9 The slain with the sword are happier than the slain with hunger; for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.
つるぎで殺される者は、飢えて死ぬ者よりもさいわいである。彼らは田畑の産物の欠乏によって、刺された者のように衰え行くからである。
10 The hands of pitiful women have boiled their own children: they were their meat in the ruin of the daughter of my people.
わが民の娘の滅びる時には情深い女たちさえも、手ずから自分の子どもを煮て、それを食物とした。
11 Jehovah hath accomplished his fury; he hath poured out his fierce anger, and hath kindled a fire in Zion, which hath consumed the foundations thereof.
主はその憤りをことごとく漏らし、激しい怒りをそそぎ、シオンに火を燃やして、その礎までも焼き払われた。
12 The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should enter into the gates of Jerusalem.
地の王たちも、世の民らもみな、エルサレムの門に、あだや敵が、討ち入ろうとは信じなかった。
13 [It is] for the sins of her prophets, [and] the iniquities of her priests, who have shed the blood of the righteous in the midst of her.
これはその預言者たちの罪のため、その祭司たちの不義のためであった。彼らは義人の血をその町の中に流した者である。
14 They wandered about blind in the streets; they were polluted with blood, so that men could not touch their garments.
彼らは盲人のように、ちまたにさまよい、血で汚れている。だれもその衣にさわることができない。
15 They cried unto them, Depart! Unclean! Depart! depart, touch not! When they fled away, and wandered about, it was said among the nations, They shall no more sojourn [there].
人々は彼らにむかって、「去れよ、けがらわしい」、「去れよ、去れよ、さわるな」と叫んだので、彼らは逃げ去って放浪者となったが、異邦人の中でも人々は「もうわれわれのうちに宿ってはならない」と言った。
16 The face of Jehovah hath divided them; he will no more regard them. They respected not the persons of the priests, they favoured not the aged.
主はみずから彼らを散らして、再び彼らを顧みず、祭司を尊ばず、長老をいたわられなかった。
17 Our eyes still failed for our vain help; in our watching, we have watched for a nation that did not save.
われわれの目は、むなしく助けを待ち望んで疲れ衰えた。われわれは待ち望んだが、救を与え得ない国びとを待ち望んだ。
18 They hunted our steps, that we could not go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.
人々がわれわれの歩みをうかがうので、われわれは自分の町の中をも、歩くことができなかった。われわれの終りは近づいた、日は尽きた。われわれの終りが来たからである。
19 Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens; they chased us hotly upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.
われわれを追う者は空のはげたかよりも速く、彼らは山でわれわれを追い立て、野でわれわれを待ち伏せる。
20 The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Jehovah, was taken in their pits; of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.
われわれが鼻の息とたのんだ者、主に油そそがれた者は、彼らの落し穴で捕えられた。彼はわれわれが「異邦人の中でもその陰に生きるであろう」と思った者である。
21 Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz: the cup shall pass also unto thee; thou shalt be drunken, and make thyself naked.
ウズの地に住むエドムの娘よ、喜び楽しめ、あなたにもまた杯がめぐって行く、あなたも酔って裸になる。
22 The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity. He will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will discover thy sins.
シオンの娘よ、あなたの不義の罰は終った。主は重ねてあなたを捕え移されない。エドムの娘よ、主はあなたの不義を罰し、あなたの罪をあらわされる。
