1 Samuel 12
1 And Samuel said to all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened to your voice in all that ye said to me, and have made a king over you.
Ensuite, Samuel dit à tout Israël: Voyez, j'ai fait tout ce que vous m'avez demandé, et je vous ai donné un roi.
2 And now behold, the king walks before you; and I am old and grey-headed; and behold, my sons are with you; and I have walked before you from my youth up to this day.
Voici maintenant qu'un roi marche à votre tête; pour moi, je suis vieux et vais me tenir en repos; je laisse parmi vous mes fils, après avoir marché à votre tête depuis ma naissance jusqu'à ce jour.
3 Here I am: testify against me before Jehovah, and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I injured? or of whose hand have I received any ransom and blinded mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it to you.
Or, répondez-moi devant le Seigneur et devant son oint: A qui de vous ai- je pris un bœuf ou un âne? Qui de vous ai-je opprimé? qui ai-je violenté? de qui ai-je accepté l'offrande de quoi que ce soit, même d'une chaussure? Déclarez-le, et je restituerai.
4 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, and thou hast not injured us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand.
Et chacun dit à Samuel: Tu n'as point commis d'iniquités envers nous; tu ne nous as point opprimés, tu ne nous a point violentés, tu n'as rien pris à aucun d'entre nous.
5 And he said to them, Jehovah is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand! And [the people] said, [He is] witness!
Et Samuel dit au peuple: Le Seigneur est témoin, l'oint du Seigneur est témoin aujourd'hui que vous n'avez rien à me réclamer; et ils dirent: Témoin.
6 And Samuel said to the people, [It is] Jehovah who appointed Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
Samuel dit encore au peuple: Je prends à témoin le Seigneur qui a suscité Moïse et Aaron, qui a tiré vos pères de l'Égypte.
7 And now stand still, that I may plead with you before Jehovah of all the righteous acts of Jehovah which he did to you and to your fathers.
Maintenant, tenez-vous tranquilles; je vais vous juger devant le Seigneur, je vous dévoilerai toute la justice du Seigneur, tout ce qu'il a fait pour vous et pour vos pères.
8 When Jacob had come into Egypt, and your fathers cried to Jehovah, then Jehovah sent Moses and Aaron, and they brought your fathers forth out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.
Lorsque Jacob et ses fils se furent établis en Égypte, l'Égypte les humilia; et vos pères crièrent au Seigneur, et le Seigneur envoya Moïse avec Aaron qui conduisirent vos pères hors de l'Égypte, et les mirent en possession de cette terre promise.
9 And they forgot Jehovah their God, and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
Ensuite, vos pères méconnurent le Seigneur leur Dieu, et il les livra aux mains de Sisara, général de Jabin, roi d'Azor; puis, aux mains des Philistins; puis, aux mains du roi de Moab, et il combattit du côté de leurs ennemis.
10 And they cried to Jehovah and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken Jehovah, and have served the Baals and the Ashtoreths; and now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
Alors, ils crièrent au Seigneur; ils dirent: Nous avons péché, car nous avons abandonné le Seigneur, et nous avons servi Baal dans les bois sacrés; délivrez-nous des mains de nos ennemis, et nous vous servirons.
11 And Jehovah sent Jerubbaal and Bedan and Jephthah and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies round about, so that ye dwelt in safety.
Et le Seigneur a suscité Jérobaal, puis Barac, puis Jephté, puis Samuel; il vous a délivrés des mains des ennemis qui vous entourent, et vous avez habité en paix vos maisons.
12 But when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said to me, Nay, but a king shall reign over us; when Jehovah your God was your king.
Et, vous avez vu récemment que Naas, roi des fils d'Ammon, marchait contre vous, et vous avez dit: Nous le voulons, il faut qu'un roi règne sur nous. Et cependant, le Seigneur notre Dieu était notre roi!
13 And now behold, the king whom ye have chosen, whom ye have asked for! and behold, Jehovah has set a king over you.
Or maintenant, voici le roi que vous avez élu; vous voyez que le Seigneur vous a donné un roi, et vous prospèrerez,
14 If ye fear Jehovah, and serve him, and hearken to his voice, and rebel not against the commandment of Jehovah, then both ye and the king also that reigns over you shall continue following Jehovah your God.
Si vous craignez le Seigneur, si vous le servez, si vous êtes dociles à sa voix, si vous ne résistez point à ses paroles, si vous et votre roi vous marchez avec le Seigneur.
15 But if ye will not hearken to the voice of Jehovah, and if ye rebel against the commandment of Jehovah, then will the hand of Jehovah be against you, as against your fathers.
Mais si vous êtes indociles à la voix du Seigneur, si vous résistez à ses paroles, la main du Seigneur s'appesantira sur vous et sur votre roi.
16 Now therefore stand and see this great thing which Jehovah will do before your eyes.
Maintenant retirez-vous tranquilles, et vous verrez le grand prodige que le Seigneur va faire éclater à vos yeux.
17 Is it not wheat-harvest to-day? I will call unto Jehovah, and he will send thunder and rain; and ye shall perceive and see that your wickedness is great which ye have done in the sight of Jehovah in asking for yourselves a king.
N'est-ce pas aujourd'hui la moisson du froment? Je vais invoquer le Seigneur; il vous enverra le tonnerre et la pluie, et vous reconnaîtrez et vous verrez combien a été grande votre méchanceté devant le Seigneur, quand vous avez demandé pour vous un roi.
18 And Samuel called to Jehovah; and Jehovah sent thunder and rain that day. And all the people greatly feared Jehovah and Samuel.
Samuel invoqua donc le Seigneur, et, en ce jour-là, le Seigneur envoya le tonnerre et la pluie. Alors, tout le peuple eut une grande crainte du Seigneur et de Samuel.
19 And all the people said to Samuel, Pray to Jehovah thy God for thy servants, that we die not; for we have added to all our sins the wickedness to ask for ourselves a king.
Et tout le peuple dit à Samuel: Prie le Seigneur ton Dieu pour tes serviteurs, afin que nous ne mourions pas, parce qu'à nos péchés nous avons ajouté la faute de demander pour nous un roi.
20 And Samuel said to the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness; yet turn not aside from following Jehovah, and serve Jehovah with all your heart;
Et Samuel dit au peuple: N'ayez point de crainte; vous avez commis réellement tous cette faute; mais ne vous écartez pas des voies du Seigneur, servez-le de tout votre cœur;
21 and turn ye not aside; for [it would be] after vain things which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.
Ne vous laissez pas égarer par des dieux qui n'existent point, qui ne peuvent rien, qui ne délivrent personne, puisqu'ils ne sont que néant.
22 For Jehovah will not cast away his people for his great name's sake; because it has pleased Jehovah to make you his people.
Tandis que le Seigneur, à cause de son grand nom, ne répudiera pas son peuple, car le Seigneur vous a visiblement choisis pour être son peuple.
23 Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against Jehovah in ceasing to pray for you; and I will teach you the good and right way.
Pour moi, je me garderai de pécher contre le Seigneur, et de cesser de prier pour vous. Je servirai le Seigneur, et je vous montrerai la voie bonne et droite.
24 Only, fear Jehovah, and serve him in truth, with all your heart; for see how great things he has done for you.
Mais craignez le Seigneur, servez-le dans la vérité et de tout votre cœur, puisque vous avez vu les grandes choses qu'il a faites parmi vous.
25 But if ye do wickedly, ye shall perish, both ye and your king.
Et si vous retombez dans le péché, vous périrez vous et votre roi.
