Acts 16
1 And he came to Derbe and Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, by name Timotheus, son of a Jewish believing woman, but [the] father a Greek,
Il y fit rencontre d'un disciple nommé Timothée, qui était fils d'une Juive fidèle, mais d'un père grec,
2 who had a [good] testimony of the brethren in Lystra and Iconium.
et qui jouissait d'un bon renom parmi les frères de Lystres et d'Icône.
3 Him would Paul have go forth with him, and took [him and] circumcised him on account of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew his father that he was a Greek.
Paul voulut remmener avec lui; il le prit et le circoncit à cause des Juifs qui étaient en ces lieux-là, car tous savaient que son père était grec.
4 And as they passed through the cities they instructed them to observe the decrees determined on by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem.
Dans les villes où ils passaient, ils enseignaient aux frères à garder les arrêtés pris par les apôtres et par les anciens de Jérusalem.
5 The assemblies therefore were confirmed in the faith, and increased in number every day.
Les églises s'affermissaient donc dans la foi, et croissaient en nombre de jour en jour.
6 And having passed through Phrygia and the Galatian country, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia,
Ils parcoururent la Phrygie et le pays de Galatie, après avoir été empêchés par le Saint-Esprit d'annoncer la Parole dans l’Asie.
7 having come down to Mysia, they attempted to go to Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them;
Arrivés près de la Mysie, ils essayèrent d'entrer en Bithynie, mais l'Esprit de Jésus ne le leur permit pas.
8 and having passed by Mysia they descended to Troas.
Alors, ayant traversé rapidement la Mysie, ils descendirent à Troas.
9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a certain Macedonian man, standing and beseeching him, and saying, Pass over into Macedonia and help us.
Là, Paul eut une vision dans la nuit: il vit un Macédonien debout, qui l'appelait, et lui disait: «Passe en Macédoine pour nous secourir.»
10 And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go forth to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to announce to them the glad tidings.
Aussitôt après cette vision, nous cherchâmes à passer en Macédoine, concluant que le Seigneur nous appelait à y porter l'évangile.
11 Having sailed therefore away from Troas, we went in a straight course to Samothracia, and on the morrow to Neapolis,
Étant donc partis de Troas, nous fîmes voile droit vers la Samothrace, et le lendemain nous débarquâmes à Néapolis.
12 and thence to Philippi, which is [the] first city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city certain days.
De là, nous allâmes à Philippes, colonie romaine, qui est la première ville du district de Macédoine. Nous nous arrêtâmes quelques jours dans cette ville.
13 And on the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where it was the custom for prayer to be, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had assembled.
Le jour du sabbat, nous nous rendîmes hors de la porte, vers une rivière, où se trouvait, selon la coutume, un lieu de prière, et nous étant assis, nous nous entretînmes avec les femmes qui s'y étaient assemblées.
14 And a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, who worshipped God, heard; whose heart the Lord opened to attend to the things spoken by Paul.
L'une d'elles écouta: c'était une marchande de pourpre, nommée Lydie, de la ville de Thyatire, femme craignant Dieu. Le Seigneur lui ouvrit le coeur pour qu'elle fût attentive aux choses que Paul disait.
15 And when she had been baptised and her house, she besought [us], saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide [there]. And she constrained us.
Lorsqu'elle eut été baptisée, ainsi que sa famille, elle nous adressa cette invitation: «Puisque vous avez jugé que j'ai foi au Seigneur, venez demeurer chez moi.» Et elle nous y contraignit.
16 And it came to pass as we were going to prayer that a certain female slave, having a spirit of Python, met us, who brought much profit to her masters by prophesying.
Un jour que nous nous acheminions vers le lieu de prière, nous rencontrâmes une servante qui avait un esprit Python, et qui, en devinant, procurait un grand profit à ses maîtres.
17 She, having followed Paul and us, cried saying, These men are bondmen of the Most High God, who announce to you [the] way of salvation.
Elle se mit à nous suivre, Paul et nous, en criant: «Ces hommes-là sont des serviteurs du Dieu Très-Haut, ils nous annoncent la voie du salut.
18 And this she did many days. And Paul, being distressed, turned, and said to the spirit, I enjoin thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out the same hour.
Elle fit cela plusieurs jours de suite, et Paul en étant fatigué, se retourna, et dit à l'esprit: «Je te commande, au nom de Jésus, de sortir de cette fille; » et il sortit à l'heure même.
19 And her masters, seeing that the hope of their gains was gone, having seized Paul and Silas, dragged [them] into the market before the magistrates;
Les maîtres de la servante, voyant que leur espérance de gain s'était évanouie, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, et les traînèrent à la place publique vers les magistrats.
20 and having brought them up to the praetors, said, These men utterly trouble our city, being Jews,
Ils les amenèrent devant les préteurs, et dirent: «Ces hommes troublent notre ville.
21 and announce customs which it is not lawful for us to receive nor practise, being Romans.
Ce sont des Juifs; ils prêchent des pratiques qu'il ne nous est pas permis à nous, Romains, d'adopter ni de suivre.»
22 And the crowd rose up too against them; and the praetors, having torn off their clothes, commanded to scourge [them].
La foule se souleva aussi contre eux, et les préteurs, leur ayant arraché leurs vêtements, ordonnèrent qu'ils fussent battus de verges.
23 And having laid many stripes upon them they cast [them] into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely;
Lorsqu'on les eut chargés de coups, ils les firent jeter en prison en commandant au geôlier de les garder sûrement.
24 who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and secured their feet to the stocks.
D'après cet ordre, le geôlier les mit dans le cachot intérieur, et fixa leurs pieds dans les ceps.
25 And at midnight Paul and Silas, in praying, were praising God with singing, and the prisoners listened to them.
Vers le milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas, s'étant mis en prière, chantaient des hymnes à Dieu; et les détenus les entendaient.
26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison shook, and all the doors were immediately opened, and the bonds of all loosed.
Tout à coup il se fit un si grand tremblement de terre, que les fondements de la prison en furent ébranlés; au même instant, toutes les portes s'ouvrirent, et les fers de tous les prisonniers tombèrent.
27 And the jailor being awakened out of his sleep, and seeing the doors of the prison opened, having drawn a sword was going to kill himself, thinking the prisoners had fled.
Le geôlier, s'étant réveillé, et voyant les portes de la prison ouvertes, crut que les détenus s'étaient enfuis; il tira une épée et allait se tuer,
28 But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm, for we are all here.
lorsque Paul lui cria d'une voix forte: «Ne te fais point de mal mous sommes tous ici.»
29 And having asked for lights, he rushed in, and, trembling, fell down before Paul and Silas.
Alors, ayant demandé de la lumière, il s'élança dans le cachot, et, tout tremblant, se jeta aux pieds de Paul et de Silas;
30 And leading them out said, Sirs, what must I do that I may be saved?
puis, les ayant fait sortir, il leur dit: «Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?»
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.
Ils lui répondirent: «Crois au Seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta famille; »
32 And they spoke to him the word of the Lord, with all that were in his house.
et ils lui annoncèrent la parole du Seigneur, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa maison.
33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed [them] from their stripes; and was baptised, he and all his straightway.
A cette même heure de la nuit, le geôlier les prit avec lui, lava leurs plaies, et, immédiatement après, il fut baptisé, lui et tous les siens.
34 And having brought them into his house he laid the table [for them], and rejoiced with all his house, having believed in God.
Après les avoir fait monter dans son logement, il leur servit à manger, heureux qu'il était d'avoir cru en Dieu avec toute sa fa- mille.
35 And when it was day, the praetors sent the lictors, saying, Let those men go.
Quand le jour fut venu, les préteurs envoyèrent dire par les licteurs: «Relâche ces gens-là.»
36 And the jailor reported these words to Paul: The praetors have sent that ye may be let go. Now therefore go out and depart in peace.
Et le geôlier annonça cette nouvelle à Paul: «Les préteurs, dit-il, ont envoyé l'ordre de vous relâcher; maintenant donc sortez, et allez en paix.»
37 But Paul said to them, Having beaten us publicly uncondemned, us who are Romans, they have cast us into prison, and now they thrust us out secretly? no, indeed, but let them come themselves and bring us out.
Mais Paul dit aux licteurs: «Quoi! après nous avoir publiquement battus de verges, sans jugement, nous qui sommes romains, ils nous ont jetés en prison, et maintenant ils nous font sortir secrètement! Non pas; mais qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes nous mettre en liberté.»
38 And the lictors reported these words to the praetors. And they were afraid when they heard they were Romans.
Les licteurs rapportèrent ces paroles aux préteurs, qui furent effrayés en apprenant que ces hommes étaient romains.
39 And they came and besought them, and having brought them out, asked them to go out of the city.
Ils vinrent leur parler, et, en les élargissant, ils les prièrent de quitter la ville.
40 And having gone out of the prison, they came to Lydia; and having seen the brethren, they exhorted them and went away.
Au sortir de la prison, les apôtres entrèrent chez Lydie, et, après avoir vu et encouragé les frères, ils partirent.
