Deuteronomy 9
1 Hear, Israel! Thou art to pass over the Jordan this day, to enter in to possess nations greater and mightier than thou, cities great and walled up to heaven,
Ecoute, Israël: tu vas traverser aujourd'hui le Jourdain, pour prendre le territoire de grandes nations beaucoup plus fortes que toi, et pour prendre de grandes villes, dont les remparts montent jusqu'au ciel,
2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard [say], Who can stand before the sons of Anak!
Pour supplanter un peuple grand et nombreux, et de haute taille, les fils d'Enac, que tu connais; car, tu sais le proverbe: Qui résistera en face aux fils d'Enac?
3 Know then this day, that Jehovah thy God is he that goeth over before thee, a consuming fire; he will destroy them, and he will cast them down before thee, and thou shalt dispossess them and cause them to perish quickly, as Jehovah hath said unto thee.
Et tu vas savoir que le Seigneur ton Dieu lui-même marchera à ta tête; ton Dieu est un feu consumant; c'est lui qui les exterminera, c'est lui qui les chassera loin de ta face, et il les détruira promptement, comme te l'a dit le Seigneur.
4 Thou shalt not say in thy heart, when Jehovah thy God thrusteth them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness Jehovah hath brought me in to possess this land; but for the wickedness of these nations doth Jehovah dispossess them from before thee.
Garde-toi de dire en ton cœur, tandis que le Seigneur ton Dieu dissipera ces nations devant toi: C'est à cause de ma justice que le Seigneur m'a conduit, pour me donner en héritage cette terre fortunée. mais c'est à cause de l'iniquité de ces nations que le Seigneur détruira devant toi
5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thy heart, dost thou enter in to possess their land, but for the wickedness of these nations doth Jehovah thy God dispossess them from before thee, and that he may perform the word which Jehovah swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
Non, ce n'est pas à cause de ta justice, ce n'est pas à cause de la sainteté de ton cœur que tu vas avoir leur terre pour héritage, mais c'est à cause de l'iniquité de ces nations que le Seigneur détruira devant toi, afin d'établir l'alliance que le Seigneur a jurée avec nos pères: Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
6 Know therefore that Jehovah thy God doth not give thee this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiff-necked people.
Tu connaîtras aujourd'hui que ce n'est point à cause de ta justice que le Seigneur ton Dieu te donne en héritage cette terre fortunée, à toi, peuple revêche que tu es.
7 Remember, forget not, how thou provokedst Jehovah thy God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came to this place, ye have been rebellious against Jehovah.
Souviens-toi, n'oublie point combien tu as irrité le Seigneur ton Dieu dans le désert, depuis le jour où vous êtes sortis d'Egypte, jusqu'à votre arrivée au lieu ou nous sommes; vous avez persévéré dans l'insoumission au Seigneur.
8 And at Horeb ye provoked Jehovah to wrath, and Jehovah was angry with you, to destroy you,
En Horeb, vous avez irrité le Seigneur, et il s'est courroucé contre vous, au point de vouloir vous exterminer,
9 when I went up the mountain to receive the tables of stone, the tables of the covenant which Jehovah made with you, and I abode in the mountain forty days and forty nights, — I ate no bread and drank no water, —
Comme j'étais monté sur la montagne pour prendre les tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance que le Seigneur a faite avec vous; j'y restai quarante jours et quarante nuits, et je n'y mangeai pas de pain, et je n'y bus pas d'eau.
10 — and Jehovah delivered to me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them [was written] according to all the words which Jehovah spoke with you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.
Et Dieu me donna les deux tables de pierre, écrites du doigt du Seigneur; toutes les paroles que le Seigneur avait dites devant vous sur la montagne, au jour de l'Eglise, y étaient écrites.
11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that Jehovah gave me the two tables of stone, the tables of the covenant.
Le Seigneur me donna donc les deux tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance, après quarante jours et quarante nuits.
12 And Jehovah said unto me, Arise, go down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them: they have made for themselves a molten image.
Et le Seigneur me dit: Lève-toi, et descends bien vite d'ici; car ton peuple, que tu as fait sortir d'Egypte, s'est égaré. Ils se sont promptement écartés de la voie que je leur ai marquée et ils se sont fait une image en fonte.
13 And Jehovah spoke unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people.
Et le Seigneur me dit: Je te l'ai répété plus d'une fois: je connais, j'ai vu ce peuple; c'est un peuple revêche.
14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.
Laisse-moi donc les détruire, et j'effacerai leur nom sous le ciel, et je te mettrai à la tête d'une nation grande et forte, plus nombreuse que celle-ci.
15 And I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire; and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.
Je partis donc; je descendis de la montagne. Or, la montagne était enflammée, et lançait du feu jusqu'au ciel, et je tenais dans mes deux mains les deux tables du témoignage.
16 And I saw, and behold, ye had sinned against Jehovah your God: ye had made for yourselves a molten calf; ye had quickly turned aside from the way which Jehovah had commanded you.
Et, quand je vis que vous aviez péché devant le Seigneur notre Dieu, que vous vous étiez fait une image en fonte, que vous vous étiez écartés de la voie où le Seigneur vous avait prescrit de marcher,
17 And I seized the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.
Je saisis les deux tables, je les jetai de mes deux mains, et je les brisai devant vous;
18 And I fell down before Jehovah, as at the first, forty days and forty nights, — I ate no bread and drank no water, — because of all your sin which ye had sinned, in doing what is evil in the eyes of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger.
Et je priai devant le Seigneur une seconde fois, quarante jours et quarante nuits comme la première, et je ne mangeai pas de pain, et je ne bus point d'eau, et je priai pour tous vos péchés, pour le mal que vous aviez fait devant le Seigneur Dieu en l'irritant ainsi.
19 For I was afraid of the anger and fury wherewith Jehovah was wroth against you to destroy you. And Jehovah listened unto me also at that time.
Je suis encore effrayé du courroux, de la fureur que ressentait le Seigneur contre vous, au point de vouloir vous exterminer; or, en ce temps-là, le Seigneur m'exauça.
20 And with Aaron Jehovah was very angry to destroy him; and I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.
Mais il était courroucé contre Aaron, au point de vouloir l'exterminer; et, en ce temps-là, je priai aussi pour Aaron.
21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burned it with fire, and crushed it, and ground it very small, until it became fine dust; and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that flowed down from the mountain.
Et votre péché, le veau que tous aviez fabriqué, je le consumai dans le feu, je le pilai, après l'avoir battu et réduit en lames très-minces; je le réduisis en poudre, et je jetai cette poussière dans le torrent qui descend de la montagne.
22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, ye provoked Jehovah to wrath.
Ensuite, au lieu de l'embrasement, au lieu de la tentation, au lieu des sépulcres de la concupiscence, vous irritâtes encore le Seigneur.
23 And when Jehovah sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and take possession of the land which I have given you, ye rebelled against the word of Jehovah your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice.
Et lorsque le Seigneur vous fit sortir de Cadès-Barné, disant: Montez et prenez possession de la terre que je vous donne, vous fûtes encore indociles à la parole du Seigneur votre Dieu, vous n'eûtes point foi en lui, et vous n'obéîtes point à sa voix.
24 Ye have been rebellious against Jehovah from the day that I knew you.
Vous avez été désobéissants envers le Seigneur, à partir du jour où il s'est fait connaître à vous.
25 So I fell down before Jehovah the forty days and forty nights, as I fell down; for Jehovah had said he would destroy you.
Et je priai devant le Seigneur quarante jours et quarante nuits, le même temps que la première fois, car le Seigneur menaçait de vous exterminer.
26 I prayed therefore to Jehovah, and said, Lord Jehovah, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a powerful hand.
Et je priai Dieu, et je dis: Seigneur, roi des dieux, n'exterminez pas votre peuple, votre héritage que vous avez racheté, et que vous avez fait sortir de l'Egypte par votre grande force, par votre main puissante et votre bras très-haut.
27 Remember thy servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not at the stubbornness of this people, nor at their wickedness, nor at their sin;
Souvenez-vous d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob, vos serviteurs, à qui vous avez juré par vous-même; n'attachez point vos regards sur l'endurcissement de ce peuple, sur ses impiétés, sur ses péchés.
28 lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because Jehovah was not able to bring them into the land which he had promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.
Prenez garde que les habitants de la terre d'où vous l'avez fait sortir ne disent: C'est parce qu'il n'a pu les introduire dans la terre dont il leur avait parlé, c'est aussi parce qu'il les avait en haine, que le Seigneur les a conduits dans le désert afin de les faire périr.
29 They are indeed thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out with thy great power and with thy stretched-out arm.
Ce peuple est votre peuple, votre héritage, vous l'avez fait sortir d'Egypte par votre grande force, votre main puissante et votre bras très-haut.
