Ecclesiastes 1
1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
ജെറുശലേം രാജാവും ദാവീദിന്റെ പുത്രനുമായ സഭാപ്രസംഗിയുടെ വാക്കുകൾ:
2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities! all is vanity.
“അർഥശൂന്യം! അർഥശൂന്യം!” സഭാപ്രസംഗി പറയുന്നു. “നിശ്ശേഷം അർഥശൂന്യം! സകലതും അർഥശൂന്യമാകുന്നു.”
3 What profit hath man of all his labour wherewith he laboureth under the sun?
സൂര്യനുകീഴിൽ അധ്വാനിക്കുന്ന മനുഷ്യൻ തന്റെ പ്രയത്നത്തിൽനിന്നും എന്തു നേടുന്നു?
4 [One] generation passeth away, and [another] generation cometh, but the earth standeth for ever.
തലമുറകൾ വരുന്നു, തലമുറകൾ പോകുന്നു; എന്നാൽ ഭൂമി ശാശ്വതമായി നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു.
5 The sun also riseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.
സൂര്യൻ ഉദിക്കുകയും സൂര്യൻ അസ്തമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു, അത് അതിന്റെ ഉദയസ്ഥാനത്തേക്കു ദ്രുതഗതിയിൽ മടങ്ങിപ്പോകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
6 The wind goeth towards the south, and turneth about towards the north: it turneth about continually, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.
കാറ്റ് തെക്കോട്ട് വീശുന്നു, വടക്കോട്ടത് തിരിഞ്ഞുകറങ്ങുന്നു; നിരന്തരം തന്റെ ഗതി ആവർത്തിച്ച് ചുറ്റിച്ചുറ്റി കറങ്ങുന്നു.
7 All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full: unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.
എല്ലാ നീരൊഴുക്കുകളും സമുദ്രത്തിലേക്കൊഴുകുന്നു, എന്നിട്ടും സമുദ്രമൊരിക്കലും നിറയുന്നില്ല. അരുവികൾ എവിടെനിന്ന് ആരംഭിച്ചുവോ അവിടേക്കുതന്നെ അവ പിന്നെയും മടങ്ങിപ്പോകുന്നു.
8 All things are full of toil; none can express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
എല്ലാ വസ്തുതകളും ക്ലേശഭരിതമാണ്, അത് ഒരാൾക്ക് വർണിക്കാവുന്നതിലുമധികം. കണ്ടിട്ടു കണ്ണിന് മതിവരികയോ കേട്ടിട്ടു ചെവിക്ക് തൃപ്തിവരികയോ ചെയ്യുന്നില്ല.
9 That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which will be done: and there is nothing new under the sun.
ഒരിക്കൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതു പിന്നെയും ഉണ്ടാകും, മുൻകാലചെയ്തികൾ പിന്നെയും ആവർത്തിക്കും; സൂര്യനുകീഴിൽ പുതിയതായി ഒന്നുംതന്നെയില്ല.
10 Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already in the ages which were before us.
ഏതിനെയെങ്കിലും ചൂണ്ടി ആർക്കെങ്കിലും പറയാൻ കഴിയുമോ, “നോക്കൂ! ഇതു തികച്ചും പുത്തനായ ഒന്നാണ്?” പണ്ടുപണ്ടേ ഇത് ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു; നമ്മുടെ കാലത്തിനുമുമ്പുതന്നെ ഇത് ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be remembrance of things that are to come with those who shall live afterwards.
പോയ തലമുറയെക്കുറിച്ച് ആരും ഓർക്കുന്നില്ല, വരാനിരിക്കുന്ന തലമുറയെ, അവരുടെ പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നവരും സ്മരിക്കുന്നില്ല.
12 I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
സഭാപ്രസംഗിയായ ഞാൻ ജെറുശലേമിൽ ഇസ്രായേലിന്റെ രാജാവായിരുന്നു.
13 And I applied my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens: this grievous occupation hath God given to the children of men to weary themselves therewith.
ആകാശത്തിനു കീഴിലുള്ള പ്രയത്നങ്ങളെല്ലാം പഠിക്കുന്നതിനും ജ്ഞാനത്തോടെ അപഗ്രഥിക്കുന്നതിനും ഞാൻ ബദ്ധശ്രദ്ധനായിരുന്നു. മാനവരാശിയുടെമേൽ ദൈവം എത്ര ഭീമയായ ഭാരമാണ് വെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്!
14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and pursuit of the wind.
സൂര്യനുകീഴിൽ നിറവേറ്റപ്പെടുന്ന എല്ലാം ഞാൻ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്; അവയെല്ലാം അർഥശൂന്യമാണ്; കാറ്റിനുപിന്നാലെയുള്ള ഓട്ടമാണ്.
15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
വളഞ്ഞതിനെ നേരേയാക്കാൻ സാധിക്കുകയില്ല; ഇല്ലാത്തത് എണ്ണിത്തിട്ടപ്പെടുത്താനും കഴിയുകയില്ല.
16 I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I have become great and have acquired wisdom more than all they that have been before me over Jerusalem; and my heart hath seen much of wisdom and knowledge.
ഞാൻ എന്നോടുതന്നെ പറഞ്ഞു: “നോക്കൂ, എനിക്കുമുമ്പേ ജെറുശലേമിൽ ഭരണം നടത്തിയ മറ്റാരെക്കാളും അധികം ജ്ഞാനത്തിൽ ഞാൻ മുന്നേറിയിരിക്കുന്നു. അവരെക്കാളധികം ജ്ഞാനവും പരിജ്ഞാനവും എന്റെ ഹൃദയം സമ്പാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.”
17 And I applied my heart to the knowledge of wisdom, and to the knowledge of madness and folly: I perceived that this also is a striving after the wind.
പിന്നെ ഞാൻ ജ്ഞാനം ഗ്രഹിക്കാൻ ബദ്ധശ്രദ്ധനായി, അതോടൊപ്പം മതിഭ്രമവും ഭോഷത്വവും. എന്നാൽ ഇതും കാറ്റിനുപിന്നാലെയുള്ള ഓട്ടമാണെന്ന് ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചു.
18 For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
ജ്ഞാനം ഏറുന്നതോടെ ശോകവും ഏറുന്നു; പരിജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെ ആധിക്യം അധികവ്യഥയും നൽകുന്നു.
