Job 5
1 Call, I pray thee! Is there any that answereth thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?
Appelle donc! Est-il quelqu’un qui te répondra? Vers lequel des Saints te tourneras-tu?
2 For vexation killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the simple.
Certes, c’est sa mauvaise humeur qui tue l’insensé, c’est son dépit qui fait mourir le sot.
3 I myself saw the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
J’Ai vu, moi, l’insensé prendre racine, mais aussitôt j’ai maudit sa demeure:
4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer:
"Que ses fils soient éloignés de tout secours, qu’ils soient écrasés à la Porte, sans personne pour les sauver!
5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh even out of the thorns; and the snare gapeth for his substance.
Que l’affamé dévore sa récolte en l’enlevant jusque derrière les haies d’épines, que le besogneux happe ses richesses!"
6 For evil cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
Car ce n’est pas du sol que sort le malheur, ce n’est pas de la terre que germe la douleur.
7 For man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upwards.
Mais l’homme est né pour la douleur, tout comme les étincelles enflammées s’élèvent haut dans l’air.
8 But as for me I will seek unto God, and unto God commit my cause;
Toutefois, moi, je m’adresserais au Tout-Puissant, j’exposerais ma cause à Dieu.
9 Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number;
Il accomplit de grandes choses en nombre infini, des merveilles qui ne peuvent se compter.
10 Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields;
II répand la pluie à la surface de la terre et lance des cours d’eaux dans les plaines.
11 Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity.
Il met sur les hauteurs ceux qui étaient abaissés, et ceux qui étaient dans une noire tristesse se relèvent par son secours.
12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise.
Il fait échouer les projets des gens de ruse: leurs mains n’exécutent rien qui vaille.
13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong:
Il prend les malins dans leurs propres artifices et ruine les plans des fourbes.
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.
Le jour, ils se heurtent aux ténèbres; en plein midi, ils tâtonnent comme dans la nuit.
15 And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
II protège contre leur bouche qui est un glaive, sauve le faible des mains du fort.
16 So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.
L’Espoir renaît pour le pauvre, et l’iniquité a la bouche close.
17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.
Ah! Certes, heureux l’homme que Dieu réprimande! Ne repousse donc pas les leçons du Tout-Puissant.
18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.
Car il blesse et panse la blessure, il frappe et ses mains guérissent.
19 He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
Qu’il survienne six calamités, il t’en préservera, et lors de la septième, le mal ne te touchera pas.
20 In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.
En temps de famine, il te sauvera de la mort; dans le combat des atteintes du glaive.
21 Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
Tu seras à l’abri du fouet de la langue, et si une catastrophe éclate, tu n’auras rien à craindre.
22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, and of the beasts of the earth thou shalt not be afraid.
Tu te riras de la dévastation et de la disette; les animaux de la terre, tu ne les redouteras point.
23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
Car même avec les pierres du sol tu auras un pacte, et les animaux sauvages concluront un traité de paix avec toi.
24 And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou wilt survey thy fold, and miss nothing.
Tu verras le bonheur fixé dans ta demeure, tu inspecteras ta maison et ne trouveras rien en défaut.
25 And thou shalt know that thy seed is numerous, and thine offspring as the herb of the earth.
Tu verras s’accroître le nombre de tes enfants, et tes rejetons se multiplier comme l’herbe de la terre.
26 Thou shalt come to the grave in a ripe age, as a shock of corn is brought in in its season.
Tu entreras dans la tombe au terme extrême de la vieillesse, comme s’élève une meule de blé dans la saison voulue.
27 Behold this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thyself.
Tel est le fruit de nos réflexions, telle est la vérité: accueille-la et prends-la à cœur.
