Job 28
1 Silver has its fissures where it is first found, and gold has a place where it is melted.
しろがねには掘り出す穴があり、精錬するこがねには出どころがある。
2 Iron is taken from the earth, and ore, unbound by heat, is turned into brass.
くろがねは土から取り、あかがねは石から溶かして取る。
3 He has established a time for darkness, and he has settled on an end for all things, as well as for the stone that is in the gloom and shadow of death.
人は暗やみを破り、いやはてまでも尋ねきわめて、暗やみおよび暗黒の中から鉱石を取る。
4 The burning separates a pilgrim people from those who have been forgotten by the feet of the destitute man and from the unapproachable.
彼らは人の住む所を離れて縦穴をうがち、道行く人に忘れられ、人を離れて身をつりさげ、揺れ動く。
5 The land, where bread appeared in its place, has been destroyed by fire.
地はそこから食物を出す。その下は火でくつがえされるようにくつがえる。
6 Its stones are embedded with sapphires, and its soil, with gold.
その石はサファイヤのある所、そこにはまた金塊がある。
7 The bird does not know its path, nor has the eye of the vulture beheld it.
その道は猛禽も知らず、たかの目もこれを見ず、
8 The sons of merchants have not walked there, nor has the lioness traveled through it.
猛獣もこれを踏まず、ししもこれを通らなかった。
9 He has stretched out his hand to the rocks; he has overturned the foundations of the mountains.
人は堅い岩に手をくだして、山を根元からくつがえす。
10 He has cut rivers through the rocks, and his eye has seen all precious things.
彼は岩に坑道を掘り、その目はもろもろの尊い物を見る。
11 The depths of rivers he has also examined, and he has brought hidden things into the light.
彼は水路をふさいで、漏れないようにし、隠れた物を光に取り出す。
12 But, in truth, where is wisdom to be found, and where is the place of understanding?
しかし知恵はどこに見いだされるか。悟りのある所はどこか。
13 Man does not know its price, nor is it found in the land of those who live in sweetness.
人はそこに至る道を知らない、また生ける者の地でそれを獲ることができない。
14 The abyss declares, “It is not in me.” And the sea says, “It is not with me.”
淵は言う、『それはわたしのうちにない』と。また海は言う、『わたしのもとにない』と。
15 The finest gold will not be paid for it, nor will silver be weighed in exchange for it.
精金もこれと換えることはできない。銀も量ってその価とすることはできない。
16 It will not be compared with the dyed colors of India, nor with the very costly stone sardonyx, nor with the sapphire.
オフルの金をもってしても、その価を量ることはできない。尊い縞めのうも、サファイヤも同様である。
17 Neither gold nor crystal will be its equal; neither will vessels of gold be fitted for it.
こがねも、玻璃もこれに並ぶことができない。また精金の器物もこれと換えることができない。
18 The exalted and the eminent will not be remembered in comparison with it. Yet wisdom is drawn out of concealment.
さんごも水晶も言うに足りない。知恵を得るのは真珠を得るのにまさる。
19 The topaz of Ethiopia will not be equal to it, nor will it be compared to the purest dyes.
エチオピヤのトパズもこれに並ぶことができない。純金をもってしても、その価を量ることはできない。
20 So then, where does wisdom begin, and where is the place of understanding?
それでは知恵はどこから来るか。悟りのある所はどこか。
21 It has been hidden from the eyes of all living things, just as the birds of the heavens escape notice.
これはすべての生き物の目に隠され、空の鳥にも隠されている。
22 Perdition and death have said, “With our ears, we have heard its fame.”
滅びも死も言う、『われわれはそのうわさを耳に聞いただけだ』。
23 God understands its way, and he knows its location.
神はこれに至る道を悟っておられる、彼はそのある所を知っておられる。
24 For he beholds the limits of the world, and he looks upon all things that are under heaven.
彼は地の果までもみそなわし、天が下を見きわめられるからだ。
25 He created a counterweight for the winds, and he suspended the waters to measure them.
彼が風に重さを与え、水をますで量られたとき、
26 At that time, he gave a law to the rain and a path to the resounding storms.
彼が雨のために規定を設け、雷のひらめきのために道を設けられたとき、
27 Then he saw and explained it, and he made ready and examined it.
彼は知恵を見て、これをあらわし、これを確かめ、これをきわめられた。
28 And he said to man, “Behold the fear of the Lord. Such is wisdom. And to withdraw from evil, this is understanding.”
そして人に言われた、『見よ、主を恐れることは知恵である、悪を離れることは悟りである』と」。
