Genesis 34
1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
Or, Dina, la fille que Léa avait enfantée à Jacob, sortit pour faire connaissance avec les filles du pays.
2 And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.
Elle fut remarquée de Sichem, fils de Hamor le Hévéen, gouverneur du pays; il l’enleva et s’approcha d’elle en lui faisant violence.
3 And his soul fastened on Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden, and spoke consolingly to the maiden.
Puis son cœur s’attacha à Dina, fille de Jacob; il aima la jeune fille et il parla à son cœur.
4 And Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, Take me this girl as wife.
Sichem dit à Hamor, son père: "Obtiens moi cette jeune fille pour épouse."
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his cattle in the fields, and Jacob said nothing until they came.
Jacob apprit qu’on avait déshonoré Dina, sa fille. Ses fils étaient avec son bétail, dans les champs; Jacob se tut jusqu’à leur retour.
6 And Hamor the father of Shechem came out to Jacob, to speak to him.
Hamor, père de Sichem, se rendit auprès de Jacob pour lui parler.
7 And the sons of Jacob came from the fields when they heard [it]; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had wrought what was disgraceful in Israel, in lying with Jacob's daughter, which thing ought not to be done.
Mais les enfants de Jacob étaient revenus des champs à cette nouvelle et ces hommes étaient consternés et leur indignation était grande; car une flétrissure avait eu lieu en Israël par le viol de la fille de Jacob et ce n’est pas ainsi qu’on devait agir.
8 And Hamor spoke to them, saying, My son Shechem's soul cleaves to your daughter: I pray you, give her to him as wife.
Hamor leur parla en ces termes: "Sichem, mon fils, a le cœur épris de votre fille; donnez-la lui, je vous prie, pour épouse.
9 And make marriages with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you.
Alliez-vous avec nous; donnez-nous vos filles et épousez les nôtres.
10 And dwell with us, and the land shall be before you: dwell and trade in it, and get yourselves possessions in it.
Demeurez avec nous; le pays vous est ouvert: restez y, exploitez le et formez y des établissements."
11 And Shechem said to her father and to her brethren, Let me find favour in your eyes; and what ye shall say to me I will give.
Sichem dit au père de la jeune fille et à ses frères: "Puisse-je trouver faveur auprès de vous! Ce que vous me demanderez, je le donnerai.
12 Impose on me very much as dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say to me; but give me the maiden as wife.
Imposez-moi le douaire et les dons les plus considérables, je donnerai ce que vous me direz; accordez-moi seulement la jeune fille pour épouse."
13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and spoke — because he had defiled Dinah their sister —
Les fils de Jacob usèrent de ruse en répondant à Sichem et à Hamor son père, parce qu’on avait souillé Dina, leur sœur.
14 and said to them, We cannot do this, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that [were] a reproach to us.
Ils leur dirent: "Nous ne saurions agir ainsi, donner notre sœur à un homme incirconcis: ce serait un déshonneur pour nous.
15 But only in this will we consent to you, if ye will be as we, that every male of you be circumcised;
Toutefois, à ce prix nous serons d’accord avec vous: si vous devenez comme nous, en circoncisant tout mâle d’entre vous.
16 then will we give our daughters to you, and take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and be one people.
Alors nous vous donnerons nos filles et nous accepterons les vôtres pour nous; nous habiterons avec vous et nous formerons un seul peuple.
17 But if ye do not hearken to us, to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter and go away.
Que si vous ne nous écoutez pas pour la circoncision, nous prenons notre fille et nous nous retirons."
18 And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.
Leurs paroles plurent à Hamor et à Sichem son fils.
19 And the youth did not delay to do this, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter. And he was honourable above all in the house of his father.
Et le jeune homme n’hésita point à effectuer la chose, épris qu’il était de la fille de Jacob; d’ailleurs, il était considéré entre tous dans la maison de son père.
20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
Hamor alla, avec Sichem son fils, vers la porte de leur ville et ils parlèrent aux habitants de leur ville en ces termes:
21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it. And the land — behold, it is of wide extent before them. We will take their daughters as wives, and give them our daughters.
"Ces hommes sont de bonne foi avec nous; qu’ils résident dans le pays et qu’ils l’exploitent, le pays est assez vaste pour les admettre; nous prendrons leurs filles pour épouses et nous leur accorderons les nôtres.
22 But only in this will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to be one people — if every male among us be circumcised, just as they are circumcised.
Pourtant, à une condition, ces hommes consentent à demeurer avec nous pour former un même peuple: c’est que tout mâle parmi nous soit circoncis comme ils le sont eux mêmes.
23 Their cattle, and their possessions, and every beast of theirs, shall they not be ours? only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.
Leurs troupeaux, leurs possessions, tout leur bétail, n’est il pas vrai, seront à nous. Accédons seulement à leur désir et ils demeureront avec nous."
24 And all that went out at the gate of his city hearkened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised — all that went out at the gate of his city.
Tous ceux qui habitaient l’enceinte de la ville écoutèrent Hamor et Sichem son fils; et tout mâle fut circoncis, parmi les citoyens de la ville.
25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
Or, le troisième jour, comme ils étaient souffrants, deux des fils de Jacob, Siméon et Lévi, frères de Dina, prirent chacun leur épée, marchèrent sur la ville avec assurance et tuèrent tous les mâles;
26 And Hamor and Shechem his son they slew with the edge of the sword; and took Dinah out of Shechem's house; and went out.
et Hamor et Sichem son fils, ils les passèrent au fil de l’épée; ils emmenèrent Dina hors de la maison de Sichem et ils ressortirent.
27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
Les fils de Jacob vinrent dépouiller les cadavres et pillèrent la ville qui avait déshonoré leur sœur:
28 Their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and what [was] in the city, and what [was] in the field they took;
leur menu bétail, leur gros bétail, leurs ânes, ce qu’ils avaient à la ville, ce qu’ils avaient aux champs, ils le ravirent.
29 and all their goods, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and plundered them, and all that was in the houses.
Tous leurs biens, tous leurs enfants et leurs femmes, ils les emmenèrent et les dépouillèrent, avec tout ce qui était dans les maisons.
30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, in that ye make me odious among the inhabitants of the land — among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I am few men in number, and they will gather themselves against me and smite me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
Jacob dit à Siméon et à Lévi: "Vous m’avez rendu malheureux en me mettant en mauvaise odeur chez les habitants du pays, le Cananéen et le Phérézéen; moi, je suis une poignée d’hommes, ils se réuniront contre moi et me frapperont et je serai exterminé avec ma famille."
31 And they said, Should people deal with our sister as with a harlot?
Ils répondirent: "Devait-on traiter notre sœur comme une prostituée?"
