< Galatians 4 >
1 Now I say, As long as the heir is a child, he differs nothing from a bondman, though he be lord of all;
ⲁ̅ϯϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲉⲫⲟⲥⲟⲛ ⳿ⲭⲣⲟⲛⲟⲛ ⳿ⲉⲡⲓ⳿ⲕⲗⲏ ⲣⲟⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲟⲩⲕⲟⲩϫⲓ ⳿ⲛ⳿ⲁⲗⲟⲩ ⲡⲉ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲛ ⳿ϩⲗⲓ ⳿ⲛϣⲓⲃϯ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲟⲩⲃⲱⲕ ⲉϥⲟⲓ ⳿ⲙ⳪ ⳿ⲉⲉⲛⲭⲁⲓ ⲛⲓⲃⲉⲛ.
2 but he is under guardians and stewards until the period fixed by the father.
ⲃ̅ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲁϥⲭⲏ ϧⲁ ϩⲁⲛⲉⲡⲓ⳿ⲧⲣⲟⲡⲟⲥ ⲛⲉⲙ ϩⲁⲛⲟⲓⲕⲟⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ϣⲁ ϯⲛⲉⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲉϥⲓⲱⲧ.
3 So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the principles of the world;
ⲅ̅ⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲛ ϩⲱⲛ ϩⲟⲧⲉ ⲉⲛⲟⲓ ⳿ⲛ⳿ⲁⲗⲟⲩ ⲛⲁⲛⲭⲏ ϧⲁ ⲛⲓ⳿ⲥⲧⲟⲓⲭⲓⲟⲛ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓⲕⲟⲥⲙⲟⲥ ⲉⲛⲟⲓ ⳿ⲙⲃⲱⲕ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ.
4 but when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, come of woman, come under law,
ⲇ̅ϩⲟⲧⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧⲁϥ⳿ⲓ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⳿ⲫⲙⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓⲥⲏⲟⲩ ⲁ ⲫϯ ⲟⲩⲱⲣⲡ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉϥϣⲏⲣⲓ ⳿ⲉⲁϥϣⲱⲡⲓ ϧⲁ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲥϩⲓⲙⲓ ⳿ⲉⲁϥϣⲱⲡⲓ ϧⲁ ⲡⲓⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ.
5 that he might redeem those under law, that we might receive sonship.
ⲉ̅ϩⲓⲛⲁ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉϥϣⲏⲡ ⲛⲏⲉⲧϧⲁ ⲡⲓⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ϩⲓⲛⲁ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲛϭⲓ ⳿ⲛϯⲙⲉⲧϣⲏⲣⲓ.
6 But because ye are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
ⲋ̅ⲟⲧⲓ ⲇⲉ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲛⲑⲱⲧⲉⲛ ϩⲁⲛϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲁ ⲫϯ ⲧⲁⲟⲩⲟ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲡ͞ⲛⲁ̅ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲉϥϣⲏⲣⲓ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϧⲣⲏⲓ ⳿ⲉⲛⲉⲧⲉⲛϩⲏ ⲧ ⲉϥⲱϣ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϫⲉ ⲁⲃⲃⲁ ⳿ⲫⲓⲱⲧ.
7 So thou art no longer bondman, but son; but if son, heir also through God.
ⲍ̅ϩⲱⲥⲧⲉ ⳿ⲛⲑⲟⲕ ⲟⲩⲃⲱⲕ ⲁⲛ ϫⲉ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲟⲩϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲓⲥϫⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲩϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲓⲉ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲕⲗⲏⲣⲟⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲟⲛ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲉⲛ ⲫϯ.
8 But then indeed, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods;
ⲏ̅ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲥⲏⲟⲩ ⲙⲉⲛ ⳿ⲉⲧⲉ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲥⲱⲟⲩⲛ ⳿ⲙⲫϯ ⲁⲛ ⲁⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲉⲣⲃⲱⲕ ⳿ⲛⲛⲏ ⲫⲩⲥⲓ ⲉⲧⲉ ϩⲁⲛⲛⲟⲩϯ ⲁⲛ ⲛⲉ.
9 but now, knowing God, but rather being known by God, how do ye turn again to the weak and beggarly principles to which ye desire to be again anew in bondage?
ⲑ̅ϯⲛⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲥⲟⲩⲉⲛ ⲫϯ ⲙⲁⲗⲗⲟⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲁ ⲫϯ ⲥⲟⲩⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ ⲡⲱⲥ ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲕⲱϯ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⲟⲛ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϧⲣⲏⲓ ⳿ⲉⲛⲓϫⲱⲃ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛϩⲏ ⲕⲓ ⳿ⲛ⳿ⲥⲧⲟⲓⲭⲓⲟⲛ ⲛⲏⲉⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩⲱϣ ⳿ⲉⲉⲣⲃⲱⲕ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲕⲉⲥⲟⲡ.
10 Ye observe days and months and times and years.
ⲓ̅⳿ⲉⲁⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛϯ⳿ϩⲑⲏⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲉϩⲁⲛ⳿ⲉϩⲟⲟⲩ ⲛⲉⲙ ϩⲁⲛⲁⲃⲏⲧ ⲛⲉⲙ ϩⲁⲛⲥⲏⲟⲩ ⲛⲉⲙ ϩⲁⲛⲣⲟⲙⲡⲓ.
11 I am afraid of you, lest indeed I have laboured in vain as to you.
ⲓ̅ⲁ̅ϯⲉⲣϩⲟϯ ϧⲁⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛϩⲏ ⲙⲏⲡⲱⲥ ⲉⲧⲁⲓ ϭⲓϧⲓⲥⲓ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲉⲛ ϩⲓⲕⲏ.
12 Be as I [am], for I also [am] as ye, brethren, I beseech you: ye have not at all wronged me.
ⲓ̅ⲃ̅ϣⲱⲡⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲣⲏϯ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ϩⲱ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛⲣⲏϯ ⲛⲁ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ϯϯϩⲟ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛϭ ⲓⲧ ⳿ⲛϫⲟⲛⲥ ⳿ⲛ⳿ϩⲗⲓ.
13 But ye know that in weakness of the flesh I announced the glad tidings to you at the first;
ⲓ̅ⲅ̅ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛ⳿ⲉⲙⲓ ⲇⲉ ϫⲉ ⲉⲑⲃⲉ ⲟⲩϣⲱⲛⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ϯⲥⲁⲣⲝ ⲁⲓϩⲓϣⲉⲛⲛⲟⲩϥⲓ ⲛⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲛϣⲟⲣⲡ.
14 and my temptation, which [was] in my flesh, ye did not slight nor reject with contempt; but ye received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus.
ⲓ̅ⲇ̅ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛⲡⲓⲣⲁⲥⲙⲟⲥ ⲉⲧⲭⲏ ϧⲉⲛ ⲧⲁⲥⲁⲣⲝ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛϣⲟϣϥ ⲟⲩⲇⲉ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛϩⲓⲑⲁϥ ⳿ⲛⲥⲱϥ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲁⲣⲉⲧⲉⲛϣⲟⲡϥ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲫⲣⲏϯ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲫϯ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲫⲣⲏϯ ⳿ⲙⲠⲭ̅ⲥ̅ Ⲓⲏ̅ⲥ̅.
15 What then [was] your blessedness? for I bear you witness that, if possible, plucking out your own eyes ye would have given [them] to me.
ⲓ̅ⲉ̅ⲁϥⲑⲱⲛ ⲟⲩⲛ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲓⲥⲙⲟⲥ ϯⲉⲣ ⲙⲉⲑⲣⲉ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲛⲱⲧⲉⲛ ϫⲉ ⲉⲛⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ⳿ϣϫⲟⲙ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲉⲫⲉⲣⲕ ⲛⲉⲧⲉⲛⲃⲁⲗ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛⲁⲣⲉⲧⲉⲛⲛⲁⲧⲏⲓⲧⲟⲩ ⲛⲏⲓ ⲡⲉ.
16 So I have become your enemy in speaking the truth to you?
ⲓ̅ⲋ̅ϩⲱⲥⲧⲉ ⲁⲓⲉⲣϫⲁϫⲓ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲉⲛ ϫⲉ ϯ ⲧⲁⲙⲟ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⲉⲑⲙⲏⲓ.
17 They are not rightly zealous after you, but desire to shut you out [from us], that ye may be zealous after them.
ⲓ̅ⲍ̅ⲥⲉⲭⲟϩ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲛⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲁⲛ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲉⲩⲟⲩⲱϣ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϣⲑⲁⲙ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲉⲛ ϩⲓⲛⲁ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲭⲟϩ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲟⲩ.
18 But [it is] right to be zealous at all times in what is right, and not only when I am present with you —
ⲓ̅ⲏ̅ⲛⲁⲛⲉⲥ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲉⲭⲟϩ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲓⲡⲉⲑⲛⲁⲛⲉϥ ⳿ⲛⲥⲏⲟⲩ ⲛⲓⲃⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲉⲓⲭⲏ ϧⲁⲧⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩⲁⲧϥ ⲁⲛ.
19 my children, of whom I again travail in birth until Christ shall have been formed in you:
ⲓ̅ⲑ̅ⲛⲁϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲛⲁⲓ ⳿ⲉϯ ϯⲛⲁⲕϩⲓ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲕⲉⲥⲟⲡ ϣⲁⲧⲉ Ⲡⲭ̅ⲥ̅ ϭⲓⲙⲟⲣⲫⲏ ϧⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ.
20 and I should wish to be present with you now, and change my voice, for I am perplexed as to you.
ⲕ̅ⲛⲁⲓⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲉ⳿ⲓ ϩⲁⲣⲱⲧⲉⲛ ϯⲛⲟⲩ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲉϣⲓⲃϯ ⳿ⲛⲧⲁ⳿ⲥⲙⲏ ϫⲉ ϯϣⲟⲗϩ ⳿ⲛϩⲏⲧ ϧⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ.
21 Tell me, ye who are desirous of being under law, do ye not listen to the law?
ⲕ̅ⲁ̅⳿ⲁϫⲟⲥ ⲟⲩⲛ ⲛⲏⲓ ⲁⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩⲱϣ ⳿ⲉϣⲱⲡⲓ ϧⲁ ⲡⲓⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲥⲱⲟⲩⲛ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲁⲛ.
22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons; one of the maid servant, and one of the free woman.
ⲕ̅ⲃ̅⳿ⲥ⳿ⲥϧⲏⲟⲩⲧ ⲅⲁⲣ ϫⲉ ⲁⲃⲣⲁⲁⲙ ⲁϥ⳿ϫⲫⲉ ϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲃ̅ ⲟⲩⲁⲓ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ϯⲃⲱⲕⲓ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲟⲩⲁⲓ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ϯⲣⲉⲙϩⲏ.
23 But he [that was] of the maid servant was born according to flesh, and he [that was] of the free woman through the promise.
ⲕ̅ⲅ̅ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲡⲓ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲙⲉⲛ ϧⲉⲛ ϯⲃⲱⲕⲓ ⲉⲧⲁⲩⲙⲁⲥϥ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⲥⲁⲣⲝ ⲡⲓ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲇⲉ ϧⲉⲛ ϯⲣⲉⲙϩⲏ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲉⲡⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲓⲁ ⲡⲉ.
24 Which things have an allegorical sense; for these are two covenants: one from mount Sinai, gendering to bondage, which is Hagar.
ⲕ̅ⲇ̅ⲉⲧⲉ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲛⲉ ⳿ⲉϣⲁⲩⲉⲣⲁⲗⲗⲏⲅⲟⲣⲓⲛ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲟⲩ ⲇⲓ⳿ⲁⲑⲏⲕⲏ ⲃ̅ϯ ⲛⲉ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⲙⲉⲛ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲡⲧⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲥⲓⲛⲁ ⲉⲥⲙⲓⲥⲓ ⲉⲩⲙⲉⲧⲃⲱⲕ ⲉⲧⲉ ⲁⲅⲁⲣ ⲧⲉ.
25 For Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which [is] now, for she is in bondage with her children;
ⲕ̅ⲉ̅ⲁⲅⲁⲣ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉ ⳿ⲡⲧⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲥⲓⲛⲁ ⲉϥⲭⲏ ϧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲧⲁⲣⲁⲃⲓⲁ ⲁϥⲟⲓ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛ⳿ϣⲫⲏⲣ ⳿ⲛϯⲙⲁϯ ⲛⲉⲙ ⳿ⲓⲗ̅ⲏ̅ⲙ̅ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ϯⲛⲟⲩ ⳿ⲥⲟⲓ ⲅⲁⲣ ⳿ⲙⲃⲱⲕⲓ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲛⲉⲥϣⲏⲣⲓ.
26 but the Jerusalem above is free, which is our mother.
ⲕ̅ⲋ̅⳿ⲓⲗ̅ⲏ̅ⲙ̅ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧⲉ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲡϣⲱⲓ ⲟⲩⲣⲉⲙϩⲏ ⲧⲉ ⲉⲧⲉ ⲧⲉⲛⲙⲁⲩ ⲧⲉ.
27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break out and cry, thou that travailest not; because the children of the desolate are more numerous than [those] of her that has a husband.
ⲕ̅ⲍ̅⳿ⲥ⳿ⲥϧⲏⲟⲩⲧ ⲅⲁⲣ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲛⲟϥ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟ ϯ ⲁϭⲣⲏⲛ ⲑⲏ ⲉⲧⲉ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲥⲙⲓⲥⲓ ⲫⲱϫⲓ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲱϣ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲑⲏ ⲉⲧⲉ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲥϯⲛⲁⲕϩⲓ ϫⲉ ⲛⲁϣⲉ ⲛⲓϣⲏ ⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ϯϣⲁϥⲏ ⲙⲁⲗⲗⲟⲛ ⳿ⲉϩⲟⲧⲉ ⲑⲏ ⲉⲧⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛⲧⲁⲥ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓϩⲁⲓ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ.
28 But ye, brethren, after the pattern of Isaac, are children of promise.
ⲕ̅ⲏ̅⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲉⲛ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⳿ Ⲓⲥⲁⲁⲕ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲛ ϩⲁⲛϣⲏⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ϯⲉⲡⲁⲅⲅⲉⲗⲓⲁ.
29 But as then he that was born according to flesh persecuted him [that was born] according to Spirit, so also [it is] now.
ⲕ̅ⲑ̅ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲫⲣⲏϯ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲥⲏⲟⲩ ⲉⲧⲧⲏ ⲛⲁⲣⲉ ⲡⲓⲙⲓⲥⲓ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⲥⲁⲣⲝ ϭⲟϫⲓ ⳿ⲛⲥⲁ ⲡⲓⲙⲓⲥⲓ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⲡⲓⲡ͞ⲛⲁ̅ ⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ⲟⲛ ϯⲛⲟⲩ.
30 But what says the scripture? Cast out the maid servant and her son; for the son of the maid servant shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.
ⲗ̅ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉ ⲉⲧⲉ ϯ⳿ⲅⲣⲁⲫⲏ ϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ ϩⲓⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲁⲓⲃⲱⲕⲓ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡⲉⲥϣⲏ ⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛⲛⲉ ⳿ⲡϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲅⲁⲣ ⳿ⲛϯⲃⲱⲕⲓ ⲉⲣ⳿ⲕⲗⲏ ⲣⲟⲛⲟⲙⲓⲛ ⲛⲉⲙ ⳿ⲡϣⲏⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛϯⲣⲉⲙϩⲉ.
31 So then, brethren, we are not maid servant's children, but [children] of the free woman.
ⲗ̅ⲁ̅⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲉⲛ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲛ ⲛⲉⲛϣⲏⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛϯⲃⲱⲕⲓ ⲁⲛ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ϯⲣⲉⲙϩⲉ
