2 Chronicles 14
1 And Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David. And Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
Et Abias mourut, et il alla rejoindre ses pères, et on l'ensevelit en la ville de David; et Asa, son fils, régna à sa place. Sous Asa, Juda fut en paix dix années.
2 And Asa did what was good and right in the sight of Jehovah his God;
Et il fit ce qui est bon et droit devant le Seigneur son Dieu.
3 and he took away the altars of the strange [gods] and the high places, and broke the columns, and cut down the Asherahs;
Il répudia les autels des dieux étrangers et les hauts lieux; il brisa les colonnes, il abattit les bois sacrés,
4 and commanded Judah to seek Jehovah the God of their fathers, and to practise the law and the commandment.
Et il dit à Juda de chercher le Seigneur Dieu de leurs pères, et de pratiquer sa loi et ses commandements.
5 And he removed out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the sun-images; and the kingdom was quiet before him.
Et il détruisit, dans toutes les villes de Juda, les autels et les idoles, et paisiblement
6 And he built fortified cities in Judah, for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because Jehovah had given him rest.
Il fortifia des places en Juda; car la terre était en paix. Il n'y eut point de guerre en ces années, parce que le Seigneur lui avait donné du repos.
7 And he said to Judah, Let us build these cities, and surround them with walls and towers, gates and bars, while the land is yet before us; for we have sought Jehovah our God; we have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side. And they built and prospered.
Et il dit à Juda: Fortifions les villes, faisons-leur des murs, des tours, des portes, des verrous; nous prévaudrons sur la terre: car de même que nous avons cherché le Seigneur notre Dieu, il nous a cherchés; il nous a donné la paix tout alentour, et il nous a fait prospérer.
8 And Asa had an army that bore targets and spears: out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bore shields and drew the bow, two hundred and eighty thousand: all these, mighty men of valour.
Or, Asa avait en la terre de Juda une force de trois cent mille hommes portant javeline et bouclier; et, en la terre de Benjamin, deux cent quatre- vingt mille archers, ou fantassins armés à la légère; tous ces hommes étaient vaillants et aguerris.
9 And Zerah the Ethiopian came out against him with a host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah.
Et Zara l'Ethiopien marcha contre eux avec une armée d'un million d'hommes, et trois cents chars; il s'avança jusqu'à Marèsa.
10 And Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.
Asa sortit à sa rencontre, et rangea son armée en bataille dans la vallée, au nord de Marèsa.
11 And Asa cried unto Jehovah his God, and said, Jehovah, it maketh no difference to thee to help, whether there be much or no power: help us, O Jehovah our God, for we rely on thee, and in thy name have we come against this multitude. Jehovah, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.
Et Asa cria au Seigneur son Dieu, et il dit: Seigneur, il ne vous est point impossible de sauver, soit avec beaucoup, soit avec peu; fortifiez-nous, Seigneur notre Dieu, car nous avons eu foi en vous, et c'est en votre nom que nous avons marché contre cette grande multitude. Seigneur notre Dieu, que l'homme ne prévaille pas contre vous.
12 And Jehovah smote the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
Et le Seigneur frappa les Ethiopiens devant Juda, et les Ethiopiens s'enfuirent.
13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them to Gerar; and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that none of them was left alive; for they were crushed before Jehovah and before his army. And they carried away very much spoil.
Asa et son peuple les poursuivirent jusqu'à Gedsor. Les Ethiopiens tombèrent jusqu'au dernier; car ils furent broyés devant le Seigneur et devant son armée, et les fils de Juda recueillirent d'innombrables dépouilles.
14 And they smote all the cities round about Gerar, for the terror of Jehovah came upon them; and they spoiled all the cities, for there was very much spoil in them.
Et ils détruisirent les bourgs autour de Gedsor; car un grand trouble, venant du Seigneur, était sur eux. Les fils de Juda pillèrent leurs villes, et ils firent un riche butin.
15 They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
Ils détruisirent les tentes des troupeaux, ils dépouillèrent les habitants de la côte, ils emmenèrent quantité de moutons et de chameaux, et ils revinrent à Jérusalem.
