3 John 1
1 The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
Der Älteste entbietet seinen Gruß dem lieben Gajus, den ich aufrichtig liebe.
2 Beloved, I desire that in all things thou shouldest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers.
Lieber Freund! Mein Wunsch und mein Gebet ist: wie es deiner Seele wohl geht, so möge es dir auch äußerlich und besonders in der leiblichen Gesundheit in jeder Hinsicht wohl gehen.
3 For I rejoiced exceedingly when [the] brethren came and bore testimony to thy [holding fast the] truth, even as thou walkest in truth.
Es hat mich sehr gefreut, daß Brüder gekommen sind und sich lobend darüber ausgesprochen haben, wie aufrichtig du der Wahrheit ergeben bist und wie treu du sie durch deinen Wandel bezeugst.
4 I have no greater joy than these things that I hear of my children walking in the truth.
Eine größere Freude habe ich nicht, als wenn ich höre, daß meine Kinder in der Wahrheit wandeln.
5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully [in] whatever thou mayest have wrought towards the brethren and that strangers,
Mein Lieber, du erfüllst treulich deine Pflicht an den Brüdern, sogar an solchen, die dir fremd sind.
6 (who have witnessed of thy love before [the] assembly, ) in setting forward whom on their journey worthily of God, thou wilt do well;
Diese Brüder haben deine Liebe auch vor der (hiesigen) Gemeinde rühmend anerkannt. Du tust wohl daran, wenn du sie auch jetzt wieder freundlich aufnimmst und zur Weiterreise ausrüstest, wie es sich vor Gott geziemt.
7 for for the name have they gone forth, taking nothing of those of the nations.
Denn sie sind ausgezogen, um den Namen zu verkünden, und dabei nehmen sie von den Heiden keine Unterstützung an.
8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow-workers with the truth.
Darum ist es unsere Pflicht, uns solcher Männer anzunehmen, um so an der Ausbreitung der Wahrheit mitzuwirken.
9 I wrote something to the assembly; but Diotrephes, who loves to have the first place among them, receives us not.
Ich habe der Gemeinde einige Zeilen geschrieben. Aber Diotrephes, der unter ihnen nach der ersten Stelle strebt, will von uns nichts wissen.
10 For this reason, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he does, babbling against us with wicked words; and not content with these, neither does he himself receive the brethren; and those who would he prevents, and casts [them] out of the assembly.
Bei meinem Besuch will ich deshalb sein ganzes Treiben aufdecken: wie er uns mit bösen Reden verdächtigt und, damit nicht genug, auch die Brüder nicht aufnimmt und solche, die sie aufnehmen wollen, daran hindert, ja sogar aus der Gemeinde stößt.
11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He that does good is of God. He that does evil has not seen God.
Mein Lieber, folge nicht dem bösen Beispiel, sondern dem guten! Wer Gutes tut, der ist von Gott; wer Böses tut, der hat Gott nicht gesehen.
12 Demetrius has witness borne to him by all, and by the truth itself; and we also bear witness, and thou knowest that our witness is true.
Demetrius hat von allen, ja von der Wahrheit selbst, ein gutes Zeugnis empfangen. Auch wir geben ihm ein gutes Zeugnis; und du weißt, daß unser Zeugnis wahr ist.
13 I had many things to write to thee, but I will not with ink and pen write to thee;
Ich hätte dir noch vieles mitzuteilen, aber ich mag es nicht tun mit Tinte und Feder.
14 but I hope soon to see thee, and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace [be] to thee. The friends greet thee. Greet the friends by name.
Ich hoffe, dich bald zu sehen. Dann wollen wir mündlich miteinander reden. Friede sei mit dir! Die Freunde lassen dich grüßen. Grüße jeden einzelnen unserer Freunde!
