Isaiah 48

1 Hear ye this, house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, who swear by the name of Jehovah, and make mention of the God of Israel, not in truth, nor in righteousness.

Ecoutez ceci, maison de Jacob, vous qui êtes appelés du nom d’Israël, et êtes sortis des eaux de Juda, qui jurez au nom du Seigneur, qui vous souvenez du Dieu d’Israël, mais non dans la vérité et la justice.

2 For they are named after the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel: Jehovah of hosts is his name.

Car ils ont été appelés du nom de la cité sainte, et sur le Dieu d’Israël ils se sont appuyés; le Seigneur des armées est son nom.

3 I have declared the former things long ago; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I caused them to be heard: I wrought suddenly, and they came to pass.

J’ai annoncé dès lors les événements passés; c’est de ma bouche qu’ils sont sortis et je les ai fait entendre; je les ai accomplis tout d’un coup, et ils sont arrivés.

4 Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass,

Car je savais que tu es dur, que ton cou est une chaîne de fer, et ton front d’airain.

5 so I have long ago declared [them] to thee; before they came to pass I caused thee to hear [them]; lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, or my molten image hath commanded them.

Je t’ai prédit dès lors ces choses; avant qu’elles vinssent je te les ai indiquées, de peur que tu ne dises: Ce sont mes idoles qui les ont faites, et mes images taillées au ciseau et jetées en fonte qui les ont ordonnées.

6 Thou heardest, see all this; — and ye, will not ye declare [it]? I have caused thee to hear new things from this time, and things hidden, and that thou knewest not:

Les choses que tu as entendues, vois-les toutes; mais vous, est-ce que vous les avez annoncées? Je t’en ai fait entendre dès lors de nouvelles; et il en est de réservées que tu ne connais pas;

7 they are created now, and not long ago; and before this day thou hast not heard them, lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.

C’est maintenant qu’elles ont été créées, et non pas alors; avant un jour seulement, et tu ne les as pas entendues, de peur que tu ne dises: Voici que moi je les connaissais.

8 Yea, thou heardest not, yea, thou knewest not, yea, from of old thine ear was not opened; for I knew that thou wouldest ever deal treacherously, and thou wast called a transgressor from the womb.

Tu n’as entendu, ni connu, ton oreille même alors n’était pas ouverte; car je sais que prévariquant, tu prévariqueras, et je t’ai appelé transgresseur dès le sein de ta mère.

9 For my name's sake I will defer mine anger, and [for] my praise will I refrain as to thee, that I cut thee not off.

À cause de mon nom, j’éloignerai ma fureur, et pour ma gloire je te mettrai un frein, pour que tu ne périsses pas,

10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

Je t’ai purifié par le feu, mais non comme l’argent: j’ai choisi pour toi le fourneau de la pauvreté.

11 For mine own sake, for mine own sake, will I do [it]; for how should [my name] be profaned? and I will not give my glory unto another.

C’est à cause de moi, à cause de moi que je ferai que mon nom ne soit pas blasphémé, et je ne donnerai pas ma gloire à un autre.

12 Hearken unto me, Jacob, and [thou] Israel, my called. I [am] HE; I, the first, and I, the last.

Ecoute-moi, Jacob, et toi, Israël, que j’appelle; moi qui suis, moi le premier, et moi le dernier.

13 Yea, my hand hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spread abroad the heavens: I call unto them, they stand up together.

Ma main aussi a fondé la terre, et ma droite a étendu les cieux; moi, je les appellerai, et ils seront là tous ensemble.

14 All ye, gather yourselves together, and hear: which among them hath declared these things? He whom Jehovah hath loved shall execute his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm [shall be on] the Chaldeans.

Rassemblez-vous tous et écoutez-moi: qui d’entre eux a annoncé ces choses? Le Seigneur l’a aimé, il fera sa volonté dans Babylone; et il sera son bras parmi les Chaldéens.

15 I, [even] I, have spoken; yea, I have called him; I have brought him, and his way shall be prosperous.

C’est moi, c’est moi qui ai parlé, et je l’ai appelé; je l’ai amené, et sa voie est aplanie.

16 Come near unto me, hear ye this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I; and now the Lord Jehovah hath sent me, and his Spirit.

Approchez-vous de moi, et écoutez ceci: dès le principe je n’ai pas parlé en secret; dans le temps même, avant l’événement, j’étais là; et maintenant le Seigneur et son esprit m’ont envoyé.

17 Thus saith Jehovah, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I [am] Jehovah thy God, who teacheth thee for [thy] profit, who leadeth thee in the way that thou shouldest go.

Voici ce que dit le Seigneur ton rédempteur, le saint d’Israël: Moi le Seigneur ton Dieu, je t’enseigne des choses utiles, je te dirige dans la voie par laquelle tu marches.

18 Oh that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! Then would thy peace have been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea;

Oh! si tu avais été attentif à mes commandements, ta paix aurait été comme un fleuve, et ta justice comme les flots de la mer;

19 and thy seed would have been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof: their name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me.

Ta postérité eût été comme le sable de ses rivages, et les rejetons de ton sein comme les petites pierres de ses bords; le nom de la race n’aurait pas péri, et il n’eût pas été effacé de devant ma face.

20 Go ye forth from Babylon, flee from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing; declare, cause this to be heard, utter it to the end of the earth; say ye, Jehovah hath redeemed his servant Jacob.

Sortez de Babylone, fuyez de chez les Chaldéens, avec la voix de l’exultation annoncez cette nouvelle, faites-la entendre et portez-la jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre. Dites: Le Seigneur a racheté son serviteur Jacob.

21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts; he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them; yea, he clave the rock, and the waters gushed out.

Ils n’ont pas eu soif dans le désert, lorsqu’il les ramenait; il fit sortir de l’eau d’une pierre pour eux, et il fendit la pierre et des eaux coulèrent.

22 There is no peace, saith Jehovah, unto the wicked.

Il n’y a point de paix pour les impies, dit le Seigneur.
