James 4
1 Whence [come] wars and whence fightings among you? [Is it] not thence, — from your pleasures, which war in your members?
Woher sind unter euch Kämpfe und Streitigkeiten? nicht daher, daß eure Lüste streiten in euren Gliedern?
2 Ye lust and have not: ye kill and are full of envy, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war; ye have not because ye ask not.
Ihr begehrt und besitzt nicht; ihr mordet und neidet, und könnt es nicht erlangen. Ihr streitet und kämpfet, und habt es nicht, weil ihr nicht betet.
3 Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask evilly, that ye may consume [it] in your pleasures.
Ihr betet und bekommt es nicht, weil ihr sträflich betet, um in euren Lüsten zu verzehren.
4 Adulteresses, know ye not that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore is minded to be [the] friend of the world is constituted enemy of God.
Ihr Ehebrecherische, wisset ihr nicht, daß die Freundschaft mit der Welt Feindschaft gegen Gott ist? Wer also der Welt Freund sein will, macht sich zu Gottes Feind.
5 Think ye that the scripture speaks in vain? Does the Spirit which has taken his abode in us desire enviously?
Oder meint ihr, die Schrift spreche für nichts - eifersüchtig ist die Zuneigung des Geistes, den er in uns hat Wohnung machen lassen,
6 But he gives more grace. Wherefore he says, God sets himself against [the] proud, but gives grace to [the] lowly.
um so größere Gnade aber gibt er - darum spricht sie: Gott widersteht den Hoffärtigen, den Demütigen aber gibt er Gnade.
7 Subject yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
So unterwerfet euch denn Gott. Widerstehet dem Teufel, so fliehet er von euch. Nahet euch zu Gott, so naht er sich zu euch.
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse [your] hands, sinners, and purify [your] hearts, ye double-minded.
Machet rein die Hände, ihr Sünder, und keusch die Herzen, ihr Unlautere.
9 Be wretched, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and [your] joy to heaviness.
Fühlet euer Elend und trauert mit Thränen. Euer Lachen verkehre sich in Leid und eure Freude in Betrübnis.
10 Humble yourselves before [the] Lord, and he shall exalt you.
Demütiget euch vor dem Herrn so wird er euch erhöhen.
11 Speak not against one another, brethren. He that speaks against [his] brother, or judges his brother, speaks against [the] law and judges [the] law. But if thou judgest [the] law, thou art not doer of [the] law, but judge.
Lästert einander nicht, Brüder. Wer einen Bruder lästert oder seinen Bruder richtet, der lästert das Gesetz und richtet das Gesetz; wenn du aber das Gesetz richtest, so bist du nicht Thäter sondern Richter des Gesetzes.
12 One is the lawgiver and judge, who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou who judgest thy neighbour?
Einer ist, der Gesetzgeber und Richter ist, der da kann retten und verderben. Du aber, wer bist du, der du den Nächsten richtest?
13 Go to now, ye who say, To-day or to-morrow will we go into such a city and spend a year there, and traffic and make gain,
Wohlan nun, die ihr da saget: heute oder morgen wollen wir in diese Stadt gehen, da ein Jahr verbringen, Geschäfte treiben, und Gewinn machen,
14 ye who do not know what will be on the morrow, ([for] what [is] your life? It is even a vapour, appearing for a little while, and then disappearing, )
die ihr doch nicht wisset, was es morgen mit eurem Leben sein wird. Dunst seid ihr, der nach kurzem Schein nicht mehr erscheint.
15 instead of your saying, If the Lord should [so] will and we should live, we will also do this or that.
Statt daß ihr saget: wenn der Herr will, werden wir leben, und dies oder das thun.
16 But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil.
Nun aber überhebt ihr euch mit euren Prahlereien, all solches Ueberheben ist vom Uebel.
17 To him therefore who knows how to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.
Wer nun weiß recht zu thun, und thut's nicht, dem ist es Sünde.
