Genesis 31
1 But afterwards, he heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, “Jacob has taken all that was our father’s, and being enlarged by his ability, he has become famous.”
Cependant, Jacob entendit les fils de Laban se dire entre eux: Jacob a pris tous les biens de notre père; c'est des biens de notre père qu'il s'est fait cette gloire où nous le voyons.
2 Likewise, he observed that Laban’s face was not the same toward him as it was yesterday and the day before.
Et Jacob regarda la face de Laban, et il vit qu'elle n'était pas pour lui comme la veille et l'avant-veille.
3 Most importantly, the Lord was saying to him, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your generation, and I will be with you.”
Le Seigneur lui-même dit à Jacob: Retourne au pays de ton père, dans ta famille; je serai avec toi.
4 He sent and called for Rachel and Leah, in the field where he pastured the flocks,
Aussitôt, Jacob envoya chercher Lia et Rachel dans la plaine où étaient les troupeaux,
5 and he said to them: “I see that your father’s face is not the same toward me as it was yesterday and the day before. But the God of my father has been with me.
Et il leur dit: Je vois que la face de votre père n'est pour moi ni comme hier, ni comme le jour précédent; cependant le Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.
6 And you know that I have served your father with all my strength.
Vous savez vous-mêmes que j'ai servi votre père de toutes mes forces.
7 Even so, your father has circumvented me, and he has changed my wages ten times. And yet God has not permitted him to harm me.
Néanmoins, il m'a trompé, et pendant dix portées d'agneaux, il a changé ma récompense, mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de me faire tort.
8 Whenever he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ all the sheep gave birth to speckled newborns. Yet truly, when he said the contrary, ‘You will take whatever is white for your wages,’ all the flocks gave birth to white ones.
S'il disait: Les bigarrés seront ta récompense, toutes les brebis produisaient des rejetons bigarrés, s'il disait, au contraire; Les blancs seront ton salaire, toutes les brebis produisaient des rejetons blancs.
9 And it is God who has taken your father’s substance and given it to me.
Le Seigneur a enlevé ainsi tout le bétail de votre père, pour me le donner.
10 For after the time had arrived for the ewes to conceive, I lifted up my eyes, and I saw in my sleep that the males climbing on the females were of variegated, and spotted, and diverse colors.
Voici ce qui est arrivé: Lorsque les mères concevaient, j'eus pendant mon sommeil une vision; je vis que les béliers et les boucs couvrant les brebis et les chèvres étaient blancs-mêlés, bigarrés et cendrés.
11 And the Angel of God said to me in my sleep, ‘Jacob.’ And I responded, ‘Here I am.’
Et, pendant mon sommeil, l'ange du Seigneur m'a dit: Jacob; et j'ai répondu: Qu'y a-t-il?
12 And he said: ‘Lift up your eyes, and see that all the males climbing on the females are variegated, spotted, and also speckled. For I have seen all that Laban has done to you.
L'ange m'a dit: Lève les yeux, vois les boucs et les béliers couvrant les chèvres et les brebis; ils sont blancs-mêlés, bigarrés et cendrés. J'ai vu tout ce que te fait Laban.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the stone and made a vow to me. Now therefore arise, and depart from this land, returning to the land of your nativity.’”
Je suis le Dieu qui t'apparus en la demeure de Dieu, où tu as oint pour moi une colonne, et où tu m'as fait un vœu. Maintenant donc, lève-toi et pars de cette terre; retourne au pays où tu es né, et je serai avec toi.
14 And Rachel and Leah responded: “Have we anything left behind among the resources and inheritance of our father’s house?
Rachel et Lia lui dirent: Est-ce que nous avons encore une part ou un héritage en la maison de notre père?
15 Has he not considered us as foreigners, and sold us, and consumed our price?
Ne nous a-t-il pas traitées en étrangères? Il nous a vendues, et il a dévoré avec avidité l'argent qu'il avait retiré de nous.
16 But God has taken our father’s riches and handed these to us and to our sons. Therefore, do all that God has instructed you.”
Que toute la richesse, toute la gloire que Dieu a enlevées à notre père, soient à nous et à nos enfants; maintenant donc fais tout ce que Dieu t'a dit.
17 And so Jacob rose up, and having placed the children and his wives upon camels, he went forth.
Et Jacob, s'étant levé, prit sur des chamelles ses femmes et ses enfants.
18 And he took all his substance and flocks, and whatever he had acquired in Mesopotamia, and he journeyed to his father Isaac, in the land of Canaan.
Il emmena tout ce qui lui appartenait, tant ce qu'il avait acquis en Mésopotamie, que ce qui lui était propre, pour retourner auprès de son père Isaac, en la terre de Chanaan.
19 At that time, Laban had gone to shear the sheep, and so Rachel stole her father’s idols.
Cependant, Laban était allé tondre ses brebis, et Rachel déroba les idoles de son père.
20 And Jacob was not willing to confess to his father-in-law that he was fleeing.
Jacob se cacha de Laban le Syrien, ne lui faisant point savoir qu'il s'enfuyait.
21 And when he had gone away with all such things that were justly his, and, having crossed the river, was continuing on toward Mount Gilead,
Il s'en alla rapidement avec ce qui lui appartenait, traversa l'Euphrate, et hâta sa marche vers la montagne de Galaad.
22 it was reported to Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled.
Le troisième jour, on apprit à Laban le Syrien que Jacob s'était enfui.
23 And taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days. And he overtook him at Mount Gilead.
Aussitôt, prenant avec lui ses frères, il se mit à sa poursuite, et, au bout de sept jours, il l'atteignit en la montagne de Galaad.
24 And he saw in a dream, God saying to him, “Beware that you not speak anything harsh against Jacob.”
Or, Dieu vint vers Laban le Syrien la nuit, pendant son sommeil, et il lui dit: Garde-toi de parler méchamment à Jacob.
25 And now Jacob had pitched his tent at the mountain. And when he, with his brothers, had overtaken him, he set his tent at the same place at Mount Gilead.
Bientôt Laban eut atteint Jacob, qui avait dressé ses tentes sur la montagne; Laban fit arrêter ses frères sur les monts de Galaad.
26 And he said to Jacob: “Why have you acted this way, departing from me in secret, with my daughters like captives of the sword?
Qu'as-tu fait? dit-il à Jacob; pourquoi as-tu fui secrètement? pourquoi m'as-tu volé et m'as-tu emmené mes filles comme des captives conquises par le glaive?
27 Why would you want to flee without my knowledge and without telling me, though I might have led you forward with gladness, and songs, and timbrels, and lyres?
Si tu m'avais averti, je t'aurais reconduit joyeusement avec des musiciens, au son des tambours et des cithares.
28 You have not permitted me to kiss my sons and daughters. You have acted foolishly. And now, indeed,
Mais je n'ai pas été jugé digne d'embrasser mes petits-enfants et mes filles; tu as bien agi en insensé.
29 my hand has power to repay you with harm. But the God of your father said to me yesterday, ‘Beware that you not speak anything stern against Jacob.’
Mon bras est assez fort pour te maltraiter; mais le Dieu de ton père m'a parlé cette nuit, disant: Garde-toi de parler méchamment à Jacob.
30 It may be that you desired to go to your own, and that you longed for the house of your father. But why have you stolen my gods?”
Pars donc, puisque tu désires si ardemment retourner dans la maison de ton père; mais pourquoi as-tu dérobé mes dieux?
31 Jacob answered: “I set out, unknown to you, because I feared that you might take away your daughters by violence.
Jacob répondit à Laban: J'avais crainte, et je me disais: Qu'il n'aille point m'enlever ses filles et tout ce qui m'appartient.
32 But, since you accuse me of theft, with whomever you will find your gods, let him be slain in the sight of our brothers. Search; anything of yours that you will find with me, take it away.” Now when he said this, he did not know that Rachel had stolen the idols.
Jacob ajouta: Celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux, qu'il ne vive point parmi nos frères; reconnais chez moi ce qui t'appartient et prends-le. Or, il ne croyait pas qu'il y eût rien chez lui, car il ignorait que Rachel sa femme eût dérobé les idoles.
33 And so Laban, entering the tent of Jacob, and of Leah, and of both the handmaids, did not find them. And when he had entered the tent of Rachel,
Étant entré dans la demeure de Lia, Laban chercha et ne trouva rien. Il sortit de la demeure de Lia, chercha dans celle de Jacob, puis dans la demeure des deux servantes, et il ne trouva rien; il entra aussi en la demeure de Rachel.
34 she quickly hid the idols under the camel’s bedding, and she sat upon them. And when he had searched the entire tent and found nothing,
Or, Rachel avait pris les idoles, et les ayant cachées dans le bât de sa chamelle, elle s'était assise par-dessus.
35 she said: “Do not be angry, my lord, that I am unable to rise up in your sight, because it has now happened to me according to the custom of women.” So his careful search was thwarted.
Elle dit à son père: Ne t'indigne pas, seigneur; je ne puis me lever devant toi, il m'est advenu ce qui arrive aux femmes. Et Laban chercha dans toute la demeure, et il ne trouva pas les idoles.
36 And Jacob, being inflated, said with contention: “For which fault of mine, or for what sin of mine, have you become so enraged against me
Jacob alors s'indigna, éclata en reproches contre Laban, et il se mit à lui dire: Quelle est mon iniquité, quel est mon crime, pour que tu m'aies poursuivi,
37 and searched all the items of my house? What have you found from all the substance of your house? Place it here before my brothers, and your brothers, and let them judge between me and you.
Et pour que tu aies fouillé tous les meubles de ma demeure? Qu'as-tu trouvé des choses de ta maison? Mets-le donc là devant tes frères et devant mes frères, qu'ils jugent entre nous deux.
38 For what reason have I been with you for twenty years? Your ewes and she-goats were not barren; the rams of your flocks I did not consume.
J'ai passé avec toi vingt de mes années; tes brebis et tes chèvres n'ont jamais été stériles; jamais je n'ai mangé des béliers de tes troupeaux.
39 Neither did I reveal to you what was seized by the wild beast. I replaced all that was damaged. Whatever was lost by theft, you collected it from me.
Je ne t'ai point compté ce qu'ont pris les bêtes fauves, et j'ai payé du mien les rapts de jour et les rapts de nuit,
40 Day and night, I was burned by heat and by frost, and sleep fled from my eyes.
J'ai été brûlé par la chaleur des jours, glacé par la froidure des nuits; le sommeil avait fui de mes yeux.
41 And in this way, for twenty years, I have served you in your house: fourteen for your daughters, and six for your flocks. You have also changed my wages ten times.
Voilà vingt ans que je suis dans ta maison; je t'ai servi quatorze années pour prix de tes deux filles, et six pour tes menus troupeaux, et toi tu as changé ma récompense durant dix portées d'agneaux.
42 If the God of my father Abraham and the fear of Isaac had not been close to me, perhaps by now you would have sent me away naked. But God looked kindly on my affliction and the labor of my hands, and he rebuked you yesterday.”
Si le Dieu de mon père Abraham et la crainte d'Isaac n'étaient pas de mon côté, tu m'eusses renvoyé les mains vides; Dieu a vu mon humiliation et la fatigue de mes bras, et il t'a fait hier ses reproches.
43 Laban answered him: “My daughters and sons, and your flocks, and all that you discern are mine. What can I do to my sons and grandchildren?
Laban répondit à Jacob: Tes filles sont mes filles et tes fils sont mes fils, ce bétail est mon bétail, tout ce que tu vois est à moi et à mes filles. Comment pourrai-je leur nuire à elles et à leurs enfants?
44 Come, therefore, let us enter into a pact, so that it may be a testimony between me and you.”
Viens donc, je veux faire une alliance qui soit un témoignage entre moi et toi. Et il lui dit: Il n'y a personne avec nous; que Dieu soit témoin entre nous.
45 And so Jacob took a stone, and he set it up as a memorial.
Jacob, ayant pris une pierre, et l'ayant dressée en forme de colonne,
46 And he said to his brothers, “Bring stones.” And they, gathering together stones, made a tomb, and they ate upon it.
Dit à ses frères: Rassemblez des pierres. Et ils rassemblèrent des pierres dont ils firent un autel, sur lequel ils mangèrent; et Laban dit à Jacob: Cet autel est témoin aujourd'hui entre toi et moi.
47 And Laban called it, ‘Tomb of Witness,’ and Jacob, ‘Pile of Testimony;’ each of them according to the fitness of his own language.
Laban l'appela l'autel du témoignage, et Jacob l'autel du témoin.
48 And Laban said: “This tomb will be a witness between me and you this day.” (And for this reason, its name has been called Gilead, that is, ‘Tomb of Witness.’)
Et Laban dit à Jacob: Voilà l'autel et la colonne que j'ai élevés entre moi et toi; cet autel est témoin, cette colonne porte témoignage. C'est pourquoi l'autel fut appelé: l'Autel porte témoignage (Galaad),
49 “May the Lord consider and judge between us, when we will have withdrawn from one another.
Et: La vision qui a été vue; que Dieu regarde entre nous deux, puisque nous allons nous séparer.
50 If you afflict my daughters, and if you bring in other wives over them, no one is a witness of our words except God, who understands beforehand.”
Si tu humilies mes filles; si avec elles tu prends d'autres femmes, fais attention: personne ne nous voit et n'est avec nous, [mais Dieu est témoin entre moi et toi].
51 And again he said to Jacob. “Lo, this tomb and the stone that I have set up between me and you,
52 will be a witness. This tomb,” I say, “and the stone, they are for testimony, in case either I cross beyond it going toward you, or you cross beyond it thinking to harm me.
Si jamais je franchis de ton côté ou si tu franchis du mien cet autel et cette colonne dans de mauvais desseins,
53 May the God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” Therefore, Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.
Que le Dieu d'Abraham et le Dieu de Nachor juge entre nous. Et Jacob jura par l'objet de la crainte d'Isaac son père.
54 And after he had immolated sacrifices on the mountain, he called his brothers to eat bread. And when they had eaten, they lodged there.
Il offrit un sacrifice sur la montagne, et convoqua ses frères; ils mangèrent, et ils burent, et ils dormirent sur la montagne.
55 In truth, Laban rose up in the night, and he kissed his sons and daughters, and he blessed them. And he returned to his place.
Ensuite, Laban se leva de grand matin, embrassa ses fils et ses filles, les bénit, et, s'étant retourné, il s'en fut en son pas.
