Deuteronomy 5
1 And Moses called to all Israel, and said to them, Hear, Israel, the statutes and the ordinances that I speak in your ears this day, and learn them, and keep them to do them.
Moïse convoqua tout Israël et leur dit: « Ecoute, Israël, les lois et les ordonnances que je vous fais entendre aujourd’hui; apprenez-les et mettez les soigneusement en pratique.
2 Jehovah our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
Yahweh, notre Dieu, a conclu avec nous une alliance en Horeb.
3 Not with our fathers did Jehovah make this covenant, but with us, [even] us, those [who are] here alive all of us this day.
Ce n’est pas avec nos pères que Yahweh a conclu cette alliance, c’est avec nous, qui sommes ici aujourd’hui tous vivants.
4 Face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire Jehovah spoke with you
Yahweh vous parla face à face sur la montagne, du milieu du feu,
5 (I stood between Jehovah and you at that time, to declare to you the word of Jehovah; for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up to the mountain), saying,
— Je me tenais alors entre Yahweh et vous, pour rapporter sa parole; car vous aviez peur du feu, et vous ne montâtes pas sur la montagne. — Il dit:
6 I am Jehovah thy God who have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
“Je suis Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui t’ai fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, de la maison de servitude.
7 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Tu n’auras pas d’autres dieux devant ma face.
8 Thou shalt not make thyself any graven image, any form of what is in the heavens above, or what is in the earth beneath, or what is in the waters under the earth:
Tu ne te feras pas d’image taillée, ni aucune figure de ce qui est en haut dans le ciel, ou de ce qui est en bas sur la terre, ou de ce qui est dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
9 thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them; for I, Jehovah thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons, and upon the third and upon the fourth [generation] of them that hate me,
Tu ne te prosterneras pas devant eux et ne les serviras passage; car moi, Yahweh, ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux, punissant l’iniquité des pères sur les enfants, sur la troisième et sur la quatrième génération, pour ceux qui me haïssent,
10 and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
et faisant miséricorde jusqu’à mille générations, pour ceux qui m’aiment et qui gardent mes commandements.
11 Thou shalt not idly utter the name of Jehovah thy God; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that idly uttereth his name.
Tu ne prendras pas le nom de Yahweh, ton Dieu en vain; car Yahweh ne laissera pas impuni celui qui prendra son nom en vain.
12 Keep the sabbath day to hallow it, as Jehovah thy God hath commanded thee.
Observe le jour du sabbat, pour le sanctifier, comme te l’a ordonné Yahweh, ton Dieu.
13 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work;
Pendant six jours tu travailleras et tu feras tout ton ouvrage.
14 but the seventh day is the sabbath of Jehovah thy God: thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy bondman, nor thy handmaid, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy sojourner that is within thy gates; that thy bondman and thy handmaid may rest as well as thou.
Mais le septième jour est un sabbat consacré à Yahweh, ton Dieu: tu ne feras aucun ouvrage, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton bœuf, ni ton âne, ni aucune de tes bêtes, ni l’étranger qui est dans tes portes, afin que ton serviteur et ta servante se reposent comme toi.
15 And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and that Jehovah thy God brought thee out thence with a powerful hand and with a stretched-out arm; therefore Jehovah thy God hath commanded thee to observe the sabbath day.
Tu te souviendras que tu as été esclave au pays d’Égypte, et que Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’en a fait sortir d’une main forte et d’un bras étendu: c’est pourquoi Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’a ordonné d’observer le jour du sabbat.
16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as Jehovah thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may be well with thee in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.
Honore ton père et ta mère, comme Yahweh, ton Dieu te l’a ordonné, afin que tes jours soient prolongés et que tu sois heureux dans le pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne.
17 Thou shalt not kill.
Tu ne tueras pas.
18 Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
Tu ne commettras pas d’adultère.
19 Neither shalt thou steal.
Tu ne déroberas pas.
20 Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.
21 Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, nor his bondman, nor his handmaid, his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.
Tu ne convoiteras pas la femme de ton prochain. Tu ne désireras pas la maison de ton prochain, ni son champ, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni rien de ce qui appartient à ton prochain. »
22 These words Jehovah spoke to all your congregation on the mountain from the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the obscurity, with a great voice, and he added no more; and he wrote them on two tables of stone, and gave them to me.
Telles sont les paroles que Yahweh adressa à toute votre assemblée, sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, de la nuée et de l’obscurité, d’une voix forte; et il n’ajouta rien. Il les écrivit sur deux tables de pierre, qu’il me donna.
23 And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, and the mountain burned with fire, that ye came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
Lorsque vous eûtes entendu la voix du milieu des ténèbres, la montagne étant toute en feu, vous vous approchâtes de moi, tous vos chefs de tribus et vos anciens,
24 and ye said, Behold, Jehovah our God has shewn us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice from the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God talks with man, and he lives.
et vous dîtes: « Voici que Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous a montré sa gloire et sa grandeur, et nous avons entendu sa voix du milieu du feu; aujourd’hui nous avons vu Dieu parler à l’homme et l’homme rester vivant.
25 And now, why should we die? for this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of Jehovah our God any more, we shall die.
Et maintenant pourquoi mourrions-nous? Car ce grand feu nous dévorera; si nous entendons encore la voix de Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous mourrons.
26 For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we, and has lived?
Car parmi toute chair, quel est celui qui a entendu, comme nous, la voix du Dieu vivant parlant du milieu du feu, et qui soit demeuré en vie?
27 Come thou near, and hear all that Jehovah our God will say; and speak thou to us all that Jehovah our God will speak to thee; and we will hear it, and do it.
Toi, approche-toi, et écoute tout ce que dira Yahweh, notre Dieu, et tu nous rapporteras tout ce que t’aura dit Yahweh, notre Dieu: nous l’écouterons et nous le ferons. »
28 And Jehovah heard the voice of your words, when ye spoke to me; and Jehovah said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people that have spoken to thee: they have well spoken all that they have spoken.
Yahweh entendit vos paroles tandis que vous me parliez, et Yahweh me dit: « J’ai entendu les paroles que ce peuple t’a adressées: tout ce qu’ils ont dit est bien.
29 Oh that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments continually, that it might be well with them and with their sons for ever!
Oh! S’ils avaient toujours ce même cœur pour me craindre et pour observer mes commandements, afin qu’ils soient heureux à jamais, eux et leurs enfants!
30 Go, say unto them, Get you into your tents again.
Va, dis-leur: Retournez dans vos tentes.
31 But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.
Mais toi, reste ici avec moi, et je te dirai tous les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que tu leur enseigneras, pour qu’ils les mettent en pratique dans le pays que je leur donne en possession.
32 Take heed then to do as Jehovah your God hath commanded you: turn not aside to the right hand or to the left.
Vous aurez soin de faire ce que Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous a commandé; vous ne vous en détournerez ni à droite ni à gauche,
33 In all the way that Jehovah your God hath commanded you shall ye walk, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
mais vous suivrez en tout la voie que Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous a prescrite, afin que vous viviez et que vous soyez heureux, et que vous prolongiez vos jours dans le pays que vous posséderez.” »
