Deuteronomy 2
1 And we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as Jehovah had said unto me; and we went round mount Seir many days.
»So machten wir denn kehrt, zogen nach der Wüste hin in der Richtung nach dem Schilfmeer, wie der HERR mir geboten hatte, und wanderten lange Zeit im Bogen um das Gebirge Seir herum.
2 And Jehovah spoke to me, saying,
Da sagte der HERR zu mir:
3 Ye have gone round this mountain long enough: turn you northward.
›Ihr seid nun lange genug um dieses Gebirge herumgezogen; wendet euch jetzt nordwärts
4 And command the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you; and ye shall be very guarded:
und gib dem Volk folgende Weisung: Ihr seid jetzt im Begriff, das Gebiet eurer Brüder, der Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seir wohnen, zu durchziehen, und sie werden Furcht vor euch haben; aber hütet euch wohl,
5 attack them not; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot-breadth; for I have given mount Seir as a possession unto Esau.
Krieg mit ihnen anzufangen! Denn ich werde euch nichts von ihrem Lande geben, auch nicht einen Fußbreit, weil ich das Gebirge Seir dem Esau als Erbbesitz gegeben habe.
6 Ye shall buy of them food for money, that ye may eat; and water shall ye also buy of them for money, that ye may drink;
Lebensmittel für euren Bedarf sollt ihr von ihnen für Geld kaufen, und sogar Wasser zum Trinken sollt ihr von ihnen für Geld erstehen;
7 for Jehovah thy God hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand. He hath known thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years hath Jehovah thy God been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
denn der HERR, dein Gott, hat dich in all deinen Unternehmungen gesegnet; er hat sich deiner während deiner Wanderung durch diese große Wüste angenommen; nun schon vierzig Jahre hindurch ist der HERR, dein Gott, mit dir gewesen, so daß es dir an nichts gemangelt hat.‹
8 And we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, by the plain, by Elath, and by Ezion-geber, and we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
So wanderten wir denn weiter, weg von unseren Brüdern, den Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seir wohnten, weg von der Straße durch die Niederung (am Jordan), weg von Elath und Ezjon-Geber, änderten dann die Marschrichtung und schlugen den Weg nach der Steppe der Moabiter ein.
9 And Jehovah said to me, Distress not the Moabites, neither engage with them in battle; for I will not give thee of their land a possession; for unto the children of Lot have I given Ar as a possession.
Da sagte der HERR zu mir: ›Greife die Moabiter nicht an und laß dich in keinen Krieg mit ihnen ein! Denn ich werde dir von ihrem Lande nichts zum Besitz geben, weil ich Ar den Nachkommen Lots als Besitztum gegeben habe.‹
10 (The Emim dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakim.
[Ehemals haben die Emiter darin gewohnt, ein großes, zahlreiches und hochgewachsenes Volk wie die Enakiter.
11 They also are reckoned as giants like the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.
Auch sie wurden, wie die Enakiter, für Rephaiter gehalten; die Moabiter aber nannten sie Emiter.
12 And in Seir dwelt the Horites in times past; and the children of Esau dispossessed them, and destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did to the land of their possession, which Jehovah gave to them.)
Und in Seir wohnten ehemals die Horiter; aber die Nachkommen Esaus verdrängten sie aus ihrem Besitz, rotteten sie vor sich her aus und ließen sich an ihrer Statt nieder, gerade so wie Israel es mit dem von ihm besetzten Lande gemacht hat, das der HERR ihnen gegeben hatte.] –
13 Now rise up, and pass over the torrent Zered. And we passed over the torrent Zered.
›Macht euch also jetzt auf und zieht über den Fluß Sered!‹ Da zogen wir über den Fluß Sered.
14 Now the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we had come over the torrent Zered, were thirty-eight years; until the whole generation of the men of war was consumed from the midst of the camp, as Jehovah had sworn unto them.
Die Zeit unserer Wanderung aber von Kades-Barnea bis zu unserm Übergang über den Fluß Sered hat achtunddreißig Jahre betragen, bis das ganze Geschlecht der kriegstüchtigen Männer aus dem Lager weggestorben war, wie der HERR es ihnen zugeschworen hatte.
15 Moreover the hand of Jehovah was against them to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.
Es war aber auch die Hand des HERRN gegen sie gewesen, um sie aus dem Lager bis auf den letzten Mann zu vertilgen.
16 And it came to pass when all the men of war were consumed, having died off from among the people,
Als nun die kriegstüchtigen Männer sämtlich aus dem Volke weggestorben waren,
17 that Jehovah spoke to me, saying,
sagte der HERR so zu mir:
18 Thou art to pass this day over the border of Moab, [which is] Ar,
›Du bist jetzt im Begriff, die Grenze der Moabiter zu überschreiten, an Ar vorüber,
19 and come near over against the children of Ammon; thou shalt not distress them nor attack them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon a possession; for unto the children of Lot have I given it as a possession.
und wirst nun in die Nähe des Gebiets der Ammoniter kommen. Greife sie nicht an und laß dich in keinen Krieg mit ihnen ein! Denn ich werde dir vom Lande der Ammoniter nichts zum Besitz geben, weil ich es den Nachkommen Lots zum Erbbesitz verliehen habe.‹ –
20 (That also is reckoned a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in time past, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummim;
[Für ein Land der Rephaiter wird auch dieses gehalten: Rephaiter haben ehemals in ihm gewohnt, welche die Ammoniter aber Samsummiter nannten:
21 a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakim; and Jehovah destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them, and dwelt in their stead;
ein großes, zahlreiches und hochgewachsenes Volk wie die Enakiter; aber der HERR rottete sie vor ihnen her aus, so daß diese ihnen ihr Land wegnahmen und sich an ihrer Statt niederließen,
22 as he did to the children of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, from before whom he destroyed the Horites; and they dispossessed them, and dwelt in their stead, even to this day.
wie er es auch bei den Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seir wohnen, getan hat, vor denen er die Horiter ausrottete, so daß sie ihnen ihr Land wegnahmen und sich an ihrer Statt bis auf den heutigen Tag niedergelassen haben.
23 And the Avvites who dwelt in the hamlets as far as Gazah — the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)
Auch die Awwiter, die in Gehöften bis Gaza hin wohnten, wurden von den Kaphthoritern ausgerottet, die aus Kaphthor ausgewandert waren und sich an ihrer Statt ansiedelten.] –
24 Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon. Behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land: begin, take possession, and engage with him in battle.
›Brecht nun unverweilt auf und geht über den Fluß Arnon! Ich gebe hiermit den Amoriter Sihon, den König von Hesbon, und sein Land in deine Gewalt. Mache dich sofort an die Eroberung und greife ihn mit den Waffen an!
25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the peoples under the whole heaven; who will hear report of thee, and will tremble, and quake because of thee.
Vom heutigen Tage an will ich Furcht und Schrecken vor dir sich auf die Völker unter dem ganzen Himmel lagern lassen: wenn sie nur die Kunde von dir vernehmen, sollen sie vor dir zittern und beben!‹«
26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon the king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
»Da schickte ich Gesandte aus der Wüste Kedemoth an Sihon, den König von Hesbon, mit folgender friedlichen Botschaft:
27 Let me pass through thy land: by the highway alone will I go; I will neither turn to the right hand nor to the left.
›Laß mich durch dein Land hindurchziehen! ich will überall auf der Landstraße bleiben und weder nach rechts noch nach links davon abweichen.
28 Thou shalt sell me food for money that I may eat; and thou shalt give me water for money that I may drink; I will only pass through on my feet,
Lebensmittel zum Unterhalt sollst du mir für Geld verkaufen und ebenso Wasser zum Trinken mir für Geld überlassen: ich will lediglich zu Fuß hindurchziehen –
29 — as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me, — until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which Jehovah our God giveth us.
wie auch die Nachkommen Esaus, die in Seir wohnen, und die Moabiter, die in Ar wohnen, es mit mir gehalten haben –, bis ich über den Jordan in das Land hinüberziehe, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns geben will.‹
30 But Sihon the king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for Jehovah thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obdurate, that he might give him into thy hand, as it is this day.
Aber Sihon, der König von Hesbon, wollte uns den Durchzug durch sein Land nicht gestatten; denn der HERR, dein Gott, hatte seinen Sinn hart und sein Herz trotzig gemacht, um ihn in deine Gewalt zu geben, wie der heutige Tag es klar zeigt.
31 And Jehovah said to me, Behold, I begin to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin, take possession, that thou mayest possess his land.
Da sagte der HERR zu mir: ›Du weißt, daß ich Sihon und sein Land dir bereits preisgegeben habe; mache dich sofort an die Besetzung seines Landes, um es einzunehmen!‹
32 And Sihon came out against us for battle, he and all his people, to Jahaz.
Als nun Sihon uns mit seinem ganzen Kriegsvolk entgegenzog, um bei Jahaz mit uns zu kämpfen,
33 But Jehovah our God gave him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and his whole people.
gab ihn der HERR, unser Gott, in unsere Gewalt, so daß wir ihn samt seinen Söhnen und seinem ganzen Kriegsvolk besiegten.
34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every city, men, and women, and little ones: we let none escape.
Wir eroberten damals alle seine Städte und vollstreckten in jeder Ortschaft den Bann an Männern, Weibern und Kindern, ohne einen einzigen entrinnen zu lassen;
35 Only the cattle we took as booty for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.
nur das Vieh und den Raub aus den von uns eroberten Städten behielten wir als Beute für uns.
36 From Aroer, which is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the ravine even to Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: Jehovah our God delivered all before us.
Von Aroer, das am Ufer des Arnonflusses liegt, und überhaupt von den Städten, die an dem Flusse liegen, bis nach Gilead hin gab es keinen einzigen festen Platz, der für uns uneinnehmbar gewesen wäre; alles gab der HERR, unser Gott, in unsere Gewalt.
37 Only thou didst not approach the land of the children of Ammon, the whole border of the river Jabbok, nor the cities of the mountain, nor to whatsoever Jehovah our God had forbidden us.
Nur das Land der Ammoniter habt ihr unberührt gelassen, alles, was seitwärts vom Flusse Jabbok liegt, und die Ortschaften im Berglande, überhaupt alles, was der HERR, unser Gott, uns verboten hatte.«
