< John 2 >
1 And on the third day a marriage took place in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
Two days after this there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and Jesus’ mother was there.
2 And Jesus also, and his disciples, were invited to the marriage.
Jesus himself, too, with his disciples, was invited to the wedding.
3 And wine being deficient, the mother of Jesus says to him, They have no wine.
And, when the wine ran short, his mother said to him: “They have no wine left.”
4 Jesus says to her, What have I to do with thee, woman? mine hour has not yet come.
“What do you want with me?” answered Jesus. “My time has not come yet.”
5 His mother says to the servants, Whatever he may say to you, do.
His mother said to the servants: “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Now there were standing there six stone water-vessels, according to the purification of the Jews, holding two or three measures each.
There were standing there six stone water-jars, in accordance with the Jewish rule of ‘purification,’ each holding twenty or thirty gallons.
7 Jesus says to them, Fill the water-vessels with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
Jesus said to the servants: “Fill the water-jars with water.”
8 And he says to them, Draw out now, and carry [it] to the feast-master. And they carried [it].
And, when they had filled them to the brim, he added: “Now take some out, and carry it to the Master of the Feast.” The servants did so.
9 But when the feast-master had tasted the water which had been made wine (and knew not whence it was, but the servants knew who drew the water), the feast-master calls the bridegroom,
And, when the Master of the Feast had tasted the water which had now become wine, not knowing where it had come from — although the servants who had taken out the water knew —
10 and says to him, Every man sets on first the good wine, and when [men] have well drunk, then the inferior; thou hast kept the good wine till now.
He called the bridegroom and said to him: “Every one puts good wine on the table first, and inferior wine afterwards, when his guests have drunk freely; but you have kept back the good wine till now!”
11 This beginning of signs did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
This, the first sign of his mission, Jesus gave at Cana in Galilee, and by it revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he descended to Capernaum, he and his mother and his brethren and his disciples; and there they abode not many days.
After this, Jesus went down to Capernaum — he, his mother, his brothers, and his disciples; but they stayed there only a few days.
13 And the passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Then, as the Jewish Passover was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14 And he found in the temple the sellers of oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers sitting;
In the Temple Courts he found people who were selling bullocks, sheep, and pigeons, and the money-changers at their counters.
15 and, having made a scourge of cords, he cast [them] all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the change of the money-changers, and overturned the tables,
So he made a whip of cords, and drove them all out of the Temple Courts, and the sheep and bullocks as well; he scattered the money of the money-changers, and overturned their tables,
16 and said to the sellers of doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house a house of merchandise.
and said to the pigeon-dealers: “Take these things away. Do not turn my Father’s House into a market-house.”
17 [And] his disciples remembered that it is written, The zeal of thy house devours me.
His disciples remembered that Scripture said — ‘Zeal for thy House will consume me.’
18 The Jews therefore answered and said to him, What sign shewest thou to us, that thou doest these things?
Upon this the Jews asked Jesus: “What sign are you going to show us, since you act in this way?”
19 Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
“Destroy this temple,” was his answer, “and I will raise it in three days.”
20 The Jews therefore said, Forty and six years was this temple building, and thou wilt raise it up in three days?
“This Temple,” replied the Jews, “has been forty-six years in building, and are you going to ‘raise it in three days’?”
21 But he spoke of the temple of his body.
But Jesus was speaking of his body as a temple.
22 When therefore he was raised from among [the] dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
Afterwards, when he had risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the passage of Scripture, and the words which Jesus had spoken.
23 And when he was in Jerusalem, at the passover, at the feast, many believed on his name, beholding his signs which he wrought.
While Jesus was in Jerusalem, during the Passover Festival, many came to trust in him, when they saw the signs of his mission that he was giving.
24 But Jesus himself did not trust himself to them, because he knew all [men],
But Jesus did not trust himself to them, since he could read every heart,
25 and that he had not need that any should testify of man, for himself knew what was in man.
and because he did not need that others should tell him what men were; for he could of himself read what was in men.
