Genesis 42
1 Then Jacob, hearing that food was being sold in Egypt, said to his sons: “Why are you negligent?
Da aber Jakob sah, daß Getreide in Ägypten feil war, sprach er zu seinen Söhnen: Was sehet ihr euch lange um?
2 I have heard that wheat is being sold in Egypt. Go down and buy necessities for us, so that we may be able to live, and not be consumed by destitution.”
Siehe, ich höre, es sei in Ägypten Getreide feil; ziehet hinab und kaufet uns Getreide, daß wir leben und nicht sterben.
3 And so, when ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain in Egypt,
Also zogen hinab zehn Brüder Josephs, daß sie in Ägypten Getreide kauften.
4 Benjamin was kept at home by Jacob, who said to his brothers, “Lest perhaps he may suffer harm on the journey.”
Aber Benjamin, Josephs Bruder, ließ Jakob nicht mit seinen Brüdern ziehen; denn er sprach: Es möchte ihm ein Unfall begegnen.
5 And they entered into the land of Egypt with the others who traveled to buy. For the famine was in the land of Canaan.
Also kamen die Kinder Israels, Getreide zu kaufen, samt andern, die mit ihnen zogen, denn es war im Lande Kanaan auch teuer.
6 And Joseph was governor in the land of Egypt, and grain was sold under his direction to the people. And when his brothers had reverenced him
Aber Joseph war der Regent im Lande und verkaufte Getreide allem Volk im Lande. Da nun seine Brüder zu ihm kamen, fielen sie vor ihm nieder zur Erde auf ihr Antlitz.
7 and he had recognized them, he spoke harshly, as if to foreigners, questioning them: “Where did you come from?” And they responded, “From the land of Canaan, to buy necessary provisions.”
Und er sah sie an und kannte sie; und stellete sich fremd gegen sie und redete hart mit ihnen und sprach zu ihnen: Woher kommt ihr? Sie sprachen: Aus dem Lande Kanaan, Speise zu kaufen.
8 And although he knew his brothers, he was not known by them.
Aber wiewohl er sie kannte, kannten sie ihn doch nicht.
9 And remembering the dreams, which he had seen in another time, he said to them: “You are scouts. You have come in order to see which parts of the land are weaker.”
Und Joseph gedachte an die Träume, die ihm von ihnen geträumet hatten, und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr, seid Kundschafter und seid kommen zu sehen, wo das Land offen ist.
10 And they said: “It is not so, my lord. But your servants have arrived in order to buy food.
Sie antworteten ihm: Nein, mein HERR; deine Knechte sind kommen, Speise zu kaufen.
11 We are all sons of one man. We have come in peace, nor do any of your subjects devise evil.”
Wir sind alle eines Mannes Söhne; wir sind redlich; und deine Knechte sind nie Kundschafter gewesen.
12 And he answered them: “It is otherwise. You have come to examine the unguarded parts of this land.”
Er sprach zu ihnen: Nein, sondern ihr seid kommen zu besehen, wo das Land offen ist.
13 But they said: “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The youngest is with our father; the other is not living.”
Sie antworteten ihm: Wir, deine Knechte, sind zwölf Brüder, eines Mannes Söhne im Lande Kanaan, und der jüngste ist noch bei unserm Vater; aber der eine ist nicht mehr vorhanden.
14 He said: “This is just as I have said. You are scouts.
Joseph sprach zu ihnen: Das ist's, das ich euch gesagt habe: Kundschafter seid ihr.
15 I will now continue to put you to the test. By the health of Pharaoh, you will not depart from here, until your youngest brother arrives.
Daran will ich euch prüfen: bei dem Leben Pharaos, ihr sollt nicht von dannen kommen, es komme denn her euer jüngster Bruder.
16 Send one of you and bring him. But you will be in chains, until what you have said is proven to be either true or false. Otherwise, by the health of Pharaoh, you are scouts.”
Sendet einen unter euch hin, der euren Bruder hole; ihr aber sollt gefangen sein. Also will ich prüfen eure Rede, ob ihr mit Wahrheit umgehet oder nicht. Denn wo nicht, so seid ihr, bei dem Leben Pharaos, Kundschafter.
17 Therefore, he delivered them into custody for three days.
Und ließ sie beisammen verwahren drei Tage lang.
18 Then, on the third day, he brought them out of prison, and he said: “Do as I have said, and you will live. For I fear God.
Am dritten Tage aber sprach er zu ihnen: Wollt ihr leben, so tut also; denn ich fürchte Gott.
19 If you are peaceful, let one of your brothers be bound in prison. Then you may go away and carry the grain that you have bought to your houses.
Seid ihr redlich, so lasset eurer Brüder einen gebunden liegen in eurem Gefängnis; ihr aber ziehet hin und bringet heim, was ihr gekauft habt für den Hunger,
20 And bring your youngest brother to me, so that I may be able to test your words, and you may not die.” They did as he had said,
und bringet euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir, so will ich euren Worten glauben, daß ihr nicht sterben müsset. Und sie taten also.
21 and they spoke to one another: “We deserve to suffer these things, because we have sinned against our brother, seeing the anguish of his soul, when he begged us and we would not listen. For that reason, this tribulation has come upon us.”
Sie aber sprachen untereinander: Das haben wir an unserm Bruder verschuldet, daß wir sahen die Angst seiner Seele, da er uns flehete, und wir wollten ihn nicht erhören; darum kommt nun diese Trübsal über uns.
22 And Reuben, one of them, said: “Did not I say to you, ‘Do not sin against the boy,’ and you would not listen to me? See, his blood is exacted.”
Ruben antwortete ihnen und sprach: Sagt' ich's euch nicht, da ich sprach: Versündiget euch nicht an dem Knaben, und ihr wolltet nicht hören? Nun wird sein Blut gefordert.
23 But they did not know that Joseph understood, because he was speaking to them through an interpreter.
Sie wußten aber nicht, daß es Joseph verstund; denn er redete mit ihnen durch einen Dolmetscher.
24 And he turned himself away briefly and wept. And returning, he spoke to them.
Und er wandte sich von ihnen und weinete. Da er nun sich wieder zu ihnen wandte und mit ihnen redete, nahm er aus ihnen Simeon und band ihn vor ihren Augen;
25 And taking Simeon, and binding him in their presence, he ordered his ministers to fill their sacks with wheat, and to replace each one’s money in their sacks, and to give them, in addition, provisions for the way. And they did so.
Und Joseph tat Befehl, daß man ihre Säcke mit Getreide füllete und ihr Geld wiedergäbe, einem jeglichen in seinen Sack, dazu auch Zehrung auf den Weg. Und man tat ihnen also.
26 Then, having loaded their donkeys with the grain, they set out.
Und sie luden ihre Ware auf ihre Esel und zogen von dannen.
27 And one of them, opening a sack to give his beast of burden fodder at the inn, looked upon the money at the sack’s mouth,
Da aber einer seinen Sack auftat, daß er seinem Esel Futter gäbe in der Herberge, ward er gewahr seines Geldes, das oben im Sacke lag.
28 and he said to his brothers: “My money has returned to me. See, it is held in the sack.” And they were astonished and troubled, and they said to one another, “What is this that God has done to us?”
Und sprach zu seinen Brüdern: Mein Geld ist mir wieder worden; siehe, in meinem Sack ist es. Da entfiel ihnen ihr Herz und erschraken untereinander und sprachen: Warum hat uns Gott das getan?
29 And they went to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, and they explained to him all the things that had befallen them, saying:
Da sie nun heimkamen zu ihrem Vater Jakob ins Land Kanaan, sagten sie ihm alles, was ihnen begegnet war, und sprachen:
30 “The lord of the land spoke harshly to us, and he considered us to be scouts of the province.
Der Mann, der im Lande HERR ist, redete hart mit uns und hielt uns für Kundschafter des Landes.
31 And we answered him: ‘We are peaceful, and we do not intend any treachery.
Und da wir ihm antworteten: Wir sind redlich und nie Kundschafter gewesen,
32 We are twelve brothers conceived of one father. One is not living; the youngest is with our father in the land of Canaan.’
sondern zwölf Brüder, unsers Vaters Söhne; einer ist nicht mehr vorhanden, und der jüngste ist noch bei unserm Vater im Lande Kanaan:
33 And he said to us: ‘Thus will I prove that you are peaceful. Release one of your brothers to me, and take necessary provisions for your houses, and go away,
sprach der HERR im Lande zu uns: Daran will ich merken, ob ihr redlich seid: einen eurer Brüder lasset bei mir und nehmet die Notdurft für euer Haus und ziehet hin;
34 and bring your youngest brother to me, so that I may know that you are not scouts. And this one, who is held in chains, you may be able to receive again. And thereafter, you shall have permission to buy what you want.’”
und bringet euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir, so merke ich, daß ihr nicht Kundschafter, sondern redlich seid; so will ich euch auch euren Bruder geben, und möget im Lande werben.
35 Having said this, when they poured out their grain, each found his money tied to the mouth of his sack. And all were terrified together.
Und da sie die Säcke ausschütteten, fand ein jeglicher sein Bündlein Geld in seinem Sacke. Und da sie sahen, daß es Bündlein ihres Geldes waren, erschraken sie samt ihrem Vater.
36 Their father Jacob said, “You have caused me to be without children. Joseph is not living, Simeon is held in chains, and Benjamin you would carry away. All these evils have fallen back upon me.”
Da sprach Jakob, ihr Vater, zu ihnen: Ihr beraubet mich meiner Kinder: Joseph ist nicht mehr vorhanden, Simeon ist nicht mehr vorhanden, Benjamin wollt ihr hinnehmen; es gehet alles über mich.
37 And Reuben answered him, “Put my two sons to death, if I do not lead him back to you. Deliver him into my hand, and I will restore him to you.”
Ruben antwortete seinem Vater und sprach: Wenn ich dir ihn nicht wiederbringe, so erwürge meine zween Söhne; gib ihn nur in meine Hand, ich will ihn dir wiederbringen.
38 But he said: “My son will not go down with you. His brother is dead, and he is left alone. If any adversity will befall him in the land to which you travel, you would lead my grey hairs down with sorrow to the grave.” (Sheol h7585)
Er sprach: Mein Sohn soll nicht mit euch hinabziehen, denn sein Bruder ist tot, und er ist allein überblieben; wenn ihm ein Unfall auf dem Wege begegnete, da ihr auf reiset, würdet ihr meine grauen Haare mit Herzeleid in die Grube bringen. (Sheol h7585)
