2 Chronicles 13
1 In the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.
C’Est dans la dix-huitième année du règne de Jéroboam qu’Abiyya devint roi de Juda.
2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Michaiah, the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.
Il régna trois ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère se nommait Mikhayahou, fille d’Ouriêl, de Ghibea. Il y eut guerre entre Abiyya et Jéroboam.
3 And Abijah began the war with an army of men of war, four hundred thousand chosen men; and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, mighty men of valour.
Abiyya engagea la guerre avec une armée de vaillants combattants, au nombre de quatre cent mille hommes d’élite; Jéroboam lui opposa une ligne de bataille de huit cent mille hommes d’élite, guerriers vaillants.
4 And Abijah stood up on the top of mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, Jeroboam, and all Israel!
Abiyya se mit debout sur le sommet du mont Cemaraïm, qui fait partie des monts d’Ephraïm, et dit: "Ecoutez-moi, Jéroboam et tout Israël!
5 Ought ye not to know that Jehovah the God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, to him and to his sons [by] a covenant of salt?
Ne devriez-vous pas savoir que l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, a octroyé pour toujours à David la royauté sur Israël, à lui et à ses fils, en vertu d’un pacte inviolable?
6 But Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord.
Cependant Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, serviteur de Salomon, fils de David, se leva et s’insurgea contre son maître.
7 And vain men, sons of Belial, gathered to him and strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, and Rehoboam was young and faint-hearted, and did not shew himself strong against them.
Des aventuriers, des gens de rien, se groupèrent autour de lui et firent violence à Roboam, fils de Salomon, qui était alors jeune et de cœur tendre et ne sut leur tenir tête.
8 And now ye think to shew yourselves strong against the kingdom of Jehovah in the hand of the sons of David; and ye are a great multitude, and ye have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods.
Et maintenant vous prétendez l’emporter sur la royauté de l’Eternel, qui s’exerce par les mains des fils de David, et, en vérité, vous formez une grande multitude et vous avez avec vous les veaux d’or dont Jéroboam vous a fait des dieux.
9 Have ye not cast out the priests of Jehovah, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made you priests as the peoples of the lands? whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, he becomes a priest of what is not God.
Mais n’avez-vous point expulsé les prêtres du Seigneur, les fils d’Aaron et les Lévites, pour vous donner des prêtres à l’exemple des peuples des autres pays? Quiconque se présente pour se faire investir des fonctions sacerdotales, au moyen d’un jeune taureau et de sept béliers, devient prêtre d’un dieu… qui n’existe pas.
10 But as for us, Jehovah is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests that serve Jehovah are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites are at their work:
Tandis que nous, l’Eternel est notre Dieu, nous ne l’avons pas trahi. Les prêtres au service de l’Eternel sont fils d’Aaron, et les Lévites remplissent leur tâche.
11 and they burn to Jehovah every morning and every evening burnt-offerings and sweet incense; the loaves also are set in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with its lamps to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of Jehovah our God; but ye have forsaken him.
Ils font fumer chaque matin et chaque soir des holocaustes offerts à l’Eternel, l’encens aromatique; le pain de proposition est rangé sur la table pure, le chandelier d’or et ses lampes sont allumés chaque soir, car nous, nous veillons aux observances de l’Eternel, alors que vous les délaissez.
12 And behold, we have God with us at our head, and his priests, and the loud-sounding trumpets to sound an alarm against you. Children of Israel, do not fight with Jehovah the God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.
Et voyez, nous avons à notre tête Dieu et ses prêtres, et les trompettes retentissantes pour en faire éclater les fanfares contre vous. Fils d’Israël, ne combattez pas contre l’Eternel, Dieu de vos pères, car vous ne triompherez pas!"
13 But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them; and they were before Judah, and the ambush behind them.
Alors Jéroboam fit avancer les troupes placées en embuscade pour prendre ses adversaires à revers; son armée faisait face à Juda et la troupe en embuscade était derrière eux.
14 And Judah looked back, and behold, they had the battle in front and behind; and they cried to Jehovah, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
Les hommes de Juda firent volte-face; et voilà qu’ils eurent à combattre devant et derrière. Ils invoquèrent l’Eternel, et les prêtres firent retentir les trompettes.
15 And the men of Judah gave a shout; and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
En même temps, les hommes de Juda poussèrent des cris de guerre et, à la suite de ces clameurs, Dieu fit succomber Jéroboam et tout Israël devant Abiyya et Juda.
16 And the children of Israel fled before Judah; and God delivered them into their hand.
Les enfants d’Israël s’enfuirent donc devant Juda, aux mains de qui Dieu les livra.
17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; and there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.
Abiyya et son peuple leur infligèrent une grande défaite; cinq cent mille hommes d’élite tombèrent, en Israël, frappés à mort.
18 And the children of Israel were humbled at that time, and the children of Judah were strengthened, because they relied upon Jehovah the God of their fathers.
Les enfants d’Israël furent humiliés en ce temps-là, tandis que les fils de Juda furent victorieux pour s’être appuyés sur l’Eternel, Dieu de leurs pères.
19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him: Bethel with its dependent villages, and Jeshanah with its dependent villages, and Ephron with its dependent villages.
Abiyya se mit à la poursuite de Jéroboam et lui prit des villes: Beth-El et ses bourgades, Yechana et ses bourgades, Ephraïn et ses bourgades.
20 And Jeroboam did not recover strength again in the days of Abijah; and Jehovah smote him, and he died.
Jéroboam n’osa plus rien entreprendre du vivant d’Abiyya. L’Eternel le frappa, et il mourut.
21 But Abijah strengthened himself, and took fourteen wives, and begot twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
Abiyya devint puissant. Il épousa quatorze femmes et engendra vingt-deux fils et seize filles.
22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways and his sayings, are written in the treatise of the prophet Iddo.
Pour le surplus de l’histoire d’Abiyya, de ses faits et gestes, ils sont consignés dans l’exposé du prophète Iddo.
