Jeremiah 34
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion, and all the peoples, fought against Jerusalem and against all the cities thereof, saying,
La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie par l'Éternel, lorsque Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, et toute son armée, et tous les royaumes des pays de sa domination, et tous les peuples faisaient la guerre à Jérusalem et à toutes ses villes. Il dit:
2 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.
Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Va, et parle à Sédécias, roi de Juda, et lui dis: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, je livre cette ville aux mains du roi de Babel, pour qu'il la brûle par le feu;
3 And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt certainly be taken, and given into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and his mouth shall speak with thy mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.
et toi, tu n'échapperas pas non plus à sa main, mais tu seras pris et livré à sa main, et tes yeux rencontreront les yeux du roi de Babel, et tu lui parleras bouche à bouche, et tu iras à Babel.
4 Only, hear the word of Jehovah, O Zedekiah king of Judah. Thus saith Jehovah as to thee: Thou shalt not die by the sword;
Cependant, écoute la parole de l'Éternel, Sédécias, roi de Juda! Ainsi prononce l'Éternel sur toi: Tu ne mourras point par l'épée,
5 thou shalt die in peace, and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings that were before thee, so shall they burn for thee; and they will lament for thee, Ah, lord! for I have spoken the word, saith Jehovah.
tu mourras en paix, et comme on brûla des parfums pour tes pères, les rois précédents qui furent avant toi, de même on en brûlera pour toi, et l'on élèvera pour toi la complainte: « Hélas! Seigneur! » Car j'ai prononcé cette parole, dit l'Éternel.
6 And the prophet Jeremiah spoke all these words unto Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem.
Et Jérémie, le prophète, dit à Sédécias, roi de Juda, toutes ces paroles à Jérusalem.
7 And the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah; for these were amongst the cities of Judah, the fenced cities that were left.
Or, l'armée du roi de Babel faisait la guerre à Jérusalem et à toutes les villes de Juda qui étaient restées, et à Lachis et à Aséka; car elles étaient restées d'entre les villes de Juda, étant des villes fortes.
8 The word that came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people that were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them:
La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie par l'Éternel, après que le roi Sédécias eut fait une alliance avec tout le peuple de Jérusalem, dans le but de promulguer entre eux un affranchissement,
9 that every man should let his bondman, and every man his bondmaid, the Hebrew and the Hebrewess, go free, that none should exact service of them, [that is, ] of a Jew his brother.
en vertu duquel chacun rendrait la liberté à son serviteur, et chacun à sa servante, homme et femme de la race des Hébreux, et personne ne prendrait pour esclave le Juif, son frère.
10 And all the princes and all the people that had entered into the covenant obeyed, every man letting his bondman and every man his bondmaid go free, that none should exact service of them any more: they obeyed, and let [them] go.
Et tous les princes et tout le peuple qui étaient entrés dans l'alliance, consentirent à affranchir chacun son serviteur, et chacun sa servante, pour ne plus les tenir en esclavage: ils consentirent et les affranchirent.
11 But afterwards they turned, and caused the bondmen and the bondmaids whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for bondmen and for bondmaids.
Mais ils changèrent ensuite, et reprirent les serviteurs et les servantes qu'ils avaient affranchis, et se les assujettirent comme serviteurs et servantes.
12 And the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,
Alors la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie par l'Éternel en ces mots:
13 Thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying,
Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Je fis une alliance avec vos pères, le jour où je les tirai du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude, disant:
14 At the end of seven years ye shall let go every man his brother, a Hebrew, who hath sold himself unto thee; when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee. But your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.
Au terme de sept années vous affranchirez chacun votre frère, l'Hébreu qui se sera vendu à vous; il te servira six années, puis tu lui rendras sa liberté. Mais vos pères ne m'écoutèrent point et ne prêtèrent point l'oreille.
15 And you, ye had this day turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name:
Mais vous, vous êtes revenus en ce jour, et avez fait ce qui est droit à mes yeux, en promulguant chacun la liberté pour son prochain, et vous avez fait une alliance devant moi dans la maison appelée de mon nom;
16 but ye have turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his bondman, and every man his bondmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and ye have brought them into subjection, to be unto you for bondmen and for bondmaids.
mais vous êtes revenus en arrière, et vous avez profané mon nom, en reprenant chacun son serviteur et chacun sa servante à qui vous aviez rendu la liberté, et vous les avez assujettis à être vos serviteurs et vos servantes.
17 Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith Jehovah, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will give you over to be driven hither and thither among all the kingdoms of the earth.
C'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Éternel: Vous ne m'avez point obéi jusqu'à promulguer la liberté chacun pour son frère, et chacun pour son prochain. Voici, je promulgue votre liberté, dit l'Éternel, et vous serez à l'épée, à la peste et à la famine, et je vous abandonne aux avanies de tous les royaumes de la terre.
18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, — the calf which they cut in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
Et j'assimilerai les hommes transgresseurs de mon alliance, qui n'ont pas accompli les articles de l'alliance qu'ils ont conclue devant moi, au taureau qu'ils ont coupé en deux, et entre les quartiers duquel ils ont passé,
19 — the princes of Judah and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, that passed between the parts of the calf;
les princes de Juda, et les princes de Jérusalem, les eunuques et les Sacrificateurs, et tout le peuple du pays, qui ont passé entre les quartiers de la victime.
20 them will I give into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of them that seek their life; and their carcases shall be food for the fowl of the heavens and for the beasts of the earth.
Et je les livrerai aux mains de leurs ennemis, et aux mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, et leurs cadavres seront la pâture des oiseaux des Cieux et des bêtes de la terre.
21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.
Et Sédécias aussi, roi de Juda, et. ses princes, je les livrerai aux mains de leurs ennemis, et aux mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, et aux mains de l'armée du roi de Babel, qui [pour le moment] s'est éloigné de vous.
22 Behold, I command, saith Jehovah, and I will cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.
Voici, j'en donne l'ordre, dit l'Éternel, et je les ramènerai contre cette ville, pour qu'ils l'assiègent et s'en emparent, et la brûlent par le feu, et des villes de Juda je ferai un désert sans habitants.
