James 3
1 Be not many teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment.
Älkäät, rakkaat veljeni, jokainen pyytäkö opettajana olla, tietäen, että me sitä suuremman tuomion saamme.
2 For we all often offend. If any one offend not in word, he [is] a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body too.
Sillä moninaisissa me kukin puutumme. Mutta joka ei puheessa lankee, se on täydellinen mies, joka voi myös koko ruumiinsa suistaa.
3 Behold, we put the bits in the mouths of the horses, that they may obey us, and we turn round their whole bodies.
Katso, me panemme hevosten suuhun suitset, että he meitä kuulisivat, ja heidän koko ruumiinsa me käännämme ympäri.
4 Behold also the ships, which are so great, and driven by violent winds, are turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pleasure of the helmsman will.
Katso, laivat myös, ehkä kuinka suuret he ovat ja jaloilta tuulilta ajetaan, kuitenkin he käännetään ympäri vähällä perälaudalla, kuhunka se tahtoo, joka sitä hallitsee.
5 Thus also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. See how little a fire, how large a wood it kindles!
Niin myös kieli on piskuinen jäsen, ja kuitenkin suuria asioita toimittaa. Katso, vähä tuli, kuinka suuren metsän se sytyttää,
6 and the tongue [is] fire, the world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set in our members, the defiler of the whole body, and which sets fire to the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell. (Geenna g1067)
Ja kieli on myös tuli, maailma vääryyttä täynnänsä; niin on myös kieli meidän jäsentemme seassa, joka koko ruumiin saastuttaa, ja sytyttää kaiken meidän menomme, koska se helvetistä syttyy. (Geenna g1067)
7 For every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and of sea animals, is tamed and has been tamed by the human species;
Sillä kaikki luonto, sekä petoin että lintuin ja kärmetten ja merellisten, tehdään lakiaksi, ja on lakiaksi tehty inhimilliseltä luonnolta.
8 but the tongue can no one among men tame; [it is] an unsettled evil, full of death-bringing poison.
Mutta kieltä ei taida yksikään ihminen asettaa, sitä levotointa pahuutta, kuolettavaista myrkkyä täynnänsä.
9 Therewith bless we the Lord and Father, and therewith curse we men made after [the] likeness of God.
Sen kautta me kiitämme Jumalaa ja Isää, ja sen kautta me myös kiroilemme ihmisiä, jotka Jumalan kuvan jälkeen luodut ovat.
10 Out of the same mouth goes forth blessing and cursing. It is not right, my brethren, that these things should be thus.
Yhdestä suusta kiitos ja kirous käy ulos. Ei se niin, rakkaat veljeni, oleman pidä.
11 Does the fountain, out of the same opening, pour forth sweet and bitter?
Kuohuuko joku lähde yhdestä huovosta makiaa ja karvasta vettä?
12 Can, my brethren, a fig produce olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt [water] make sweet water.
Taitaako, rakkaat veljeni, fikunapuu kantaa öljyä, taikka viinapuu fikunia? Niin ei taida myös yksikään lähde suolaista ja makiaa vettä vuotaa.
13 Who [is] wise and understanding among you; let him shew out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom;
Kuka viisas ja taitava on teidän seassanne, se osoittakaan hyvällä menollansa työnsä viisauden siveydessä.
14 but if ye have bitter emulation and strife in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.
Mutta jos teillä on katkera kiivaus ja riita sydämessänne, niin älkäät kerskatko ja älkäät valehdelko totuutta vastaan;
15 This is not the wisdom which comes down from above, but earthly, natural, devilish.
Sillä ei se ole viisaus, joka ylhäältä tullut on, vaan maallinen, inhimillinen ja perkeleellinen.
16 For where emulation and strife [are], there [is] disorder and every evil thing.
Sillä kussa kiivaus ja riita on, siellä on myös sekaseuraisuus ja kaikki paha meno.
17 But the wisdom from above first is pure, then peaceful, gentle, yielding, full of mercy and good fruits, unquestioning, unfeigned.
Mutta se viisaus, joka ylhäältä on, se on ensisti tosin puhdas, sitte rauhallinen, siviä, uskova, täynnä laupiutta ja hyviä hedelmiä, eriseuratoin ja ulkokullatoin.
18 But [the] fruit of righteousness in peace is sown for them that make peace.
Mutta vanhurskauden hedelmä rauhassa kylvetään niille, jotka rauhan pitävät.
