Acts 23
1 And Paul, fixing his eyes on the council, said, Brethren, I have walked in all good conscience with God unto this day.
Paulus sah den Hohen Rat mit festem Blick an und sprach: "Liebe Brüder, bis heute bin ich stets mit reinem Gewissen vor Gott gewandelt."
2 But the high priest Ananias ordered those standing by him to smite his mouth.
Bei diesen Worten befahl der Hohepriester Ananias den anwesenden Dienern, Paulus auf den Mund zu schlagen.
3 Then Paul said to him, God will smite thee, whited wall. And thou, dost thou sit judging me according to the law, and breaking the law commandest me to be smitten?
Da sprach Paulus zu ihm: "Gott wird dich schlagen, du getünchte Wand! Du sitzt da, um mich nach dem Gesetz zu richten, und läßt mich schlagen im Widerspruch mit dem Gesetz?"
4 And those that stood by said, Dost thou rail against the high priest of God?
"Was? Du schmähst den Hohenpriester Gottes?", so fragen ihn die Diener.
5 And Paul said, I was not conscious, brethren, that he was high priest; for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evilly of the ruler of thy people.
"Brüder", versetzte Paulus, "ich habe nicht gewußt, daß hier ein Hoherpriester ist; steht doch geschrieben: Gegen einen Oberen deines Volkes sollst du nicht übel reden."
6 But Paul, knowing that the one part [of them] were of the Sadducees and the other of the Pharisees, cried out in the council, Brethren, I am a Pharisee, son of Pharisees: I am judged concerning the hope and resurrection of [the] dead.
Da nun Paulus wußte, daß der Hohe Rat teils aus Sadduzäern, teils aus Pharisäern bestand, rief er laut: "Brüder, ich bin ein Pharisäer, und auch meine Ahnen waren Pharisäer. Wegen meiner Hoffnung auf die Totenauferstehung stehe ich hier vor Gericht."
7 And when he had spoken this, there was a tumult of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided.
Diese Worte erregten einen heftigen Zwist zwischen den Pharisäern und den Sadduzäern, so daß sich die Versammlung spaltete.
8 For Sadducees say there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but Pharisees confess both of them.
- Die Sadduzäer leugnen nämlich die Auferstehung und das Dasein von Engeln und Geistern, während die Pharisäer beides anerkennen. —
9 And there was a great clamour, and the scribes of the Pharisees' part rising up contended, saying, We find nothing evil in this man; and if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel...
Es erhob sich ein lautes Geschrei. Endlich standen einige Schriftgelehrte der pharisäischen Partei von ihren Sitzen auf und sagten in scharfem Ton: "Wir finden an diesem Menschen nichts Böses. Hat aber ein Geist oder ein Engel mit ihm geredet (nun, was läßt sich dann dagegen sagen?)."
10 And a great tumult having arisen, the chiliarch, fearing lest Paul should have been torn in pieces by them, commanded the troop to come down and take him by force from the midst of them, and to bring [him] into the fortress.
Da der Oberst fürchtete, Paulus könne von den Versammelten bei dem heftigen Streit zerrissen werden, ließ er eine Abteilung Soldaten von der Burg kommen, die Paulus mit Gewalt aus ihrer Mitte führen und in das Lager bringen mußten.
11 But the following night the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good courage; for as thou hast testified the things concerning me at Jerusalem, so thou must bear witness at Rome also.
Die Nacht darauf trat der Herr zu ihm und sprach: "Sei getrost! Denn wie du in Jerusalem von mir Zeugnis abgelegt hast, so mußt du auch in Rom mein Zeuge sein."
12 And when it was day, the Jews, having banded together, put themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they should kill Paul.
Am anderen Morgen taten sich einige Juden zusammen und verpflichteten sich mit schrecklichen Eiden, sie wollten nichts essen und trinken, bis sie Paulus getötet hätten.
13 And they were more than forty who had joined together in this oath;
Ihrer waren mehr als vierzig, die sich so verschworen.
14 and they went to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have cursed ourselves with a curse to taste nothing until we kill Paul.
Diese Männer gingen zu den Hohenpriestern und Ältesten und sprachen: "Wir haben uns feierlich verschworen, nichts zu genießen, bis wir Paulus getötet haben.
15 Now therefore do ye with the council make a representation to the chiliarch so that he may bring him down to you, as about to determine more precisely what concerns him, and we, before he draws near, are ready to kill him.
Werdet ihr nun zusammen mit dem Hohen Rat bei dem Obersten vorstellig, daß er ihn zu euch führen lasse, als wolltet ihr seinen Fall noch genauer untersuchen! Dann werden wir bereitstehen und ihn töten, noch ehe er hierher kommt."
16 But Paul's sister's son, having heard of the lying in wait, came and entered into the fortress and reported [it] to Paul.
Des Paulus Schwestersohn hörte von diesem Anschlag. Er begab sich in das Lager, trat ein und teilte Paulus alles mit.
17 And Paul, having called one of the centurions, said, Take this youth to the chiliarch, for he has something to report to him.
Da ließ Paulus einen der Hauptleute rufen und sprach zu ihm: "Führe diesen Jüngling zu dem Obersten; denn er hat ihm etwas mitzuteilen."
18 He therefore, having taken him with [him], led him to the chiliarch, and says, The prisoner Paul called me to [him] and asked me to lead this youth to thee, who has something to say to thee.
Der brachte ihn zu dem Obersten und meldete: "Der Gefangene Paulus hat mich zu sich rufen lassen und mich gebeten, diesen Jüngling hier zu dir zu bringen, da er dir etwas zu sagen habe."
19 And the chiliarch having taken him by the hand, and having gone apart in private, inquired, What is it that thou hast to report to me?
Der Oberst nahm den Jüngling bei der Hand, zog ihn beiseite und fragte ihn: "Was hast du mir zu melden?"
20 And he said, The Jews have agreed together to make a request to thee, that thou mayest bring Paul down to-morrow into the council, as about to inquire something more precise concerning him.
Er antwortete: "Die Juden sind übereingekommen, dich zu bitten, Paulus morgen vor dem Hohen Rat erscheinen zu lassen, als wollte der seinen Fall noch genauer prüfen.
21 Do not thou then be persuaded by them, for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, who have put themselves under a curse neither to eat nor drink till they kill him; and now they are ready waiting the promise from thee.
Geh aber nicht darauf ein! Denn über vierzig Männer aus ihrer Mitte wollen ihm auflauern. Sie haben sich feierlich verschworen, nichts zu essen und zu trinken, bis sie ihn ermordet haben. Sie stehen jetzt schon dazu bereit und warten nur noch auf deine Zustimmung."
22 The chiliarch then dismissed the youth, commanding [him], Utter to no one that thou hast represented these things to me.
Der Oberst entließ den Jüngling und schärfte ihm ein: "Plaudere es nirgends aus, daß du mir diese Anzeige gemacht hast!"
23 And having called to [him] certain two of the centurions, he said, Prepare two hundred soldiers that they may go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred light-armed footmen, for the third hour of the night.
Dann ließ er zwei Hauptleute rufen und befahl ihnen: "Haltet von der dritten Nachtstunde an Soldaten für einen Marsch nach Cäsarea bereit, und zwar siebzig Reiter und zweihundert Lanzenträger!"
24 And [he ordered them] to provide beasts, that they might set Paul on them and carry [him] safe through to Felix the governor,
Auch stellte er Reittiere für Paulus, damit er wohlbehalten zu dem Statthalter Felix käme.
25 having written a letter, couched in this form:
Zugleich schrieb er diesem einen Brief folgenden Inhalts:
26 Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix, greeting.
"Klaudius Lysias entbietet dem hochedlen Statthalter Felix seinen Gruß.
27 This man, having been taken by the Jews, and being about to be killed by them, I came up with the military and took out [of their hands], having learned that he was a Roman.
Der Mann, den ich hier sende, ist von den Juden festgenommen worden; und gerade in dem Augenblick, wo sie ihn töten wollten, erschien ich mit meiner Truppe und entriß ihn ihren Händen, weil ich erfahren hatte, daß er ein römischer Bürger sei.
28 And desiring to know the charge on which they accused him, I brought him down to their council;
Da ich nun genau wissen wollte, was sie ihm Schuld gaben, so ließ ich ihn in ihre Ratsversammlung führen.
29 whom I found to be accused of questions of their law, but to have no charge laid against him [making him] worthy of death or of bonds.
Da fand ich denn: die Anklage gegen ihn hing mit Fragen ihres Gesetzes zusammen; doch wurde ihm nichts zur Last gelegt, was den Tod oder Gefängnis verdiente.
30 But having received information of a plot about to be put in execution against the man [by the Jews], I have immediately sent him to thee, commanding also his accusers to say before thee the things that are against him. [Farewell.]
Weil mir nun aber angezeigt worden ist, daß sie einen Anschlag gegen den Mann vorhaben, so habe ich ihn aus ihrer Mitte entfernt und sende ihn dir zu. Ich habe auch seinen Anklägern befohlen, ihre Beschuldigungen gegen ihn bei dir vorzubringen. Lebe wohl!"
31 The soldiers therefore, according to what was ordered them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris,
Die Soldaten führten den Befehl aus: sie nahmen Paulus mit sich und brachten ihn noch in derselben Nacht bis Antipatris.
32 and on the morrow, having left the horsemen to go with him, returned to the fortress.
Am nächsten Tag ließen sie die Reiter allein mit ihm weiterziehen, während sie selbst in das Lager zurückkehrten.
33 And these, having entered into Caesarea, and given up the letter to the governor, presented Paul also to him.
Die Reiter übergaben nach ihrer Ankunft in Cäsarea dem Statthalter das Schreiben und führten ihm auch Paulus vor.
34 And having read [it], and asked of what eparchy he was, and learned that [he was] of Cilicia,
Der Statthalter las das Schreiben und fragte Paulus, aus welcher Provinz er stamme. Als er hörte: "Aus Zilizien",
35 he said, I will hear thee fully when thine accusers also are arrived. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's praetorium.
sagte er: "Ich will dich genau verhören, wenn auch deine Ankläger erschienen sind." Dann befahl er, Paulus solle in dem Palast des Herodes in Haft gehalten werden.
