Joshua 6
1 Now Jericho was shut up and was barred, because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.
Or Jéricho s'était fermée, et était fermée aux enfants d'Israël: personne n'entrait ni ne sortait.
2 And Jehovah said to Joshua, See, I have given into thy hand Jericho, and the king thereof, [and] the valiant men.
Alors l'Éternel dit à Josué: Vois! j'ai livré entre tes mains Jéricho et son Roi, milice guerrière.
3 And ye shall go round the city, all the men of war, encompassing the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.
Vous tous les hommes de guerre, vous exécuterez une marche autour de la ville dont vous ferez une fois le tour, et ainsi pendant six jours.
4 And seven priests shall carry before the ark seven blast-trumpets; and on the seventh day ye shall go round the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.
Et sept Prêtres porteront sept trompettes en avant de l'Arche, et le septième jour vous ferez sept fois le tour de la ville, et les Prêtres sonneront des trompettes.
5 And it shall come to pass when they make a long blast with the blast-horn, that all the people on hearing the sound of the trumpet shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall flat, and the people shall go up, each one straight before him.
Et quand on donnera du cor, et que vous entendrez le son de la trompette, tout le peuple poussera un grand cri, et le mur de la ville croulera sur lui-même, et le peuple l'escaladera, chacun droit devant soi.
6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, Carry the ark of the covenant, and seven priests shall carry seven blast-trumpets before the ark of Jehovah.
Alors Josué, fils de Nun, manda les Prêtres et leur dit: Chargez-vous de l'Arche de l'Alliance et que sept Prêtres portent sept trompettes devant l'Arche de l'Éternel.
7 And he said to the people, Pass on, go round the city, and they that are armed shall pass on before the ark of Jehovah.
Et ils dirent au peuple: Marchez et faites le tour de la ville et que les soldats équipés précèdent l'Arche de l'Éternel.
8 And it came to pass when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests carrying the seven blast-trumpets before Jehovah passed on and blew with the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah went after them.
Et Josué ayant parlé au peuple, sept Prêtres portant sept trompettes devant l'Éternel, se mirent en marche et sonnèrent des trompettes, et l'Arche de l'Alliance de l'Éternel les suivait
9 And the armed men went before the priests who blew with the trumpets, and the rearguard came after the ark; they blew with the trumpets in marching.
et les soldats équipés marchaient en tête des Prêtres sonnant des trompettes, et ceux qui fermaient la marche suivaient l'Arche, les trompettes sonnant toujours.
10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, Shout; then shall ye shout.
Or Josué avait donné au peuple cet ordre: Vous ne crierez pas, et ne ferez pas entendre votre voix, et pas un son ne sortira de votre bouche jusqu'au jour où je vous dirai: Criez! Alors poussez le cri!
11 And the ark of Jehovah went round the city, encompassing [it] once; and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.
L'Arche de l'Éternel tourna autour de la ville dont elle fit une fois le tour; puis on rentra au camp et l'on passa la nuit au camp.
12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests carried the ark of Jehovah.
Et Josué se leva le matin et les Prêtres portaient l'Arche de l'Éternel.
13 And the seven priests carrying the seven blast-trumpets before the ark of Jehovah went on and blew continually with the trumpets; and the armed men went before them, and the rearguard went after the ark of Jehovah; they blew with the trumpets in marching.
Et sept Prêtres portant sept trompettes devant l'Arche de l'Éternel, allaient sonnant toujours des trompettes et les soldats équipés les précédaient, et ceux qui fermaient la marche suivaient l'Arche de l'Éternel, les trompettes sonnant toujours.
14 And on the second day they went round the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did six days.
Ainsi firent-ils le tour de la ville le second jour une seule fois, puis ils revinrent au camp, et de même pendant six jours.
15 And it was so that on the seventh day they rose early, about the morning-dawn, and went round the city after the same manner seven times; only on that day they went round the city seven times.
Mais le septième jour ils se levèrent à l'apparition de l'aurore, et ils firent le tour de la ville en cette manière, sept fois; ce jour-là seul ils firent sept fois le tour de la ville.
16 And it came to pass the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, that Joshua said to the people, Shout; for Jehovah has given you the city.
Et au septième tour, comme les Prêtres sonnaient des trompettes, Josué dit au peuple: Poussez le cri! car l'Éternel vous a livré cette ville.
17 And the city shall be accursed, it and all that is in it, to Jehovah; only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
Et cette ville va être dévouée à l'Éternel, elle et tout ce qui y est: la vie ne sera laissée qu'à Rahab, la courtisane, qu'à elle et à tous ceux qui sont chez elle dans la maison, parce qu'elle a caché les émissaires que nous avions envoyés.
18 But in any wise keep from the accursed thing, lest ye make [yourselves] accursed in taking of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.
Seulement abstenez-vous de ce qui sera dévoué, afin qu'après avoir dévoué vous ne preniez rien de ce qui sera dévoué, et que vous n'attiriez pas l'anathème sur le camp d'Israël, et n'ameniez pas sa ruine.
19 And all the silver, and gold, and vessels of copper and iron, shall be holy to Jehovah; they shall come into the treasury of Jehovah.
Et la totalité de l'argent et de l'or et des ustensiles d'airain et de fer sera consacrée à l'Éternel, entrera dans le trésor de l'Éternel.
20 And the people shouted, and they blew with the trumpets. And it came to pass when the people heard the sound of the trumpets, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat; and the people went up into the city, each one straight before him, and they took the city.
Alors le peuple poussa le cri et les trompettes sonnaient. Et le peuple entendant le son de la trompette poussa un grand cri, et la muraille croula sur elle-même, et le peuple escalada la ville, chacun droit devant soi; et ils prirent la ville.
21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city; both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.
Et ils dévouèrent tout ce qui était dans la ville, hommes et femmes, jeunes gens et vieillards, bœufs, brebis et ânes, par le tranchant de l'épée.
22 And Joshua said to the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house and bring out thence the woman, and all that she has, as ye swore unto her.
Et Josué dit aux deux hommes qui étaient allés reconnaître le pays: Rendez-vous à la maison de cette femme, la courtisane, et faites en sortir la femme et tous ceux qui lui appartiennent, comme vous lui en avez fait le serment.
23 And the young men, the spies, went in and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had: all her kindred did they bring out, and they left them outside the camp of Israel.
Et les jeunes hommes, les éclaireurs, entrèrent et firent sortir Rahab et son père et sa mère et ses frères et tous ceux qui lui appartenaient; ils firent donc sortir toute sa famille, mais ils les laissèrent en dehors du camp d'Israël.
24 And they burned the city with fire, and all that was therein; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of copper and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of Jehovah.
Quant à la ville, ils la brûlèrent avec tout ce qu'elle contenait; seulement ils mirent dans le trésor de la maison de l'Éternel l'argent et l'or et les ustensiles d'airain et de fer.
25 And Joshua saved alive Rahab the harlot, and her father's household, and all that she had, and she dwelt in the midst of Israel to this day; because she hid the messengers whom Joshua had sent to spy out Jericho.
Et Josué laissa la vie à Rahab, la courtisane, et à la maison de son père et à tous ceux qui lui appartenaient; et elle a habité au sein d'Israël jusqu'aujourd'hui, parce qu'elle avait caché les émissaires envoyés par Josué pour reconnaître Jéricho.
26 And Joshua swore at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before Jehovah who shall rise up and build this city Jericho! In his first-born shall he lay its foundation, and in his youngest son shall he set up its gates.
Et dans ce même temps Josué fit un serment en ces termes: Maudit soit devant l'Éternel celui qui entreprendra de relever cette ville de Jéricho! Qu'au prix de son premier-né il en pose les fondements, et qu'au prix de son plus jeune fils il en replace les portes!
27 And Jehovah was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.
Et l'Éternel était avec Josué dont la renommée se répandait dans tout le pays.
