1 Samuel 5

1 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Eben-ezer to Ashdod.

Les Philistins s’étaient donc emparés de l’arche du Seigneur, et ils la transportèrent d’Eben-Haézer à Asdod.

2 And the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

Là ils prirent l’arche du Seigneur, l’amenèrent dans le temple de Dagon et la placèrent à côté de cette idole.

3 And when they of Ashdod arose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

Mais le lendemain, lorsque les gens d’Asdod se levèrent, ils virent Dagon étendu sur la face, à terre, devant l’arche de l’Eternel; ils le relevèrent et le remirent à sa place.

4 And when they arose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the fish-stump was left to him.

Le matin du jour suivant, voilà que Dagon gisait encore à terre devant l’arche de l’Eternel; on voyait sur le seuil sa tête et ses deux mains coupées, le tronc seul était resté intact.

5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any that come into Dagon's house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

C’Est pourquoi les prêtres de Dagon ni aucun de ceux qui entrent dans le temple de ce dieu, à Asdod, n’en foulent le seuil, aujourd’hui encore.

6 And the hand of Jehovah was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he laid them waste, and smote them with hemorrhoids, — Ashdod and its borders.

Puis la main de l’Eternel s’appesantit sur les gens d’Asdod et il sévit contre eux, et il les affligea d’hémorroïdes, tant Asdod que le territoire voisin.

7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us; for his hand is severe upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

Ce que voyant, les gens d’Asdod dirent: "L’Arche du Dieu d’Israël ne peut rester au milieu de nous, car il nous fait sentir trop durement sa puissance, à nous et à notre dieu Dagon."

8 And they sent and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they said, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about to Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about [thither].

Ils mandèrent alors et convoquèrent chez eux tous les princes des Philistins, et leur dirent: "Que ferons-nous de l’arche du Dieu d’Israël?" Ceux-ci répondirent: "Que l’arche du Dieu d’Israël soit transportée à Gath!" Et l’on y transporta l’arche sainte.

9 And it came to pass that, after they had carried it about, the hand of Jehovah was against the city with very great panic; and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and hemorrhoids broke out upon them.

Mais, après sa translation, la main de l’Eternel sévit sur la ville, y produisant un très grand trouble: il en frappa tous les habitants, du plus petit au plus grand, par une éruption secrète d’hémorroïdes.

10 And they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, when the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people.

Ils envoyèrent l’arche divine à Ekron; mais quand elle y fut arrivée, les habitants jetèrent des cris et dirent: "On a transporté chez nous l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, pour nous faire périr, nous et les nôtres!"

11 And they sent and gathered all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it kill us not, and our people. For there was deadly alarm throughout the city: the hand of God was very heavy there;

Et ils envoyèrent convoquer tous les princes des Philistins et leur dirent: "Renvoyez l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, qu’elle retourne au lieu de sa résidence et ne nous fasse pas mourir, nous et les nôtres!" Car un désarroi mortel régnait dans toute la ville, la main de Dieu s’y faisait sentir lourdement.

12 and the men that died not were smitten with the hemorrhoids; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

Ceux qui ne mouraient pas étaient atteints d’hémorroïdes, et tes gémissements de la ville s’élevaient jusqu’aux cieux.
