Jeremiah 13
1 Thus said Jehovah unto me: Go and buy thee a linen girdle, and put it upon thy loins; but dip it not in water.
Yahvé m'a dit: « Va, achète-toi une ceinture de lin, mets-la à ta taille, et ne la mets pas dans l'eau. »
2 And I bought a girdle according to the word of Jehovah, and put it upon my loins.
Et j'ai acheté une ceinture, selon la parole de Yahvé, et je l'ai mise à ma taille.
3 And the word of Jehovah came unto me the second time, saying,
La parole de Yahvé me fut adressée pour la seconde fois, en ces termes:
4 Take the girdle that thou hast bought, which is upon thy loins, and arise, go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock.
« Prends la ceinture que tu as achetée et qui est à ta taille, lève-toi, va jusqu'à l'Euphrate, et là, cache-la dans une fente du rocher. »
5 So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as Jehovah had commanded me.
Je suis donc allé le cacher près de l'Euphrate, comme Yahvé me l'avait ordonné.
6 And it came to pass at the end of many days, that Jehovah said unto me, Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence which I commanded thee to hide there.
Au bout de plusieurs jours, Yahvé me dit: « Lève-toi, va vers l'Euphrate, et prends là la ceinture que je t'ai ordonné d'y cacher. »
7 And I went to the Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it; and behold, the girdle was spoiled, it was good for nothing.
Puis je suis allé jusqu'à l'Euphrate, j'ai creusé, et j'ai retiré la ceinture du lieu où je l'avais cachée; et voici, la ceinture était en ruine. Elle n'avait servi à rien.
8 And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
Alors la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:
9 Thus saith Jehovah: After this manner will I spoil the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem.
L'Éternel dit: C'est ainsi que je détruirai l'orgueil de Juda et la grande fierté de Jérusalem.
10 This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and go after other gods, to serve them and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle which is good for nothing.
Ce peuple méchant, qui refuse d'entendre mes paroles, qui marche dans l'obstination de son cœur, et qui est allé après d'autres dieux pour les servir et se prosterner devant eux, sera comme cette ceinture, qui ne sert à rien.
11 For as a girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith Jehovah; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.
Car, comme la ceinture s'attache à la taille d'un homme, ainsi j'ai fait s'attacher à moi toute la maison d'Israël et toute la maison de Juda, dit Yahvé, pour qu'elles soient pour moi un peuple, un nom, une louange et une gloire, mais elles n'ont pas voulu écouter.
12 And thou shalt speak unto them this word: Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Every skin shall be filled with wine. And they will say unto thee, Do we not very well know that every skin shall be filled with wine?
C'est pourquoi tu leur diras cette parole: « L'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, dit: Tout récipient doit être rempli de vin ». Ils te diront: « Ne savons-nous pas que tout récipient doit être rempli de vin? »
13 And thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, and the kings that sit for David upon his throne, and the priests and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.
Alors dis-leur: « L'Éternel dit: Voici que je vais remplir d'ivresse tous les habitants de ce pays, les rois assis sur le trône de David, les prêtres, les prophètes, et tous les habitants de Jérusalem.
14 And I will dash them one against another, both the fathers and the sons together, saith Jehovah; I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy so as not to destroy them.
Je les écraserai les uns contre les autres, les pères et les fils ensemble, dit l'Éternel: « Je n'aurai ni pitié, ni épargne, ni compassion, pour ne pas les détruire. »'"
15 Hear ye, and give ear, be not lifted up; for Jehovah hath spoken.
Écoutez, et prêtez l'oreille. Ne sois pas fier, car Yahvé a parlé.
16 Give glory to Jehovah your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the mountains of twilight; and ye shall look for light, but he will turn it into the shadow of death, and make [it] gross darkness.
Rendez gloire à Yahvé votre Dieu, avant qu'il ne provoque l'obscurité, et avant que vos pieds ne trébuchent sur les montagnes sombres, et pendant que vous cherchez la lumière, il la transforme en ombre de la mort, et en fait une obscurité profonde.
17 And if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for [your] pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because Jehovah's flock is gone into captivity.
Mais si vous ne voulez pas l'entendre, mon âme pleurera en secret votre orgueil. Mon œil pleurera amèrement, et ruisselant de larmes, car le troupeau de Yahvé a été emmené en captivité.
18 Say unto the king and to the queen: Humble yourselves, sit down low; for from your heads shall come down the crown of your magnificence.
Dis au roi et à la reine mère, « Humiliez-vous. Asseyez-vous, car vos couronnes sont tombées, même la couronne de ta gloire.
19 The cities of the south are shut up, and there is none to open [them]; all Judah is carried away captive: it is wholly carried away captive.
Les villes du Sud sont fermées, et il n'y a personne pour les ouvrir. Juda est emmené en captivité: tous. Ils sont entièrement emportés captifs.
20 Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north. Where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock?
Lève les yeux, et voir ceux qui viennent du nord. Où est le troupeau qui vous a été donné, votre beau troupeau?
21 What wilt thou say when he shall visit thee, since thou thyself hast trained them to be princes in chief over thee? Shall not sorrows take thee, as a woman in travail?
Que direz-vous lorsqu'il établira à votre tête ceux que vous avez vous-même appris à être vos amis? Les douleurs ne vous saisiront-elles pas, comme une femme en travail?
22 And if thou say in thy heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts uncovered, [and] thy heels have suffered violence.
Si tu dis dans ton cœur, « Pourquoi ces choses sont-elles venues sur moi? » Vos jupes sont découvertes à cause de la grandeur de votre iniquité, et vos talons subissent des violences.
23 Can an Ethiopian change his skin, or a leopard his spots? [Then] may ye also do good, who are accustomed to do evil.
L'Éthiopien peut-il changer de peau, ou le léopard ses taches? Alors puissiez-vous aussi faire le bien, qui ont l'habitude de faire le mal.
24 And I will scatter them as stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness.
« C'est pourquoi je les disperserai comme le chaume qui passe par le vent du désert.
25 This shall be thy lot, thy measured portion from me, saith Jehovah; because thou hast forgotten me, and confided in falsehood.
C'est votre lot, la part que je vous ai mesurée, dit Yahvé, « parce que tu m'as oublié, et se sont confiés au mensonge. »
26 Therefore will I also turn thy skirts over thy face, and thy shame shall be seen.
C'est pourquoi je découvrirai aussi tes jupes sur ton visage, et votre honte apparaîtra.
27 Thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy fornication, on the hills, in the fields, — thine abominations, have I seen. Woe unto thee, Jerusalem! Wilt thou not be made clean? after how long a time yet?
J'ai vu vos abominations et vos adultères. et ton hennissement, la débauche de ta prostitution, sur les collines dans le champ. Malheur à toi, Jérusalem! Vous ne serez pas purifié. Combien de temps cela va-t-il encore durer? »
