Hosea 12

1 Ephraim feedeth on wind, and pursueth after the east wind: all day long he multiplieth lies and desolation; and they make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt.

"Nach Sturm geht Ephraims Verlangen; dem Ostwind jagt es nach. Den ganzen Tag lang häuft es Lüge und Verderben. Bald schließt es einen Bund mit Assur; bald bringt es nachägypten Öl."

2 Jehovah hath also a controversy with Judah, and he will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.

Jedoch mit Juda muß der Herr auch rechten. - Nach seinem Wandel aber straft er Jakob, um ihm nach seinen Werken zu vergelten.

3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and in his strength he wrestled with God.

"Im Mutterschoße schon betrog er seinen Bruder.

4 Yea, he wrestled with the Angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spoke with us,

Er kämpfte gegen einen Engel und obsiegte, nachdem er unter Tränen ihn um Gnade angefleht. Zu Betel hat er wieder ihn gefunden und dort mit ihm geredet."

5 — even Jehovah, the God of hosts, — Jehovah is his memorial.

"Der Herr, Gott der Heerscharen Herr", das ist sein Name.

6 And thou, return unto thy God: keep loving-kindness and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.

Doch kehre um zu deinem Gott! Befleiße dich der Tugend und Gerechtigkeit! Und hoffe stets auf deinen Gott!

7 [He is] a merchant, balances of deceit are in his hand; he loveth to oppress.

"Falschwaage hält der Kanaaniter in der Hand; er liebt Betrügerei."

8 And Ephraim saith, Nevertheless I am become rich, I have found me out substance; in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.

Da sagt nun Ephraim: "Auch ich bin reich geworden; ich habe Schätze mir erworben. An allem, was ich mühevoll errang, ist kein Vergehn zu finden, das da Sünde wäre."

9 But I [that am] Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt will again make thee to dwell in tents, as in the days of the solemn feast.

"Ich, der Herr, ich bin dein Gott vom Land Ägypten her. In Zelten laß ich wiederum dich wohnen wie in den Tagen der Versammlung.

10 And I have spoken to the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and by means of the prophets have I used similitudes.

Ich rede abermals zu den Propheten, laß ein Gesicht aufs andere folgen und lehre auch in Gleichnissen durch die Propheten."

11 If Gilead is iniquity, surely they are but vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.

Gileads Schandbilder sind eitel Eitelkeit; in Gilgal schlachten sie zum Opfer Knaben; Altäre haben sie so viel wie Haufen Steine auf den Furchen ihrer Äcker.

12 And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept [sheep].

"In Syriens Gefilde floh einst Jakob, und um ein Weib ward Israel ein Knecht, und um ein Weib hat er gehütet."

13 And by a prophet Jehovah brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.

Durch einen Seher aber hat der Herr einst Israel aus dem Ägypterland herausgeführt; durch einen Seher ward's gehütet.

14 Ephraim provoked [him] to anger most bitterly; and his Lord shall leave his blood upon him, and recompense unto him his reproach.

Doch hat ihm bittern Kummer Ephraim bereitet; drum wird er seine Blutschuld auf ihm lassen, und ahnden wird der Herr an ihm die zugefügte Schmach.
