Deuteronomy 20
1 When thou goest out to war against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, [and] a people more numerous than thou, thou shalt not fear them; for Jehovah thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
Lorsque tu sortiras pour combattre contre tes ennemis, et que tu verras des chevaux et des chars, un peuple plus nombreux que toi, tu ne les craindras point, car Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui t’a fait monter du pays d’Égypte, est avec toi.
2 And it shall be, when ye approach unto the battle, that the priest shall draw near and speak unto the people,
Quand vous vous disposerez au combat, le prêtre s’avancera et parlera au peuple.
3 and shall say unto them, Hear, Israel, ye are approaching this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be afraid of them;
Il leur dira: « Écoute Israël! Vous vous disposez aujourd’hui au combat contre vos ennemis; que votre cœur ne faiblisse point, soyez sans crainte, ne vous effrayez point et ne soyez point terrifiés devant eux;
4 for Jehovah your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
car Yahweh, votre Dieu, marche avec vous, pour combattre pour vous contre vos ennemis et vous sauver. »
5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
Les officiers parleront ensuite au peuple, en disant: « Qui est-ce qui a bâti une maison neuve, et ne l’a pas encore dédiée? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu’il ne meure dans la bataille et qu’un autre ne la dédie.
6 And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not eaten of it? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.
Qui est-ce qui a planté une vigne, et n’a pas encore joui de ses fruits? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu’il ne meure dans la bataille et qu’un autre n’en jouisse.
7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
Qui est-ce qui s’est fiancé à une femme, et ne l’a pas encore épousée? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu’il ne meure dans la bataille et qu’un autre ne l’épouse. »
8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and shall say, What man is there that is timid and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart melt as well as his heart.
Les officiers parleront encore au peuple et diront: « Qui est-ce qui a peur et qui sent son cœur faiblir? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne chez lui, afin que le cœur de ses frères ne défaille pas comme le sien. »
9 And it shall be, when the officers have ended speaking unto the people, that they shall place captains of the hosts at the head of the people.
Quand les officiers auront achevé de parler au peuple, on placera les chefs des troupes à la tête du peuple.
10 When thou approachest unto a city to fight against it, thou shalt proclaim peace unto it.
Lorsque tu t’approcheras d’une ville pour l’attaquer, tu lui offriras la paix.
11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then all the people that are found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.
Si elle te fait une réponse de paix et t’ouvre ses portes, tout le peuple qui s’y trouvera te sera tributaire et te servira.
12 And if it will not make peace with thee, but will make war with thee, then thou shalt besiege it;
Si elle ne fait pas la paix avec toi, et qu’elle veuille te faire la guerre, tu l’assiégeras et,
13 and when Jehovah thy God delivereth it into thy hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:
quand Yahweh, ton Dieu, l’aura livrée entre tes mains, tu feras passer tous les mâles au fil de l’épée.
14 only the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that shall be in the city, all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take as booty for thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee
Mais les femmes, les enfants, le bétail, et tout ce qui sera dans la ville, tout son butin, tu le prendras pour toi, et tu pourras manger le butin de tes ennemis que Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’aura donné.
15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities that are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
C’est ainsi que tu agiras à l’égard de toutes les villes qui sont très loin de toi, et qui ne sont pas du nombre des villes de ces nations-ci.
16 But of the cities of these peoples which Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth,
Mais quant aux villes de ces peuples que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne pour héritage, tu n’y laisseras la vie à rien de ce qui respire.
17 but shalt utterly devote them to destruction, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as Jehovah thy God hath commanded thee;
Car tu dévoueras ces peuples par anathème: les Héthéens, les Amorrhéens, les Chananéens, les Phérézéens, les Hévéens et les Jébuséens, comme Yahweh, ton Dieu, te l’a ordonné,
18 that they teach you not to do according to all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods, so that ye sin against Jehovah your God.
afin qu’ils ne vous apprennent pas à imiter toutes les abominations qu’ils font envers leurs dieux, et que vous ne péchiez point contre Yahweh, votre Dieu.
19 When thou shalt besiege a city many days, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by lifting up an axe against them; for thou canst eat of them; and thou shalt not cut them down, for is the tree of the field a man that it should be besieged?
Si tu assièges une ville pendant de longs jours, combattant contre elle pour t’en emparer, tu ne détruiras pas les arbres en y portant la hache; car tu en mangeras le fruit, et tu ne les abattras pas: l’arbre des champs est-il un homme pour que tu l’assièges?
20 Only the trees which thou knowest are not trees for meat, thou mayest destroy and cut them down, and build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.
Mais les arbres que tu sais n’être pas des arbres servant à la nourriture, tu pourras les détruire et les abattre, et en construire des machines contre la ville qui est en guerre avec toi, jusqu’à ce qu’elle succombe.
