Jonah 1
1 And the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
அமித்தாயின் மகனாகிய யோனாவுக்கு யெகோவாவின் வார்த்தை வந்தது.
2 Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
“நீ பெரிய பட்டணமான நினிவேக்குப் போய், அதற்கு எதிராகப் பிரசங்கம்பண்ணு. ஏனெனில், அதன் கொடுமை எனக்கு முன்பாக வந்திருக்கிறது.”
3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish, from the presence of Jehovah.
ஆனால் யோனாவோ, யெகோவாவைவிட்டு ஓடி மறுதிசையிலிருக்கும் தர்ஷீசுக்குப் போகப் புறப்பட்டான். அவன் யோப்பாவுக்குப் போய் அங்கே தர்ஷீஸ் துறைமுகத்துக்குப் போகும் ஒரு கப்பலைக் கண்டான். அவன் பயணத்துக்கான கட்டணத்தைச் செலுத்தி, கப்பலேறி, யெகோவாவிடமிருந்து தப்பிக்கொள்வதற்காக தர்ஷீசுக்குப் பயணமானான்.
4 But Jehovah sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest upon the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
அப்பொழுது யெகோவா கடலில் பெருங்காற்றை அனுப்பினார். கப்பல் உடைந்துபோகுமென பயப்படத்தக்கதான, ஒரு பெரும்புயல் கடலில் உண்டாயிற்று.
5 And the mariners were afraid, and cried every one unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to be lightened of them. But Jonah had gone down into the lower part of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
கப்பலாட்கள் எல்லோரும் பயந்து, ஒவ்வொருவனும் தன்தன் தெய்வத்தை நோக்கிக் கதறினான். அத்துடன் அவர்கள் கப்பலின் பாரத்தைக் குறைப்பதற்காக, அதிலிருந்த சரக்குகள் எல்லாவற்றையும் கடலில் எறிந்தார்கள். ஆனால் யோனாவோ, கப்பலின் அடித்தளத்திற்குச் சென்று அங்கே படுத்து ஆழ்ந்த நித்திரையாயிருந்தான்.
6 And the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, sleeper? arise, call upon thy God; perhaps God will think upon us, that we perish not.
அப்பொழுது மாலுமி அவனிடம் சென்று, “நீ எப்படி நித்திரை செய்யலாம்? எழுந்து நீயும் உன் தெய்வத்திடம் மன்றாடு; ஒருவேளை அவர் நம்மில் கவனம்கொண்டு, அழிவிலிருந்து நம்மைக் காப்பாற்றக்கூடும் என்றான்.”
7 And they said each one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
அப்பொழுது கப்பலாட்கள் ஒருவரையொருவர் நோக்கி, “வாருங்கள், இந்த பேராபத்திற்குக் காரணம் யார் என்று அறியச் சீட்டுப் போடுவோம் என்றார்கள்.” அவர்கள் சீட்டுப் போட்டபொழுது, அது யோனாவின் பெயருக்கு விழுந்தது.
8 And they said unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us: what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
எனவே அவர்கள் அவனிடம், “இந்தக் கஷ்டங்களுக்கெல்லாம் காரணம் யார்? என்று இப்பொழுது நீ எங்களுக்குச் சொல்லவேண்டும். நீ என்ன வேலைசெய்கிறாய்? நீ எங்கேயிருந்து வருகிறாய்? உனது நாடு எது? நீ எந்த நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்தவன்?” எனக் கேட்டார்கள்.
9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear Jehovah, the God of the heavens, who hath made the sea and the dry [land].
அதற்கு அவன் அவர்களிடம், “நான் ஒரு எபிரெயன், கடலையும் நிலத்தையும் படைத்த பரலோகத்தின் இறைவனாகிய யெகோவாவை ஆராதிக்கிறவன்” எனப் பதிலளித்தான்.
10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this thou hast done? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of Jehovah: for he had told them.
அவன் தான் யெகோவாவைவிட்டு ஓடிப்போகிறவன் என்று ஏற்கெனவே அவர்களிடம் சொல்லியிருந்தான். எனவே அவர்கள் அதைப்பற்றி அறிந்ததால் மிகவும் பயந்து, நீ என்ன செய்துவிட்டாய்? என்று கேட்டார்கள்.
11 And they said unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.
கடல் மென்மேலும் கொந்தளித்தது. எனவே அவர்கள், “கடலின் கொந்தளிப்பை அமைதிப்படுத்த, நாங்கள் உனக்கு என்ன செய்யவேண்டும்?” என அவனைக் கேட்டார்கள்.
12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that because of me this great tempest is upon you.
“என்னைத் தூக்கிக் கடலுக்குள் எறிந்துவிடுங்கள்; அப்பொழுது அது அமைதலாகும். என் குற்றத்தினாலேயே உங்கள்மேல் இப்பெரும் புயல் வந்திருக்கிறது என நான் அறிவேன்” என அவன் விடையளித்தான்.
13 But the men rowed hard to regain the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.
ஆனாலும் அந்த மனிதர், கப்பலை தண்டுவலித்து கரைக்குக் கொண்டுபோகும்படி, தங்களால் இயன்றவரை முயற்சித்தனர். ஆனால் அது அவர்களால் முடியவில்லை. கடலோ முன்பு இருந்ததைவிட, மிக அதிகமாக கொந்தளித்துக் கொண்டேயிருந்தது.
14 And they cried unto Jehovah and said, Ah, Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee.
அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் யெகோவாவிடம் வேண்டுதல்செய்து, “யெகோவாவே, இந்த மனிதனின் உயிரை எடுத்ததற்காக எங்களைச் சாகவிடாதேயும். குற்றமற்ற ஒரு மனிதனைக் கொன்றதற்கான பழியை எங்கள்மீது சுமத்தாதேயும். ஏனெனில், நீர் எப்பொழுதும் உமது விருப்பத்தின்படியே செய்திருக்கிறீர்” என அழுதார்கள்.
15 And they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging.
அதன்பின் அவர்கள் யோனாவைத் தூக்கிக் கப்பலைவிட்டு கடலுக்குள் எறிந்தார்கள். அப்பொழுது கொந்தளித்த கடல் அமைதியானது.
16 And the men feared Jehovah exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto Jehovah, and made vows.
இதைக் கண்ட அம்மனிதர்கள் யெகோவாவுக்கு மிகவும் பயந்து, அவருக்கு பலியைச் செலுத்தினார்கள்; அவருக்கு நேர்த்திக்கடன்களையும் செய்தார்கள்.
17 And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
ஆனால் யெகோவாவோ, யோனாவை விழுங்கும்படி, ஒரு பெரிய மீனை ஆயத்தப்படுத்தியிருந்தார்; யோனா அந்த மீனின் வயிற்றில் மூன்றுநாள் இரவும் பகலும் இருந்தான்.
