Genesis 15
1 And so, these things having been transacted, the word of the Lord came to Abram by a vision, saying: “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your protector, and your reward is exceedingly great.”
Na deze gebeurtenissen werd in een gezicht het woord van Jahweh gericht tot Abram: Vrees niet Abram: Ik ben u tot schild; Overgroot zal uw loon zijn!
2 And Abram said: “Lord God, what will you give to me? I may go without children. And the son of the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus.”
Toen zei Abram: Jahweh, mijn Heer, wat kunt Gij me geven? Kinderloos ga ik heen, en Eliézer uit Damascus zal de bezitter zijn van mijn huis.
3 And Abram added: “Yet to me you have not given offspring. And behold, my servant born in my house will be my heir.”
En Abram ging voort: Zie, Gij hebt mij geen nazaat gegeven, en een mijner onderhorigen zal mijn erfgenaam zijn.
4 And immediately the word of the Lord came to him, saying: “This one will not be your heir. But he who will come from your loins, the same will you have for your heir.”
Weer werd het woord van Jahweh tot hem gericht: Deze zal uw erfgenaam niet zijn; maar die uit uw eigen lichaam wordt geboren, zal uw erfgenaam zijn.
5 And he brought him outside, and he said to him, “Take in the heavens, and number the stars, if you can.” And he said to him, “So also will your offspring be.”
Hij voerde hem naar buiten, en sprak: Zie op naar de hemel en tel de sterren, als ge dat kunt: zó talrijk zal uw nageslacht zijn, zeide Hij hem.
6 Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.
Hij geloofde in Jahweh, en Deze rekende het hem tot gerechtigheid aan.
7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who led you away from Ur of the Chaldeans, so as to give you this land, and so that you would possess it.”
Daarop sprak Hij tot hem: Ik ben Jahweh, die u uit Oer der Chaldeën heb geleid, om u dit land in eigendom te geven.
8 But he said, “Lord God, in what way may I be able to know that I will possess it?”
Hij antwoordde: Jahweh, mijn Heer, waaraan zal ik erkennen, dat ik het eens zal bezitten?
9 And the Lord responded by saying: “Take for me a cow of three years, and a she-goat of three years, and a ram of three years, also a turtle-dove and a pigeon.”
Hij zeide: Breng Mij een driejarige koe en een driejarigen bok en een driejarigen ram, met een tortel en een jonge duif.
10 Taking all these, he divided them through the middle, and placed both parts opposite one another. But the birds he did not divide.
Hij haalde die alle, sneed ze middendoor, en legde de stukken tegenover elkaar; maar de vogels sneed hij niet door.
11 And birds descended upon the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
En toen de roofvogels neerstreken op de dode rompen, joeg Abram ze weg.
12 And when the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a dread, great and dark, invaded him.
Bij het ondergaan der zon werd Abram door een diepe slaap overvallen, en een sombere, geweldige angst greep hem aan.
13 And it was said to him: “Know beforehand that your future offspring will be sojourners in a land not their own, and they will subjugate them in servitude and afflict them for four hundred years.
Toen sprak Hij tot Abram: Weet wel, dat uw nakomelingen als vreemden in een land zullen toeven, dat hun niet toebehoort. Zij zullen daar als slaven dienen, en men zal hen vierhonderd jaar lang verdrukken.
14 Yet truly, I will judge the nation that they will serve, and after this they will depart with great substance.
Maar van het volk, dat zij als slaven dienen, zal Ik rekenschap eisen; en daarna zullen zij uittrekken met rijke buit.
15 But you will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.
Gij zelf zult in vrede tot uw vaderen gaan, en in hoge ouderdom worden begraven.
16 But in the fourth generation, they will return here. For the iniquities of the Amorites are not yet completed, even to this present time.”
Eerst het vierde geslacht zal hier terugkeren; want eerder is de maat van de misdaden der Amorieten niet vol.
17 Then, when the sun had set, there came a dark mist, and there appeared a smoking furnace and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions.
En toen de zon was ondergegaan, en er een diepe duisternis heerste, verscheen er een rokende oven en een brandende fakkel; deze gingen tussen die stukken door.
18 On that day, God formed a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt, even to the great river Euphrates:
Op die dag sloot Jahweh met Abram het volgend verbond: Aan uw nakomelingschap geef Ik dit land in bezit van de beek van Egypte af tot aan de grote rivier de Eufraat;
19 the land of the Kenites and the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites
met de Kenieten, Kenizzieten en Kadmonieten,
20 and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, likewise the Rephaim,
de Chittieten, Perizzieten en Refaieten,
21 and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
de Amorieten, Kanaänieten, Girgasjieten en Jeboesieten.
