Joshua 9
1 And it came to pass when all the kings who were on this side the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and along all the coast of the great sea as far as opposite to Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard [of it],
Quand ces faits vinrent à la connaissance des rois qui habitaient la rive du Jourdain, la montagne, la vallée et toute la côte de la grande mer jusqu’au Liban, Héthéens et Amorréens, Cananéens, Phérézéens, Hévéens et Jébuséens,
2 that they assembled together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
ils réunirent leurs forces, d’un commun accord, pour faire la guerre à Josué et à Israël.
3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,
Mais les habitants de Gabaon, en apprenant comment Josué avait traité Jéricho et Aï,
4 then they also acted with craft, and they went prepared as on a journey, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-flasks, old and rent and tied up;
eurent recours, de leur côté, à un stratagème. Ils se mirent en route, munis de provisions, chargèrent leurs ânes de vieux sacs, d’outres à vin usées, crevées et recousues;
5 and old and patched sandals upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry [and] mouldy.
se chaussèrent de vieux souliers rapiécés, endossèrent des vêtements hors d’usage, et n’emportèrent comme provision que du pain dur et tout moisi.
6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, From a far country are we come; and now make a covenant with us.
lls s’en allèrent ainsi trouver Josué, au campement de Ghilgal, et lui dirent, à lui et aux Israélites: "Nous venons d’un pays lointain, et vous prions de conclure une alliance avec nous."
7 And the men of Israel said to the Hivite, Perhaps thou dwellest in the midst of us, and how should I make a covenant with thee?
Les Israélites répondirent à ces Hévéens: "Peut-être habitez-vous dans notre voisinage: comment pourrions-nous faire alliance avec vous?"
8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said to them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?
Ils dirent alors à Josué: "Nous sommes tes serviteurs." Et Josué leur demanda: "Qui êtes-vous? D’Où venez-vous?"
9 And they said to him, From a very far country are thy servants come, because of the name of Jehovah thy God; for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
Ils lui répondirent: "Tes serviteurs sont venus d’un pays très éloigné, en l’honneur de l’Eternel ton Dieu. Car nous avons entendu parler de lui et de tout ce qu’il a fait en Egypte,
10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon the king of Heshbon, and to Og the king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
et de ce qu’il a fait aux deux rois amorréens qui demeuraient au-delà du Jourdain, à Sihôn, roi de Hesbon, et à Og, roi du Basan, qui résidait à Astaroth;
11 And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, Take victuals in your hand for the way, and go to meet them, and say to them, We are your servants, and now make a covenant with us.
et alors nos anciens et tous les gens de notre pays nous ont dit: "Emportez des provisions de voyage, allez les trouver et dites-leur: "Nous sommes vos serviteurs, faites un pacte avec nous."
12 This our bread we took warm for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; and now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy.
Voyez notre pain: nous l’avions emporté frais de nos demeures, quand nous sommes partis pour aller chez vous; et maintenant le voilà tout rassis, piqué de moisissure.
13 And these flasks of wine which we filled new, behold, they are rent; and these our garments and our sandals are become old by reason of the very long journey.
Voyez ces outres à vin, que nous avions remplies neuves, maintenant toutes déchirées; et ces vêtements et ces chaussures, usés par l’extrême longueur du voyage!"
14 And the men took of their victuals, but they did not inquire at the mouth of Jehovah.
On accepta de leurs provisions, sans avoir consulté le Seigneur.
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the princes of the assembly swore unto them.
Josué leur accorda la paix, leur garantit par un traité la, vie sauve, et les phylarques de la communauté leur en firent le serment.
16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt in their midst.
Or, trois jours après la conclusion de ce traité, on apprit que c’était un peuple voisin, et qu’il demeurait dans la région même.
17 And the children of Israel journeyed, and came to their cities on the third day; and their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.
Car les Israélites, ayant levé le camp, arrivèrent dans leurs villes dès le troisième jour. (Ces villes étaient: Gabaon, Kefira, Beérôth et Kiryath-Yearim. )
18 And the children of Israel did not smite them, because the princes of the assembly had sworn unto them by Jehovah the God of Israel. Then all the assembly murmured against the princes.
Toutefois, les Israélites ne sévirent pas contre eux, parce que les phylarques leur avaient fait serment par l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël; mais toute la communauté murmura contre les phylarques.
19 And all the princes said to all the assembly, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them.
Ceux-ci dirent à la communauté réunie: "Nous leur avons juré par l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël; dès lors, nous ne pouvons toucher à leurs personnes.
20 This we will do to them, and let them live, lest wrath come upon us, because of the oath which we swore unto them.
Voici ce que nous leur ferons. Il faut les laisser vivre, si nous ne voulons provoquer la colère divine, à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait."
21 And the princes said to them, Let them live. And they were hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the assembly; as the princes had said to them.
Alors les phylarques leur dirent à quelle condition ils garderaient la vie: ils restèrent, comme fendeurs de bois et porteurs d’eau, au service de la communauté, selon ce que les phylarques leur enjoignirent.
22 And Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you; whereas ye dwell in our midst?
Josué les manda et leur parla ainsi: "Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés en vous prétendant bien éloignés de nous, tandis que vous demeurez au milieu de nous?
23 And now ye are cursed, and ye shall never cease to be bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God.
Eh bien donc! Vous êtes maudits, et vous ne cesserez jamais d’être attachés, comme fendeurs de bois et porteurs d’eau, à la maison de mon Dieu!"
24 And they answered Joshua and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants how that Jehovah thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing.
Ils répondirent à Josué: "C’Est que tes serviteurs avaient été informés de ce que l’Eternel, ton Dieu, a déclaré à Moïse, son serviteur, qu’il vous donnait tout ce pays et qu’il en ferait disparaître tous les habitants devant vous; alors, nous avons tremblé pour notre vie et nous avons employé cet expédient.
25 And now behold, we are in thy hand: as it is good and right in thine eyes to do to us, do.
Maintenant nous sommes en ton pouvoir; ce qu’il te semble bon et juste de nous faire, fais-le."
26 And he did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, and they did not slay them.
Ainsi leur fit-il, et il les sauva de la main des enfants d’Israël, qui ne les mirent pas à mort.
27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the assembly, and for the altar of Jehovah, to this day, in the place which he should choose.
De ce jour, Josué les établit comme fendeurs de bois et porteurs d’eau (ce qu’ils sont restés jusqu’à ce jour), pour la communauté et pour l’autel du Seigneur, en tout endroit que Dieu adopterait pour sa résidence.
