Deuteronomy 5
1 And Moses summoned all of Israel, and he said to them: “Listen, O Israel, to the ceremonies and judgments, which I am speaking to your ears on this day. Learn them, and fulfill them in deed.
Moïse donc appela tout Israël, et leur dit: Ecoute, Israël, les statuts et les droits que je te prononce aujourd'hui, vous les entendant, afin que vous les appreniez, et que vous les gardiez pour les faire.
2 The Lord our God formed a covenant with us at Horeb.
L'Eternel notre Dieu a traité alliance avec nous en Horeb.
3 He did not make the covenant with our fathers, but with us, who are alive and in the present time.
Dieu n'a point traité cette alliance avec nos pères, mais avec nous, qui sommes ici aujourd'hui tous vivants.
4 He spoke to us face to face on the mountain, from the midst of fire.
L'Eternel vous parla face à face sur la montagne, du milieu du feu.
5 I was the mediator, for I was in the middle between the Lord and you, at that time, to announce his words to you. For you were afraid of the fire, and so you did not ascend to the mountain. And he said:
Je me tenais en ce temps-là entre l'Eternel et vous, pour vous rapporter la parole de l'Eternel; parce que vous aviez peur de ce feu, vous ne montâtes point sur la montagne, [et le Seigneur] dit:
6 ‘I am the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude.
Je suis l'Eternel ton Dieu, qui t'ai tiré du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude.
7 You shall not have strange gods in my sight.
Tu n'auras point d'autres dieux devant ma face.
8 You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor the likeness of anything, which is in heaven above, or on earth below, or which abides in the waters under the earth.
Tu ne te feras point d'image taillée, ni aucune ressemblance des choses qui sont là-haut aux cieux, ni ici bas sur la terre, ni dans les eaux qui sont sous la terre.
9 You shall not adore and you shall not worship these things. For I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, repaying the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation to those who hate me,
Tu ne te prosterneras point devant elles, et tu ne les serviras point; car je suis l'Eternel ton Dieu, le [Dieu] Fort qui est jaloux, [et ] qui punis l'iniquité des pères sur les enfants, jusqu'à la troisième et à la quatrième [génération] de ceux qui me haïssent.
10 and acting with mercy in thousands of ways to those who love me and keep my precepts.
Et qui fais miséricorde jusqu'à mille [générations] à ceux qui m'aiment et qui gardent mes commandements.
11 You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain. For he will not go unpunished who takes up his name over an unimportant matter.
Tu ne prendras point le Nom de l'Eternel ton Dieu en vain; car l'Eternel ne tiendra point pour innocent celui qui aura pris son Nom en vain.
12 Observe the day of the Sabbath, so that you may sanctify it, just as the Lord your God has instructed you.
Garde le jour du repos pour le sanctifier, ainsi que l'Eternel ton Dieu te l'a commandé.
13 For six days, you shall labor and do all your work.
Tu travailleras six jours, et tu feras toute ton œuvre;
14 The seventh is the day of the Sabbath, that is, the rest of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, nor shall your son, nor daughter, nor man servant, nor woman servant, nor ox, nor donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor the sojourner who is within your gates, so that your men and woman servants may rest, just as you do.
Mais le septième jour [est] le repos de l'Eternel ton Dieu; tu ne feras aucune œuvre en ce jour-là, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton bœuf, ni ton âne, ni aucune de tes bêtes, ni ton étranger qui [est] dans tes portes, afin que ton serviteur et ta servante se reposent comme toi.
15 Remember that you also were servants in Egypt, and the Lord your God led you away from that place with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Because of this, he has instructed you so that you would observe the Sabbath day.
Et qu'il te souvienne que tu as été esclave au pays d'Egypte, et que l'Eternel ton Dieu t'en a retiré à main forte, et à bras étendu; c'est pourquoi l'Eternel ton Dieu t'a commandé de garder le jour du repos.
16 Honor your father and mother, just as the Lord your God has instructed you, so that you may live a long time, and so that it may be well with you in the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.
Honore ton père et ta mère, comme l'Eternel ton Dieu te l'a commandé, afin que tes jours soient prolongés, et afin que tu prospères sur la terre que l'Eternel ton Dieu te donne.
17 You shall not murder.
Tu ne tueras point.
18 And you shall not commit adultery.
Et tu ne paillarderas point.
19 And you shall not commit theft.
Et tu ne déroberas point.
20 Neither shall you speak false testimony against your neighbor.
Et tu ne diras point de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.
21 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his house, nor his field, nor his man servant, nor his woman servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything out of all that is his.’
Tu ne convoiteras point la femme de ton prochain, tu ne souhaiteras point la maison de ton prochain, ni son champ, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni aucune chose qui soit à ton prochain.
22 The Lord spoke these words to the entire multitude of you on the mountain, from the midst of the fire and the cloud and the darkness, with a loud voice, adding nothing more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone, which he delivered to me.
L'Eternel prononça ces paroles à toute votre assemblée sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, de la nuée et de l'obscurité, avec une voix forte, et il ne prononça rien davantage; puis il les écrivit dans deux Tables de pierre, qu'il me donna.
23 Then, after you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, and you saw the mountain burning, you approached me, all you leaders of the tribes and those greater by birth. And you said:
r il arriva qu'aussitôt que vous eûtes entendu cette voix du milieu de l'obscurité, parce que la montagne était toute en feu, vous vous approchâtes de moi, [savoir] tous les chefs de vos Tribus et vos anciens;
24 ‘Behold, the Lord our God has revealed to us his majesty and his greatness. We have heard his voice from the midst of fire, and we have proven today that, though God is speaking with man, man has lived.
Et vous dîtes: Voici, l'Eternel notre Dieu nous a fait voir sa gloire et sa grandeur, et nous avons entendu sa voix du milieu du feu; aujourd'hui nous avons vu que Dieu a parlé avec l'homme, et que l'homme est demeuré en vie.
25 Therefore, why should we die, and why should this very great fire devour us? For if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, we will die.
Et maintenant pourquoi mourrions-nous? Car ce grand feu-là nous consumera; si nous entendons encore une fois la voix de l'Eternel notre Dieu, nous mourrons.
26 What is all flesh, that it would hear the voice of the living God, who speaks from the midst of fire, just as we have heard it, and be able to live?
Car qui est l'homme, quel qu'il soit, qui ait entendu, comme nous, la voix du Dieu vivant, parlant du milieu du feu, et qui soit demeuré en vie?
27 Instead, you should approach and listen to all the things that the Lord our God will say to you. And you will speak to us, and we will listen and do these things.’
Approche-toi, et écoute tout ce que l'Eternel notre Dieu dira; puis tu nous rediras tout ce que l'Eternel notre Dieu t'aura dit, nous l'entendrons, et nous le ferons.
28 But when the Lord had heard this, he said to me: ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they spoke to you. All this, they have spoken well.
Et l'Eternel ouït la voix de vos paroles pendant que vous me parliez, et l'Eternel me dit: J'ai ouï la voix des discours de ce peuple, lesquels ils t'ont tenu; tout ce qu ils ont dit, ils l'ont bien dit.
29 Who will grant to them to have such a mind, so that they may fear me, and may keep all my commandments at all times, so that it may be well with them and with their sons forever?
Ô! s'ils avaient toujours ce même cœur pour me craindre, et pour garder tous mes commandements, afin qu'ils prospérassent, eux et leurs enfants à jamais.
30 Go and say to them: Return to your tents.
Va, dis-leur: Retournez-vous-en dans vos tentes.
31 But as for you, stand here with me, and I will speak to you all my commandments and ceremonies, as well as judgments. These, you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land, which I will give to them as a possession.
Mais toi, demeure ici avec moi, et je te dirai tous les commandements, les statuts, et les droits que tu leur enseigneras, afin qu'ils les fassent au pays que je leur donne pour le posséder.
32 And so, keep and do the things which the Lord God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside, neither to the right, nor to the left.
Vous prendrez donc garde de les faire; comme l'Eternel votre Dieu vous l'a commandé; vous ne vous en détournerez ni à droite ni à gauche.
33 For you shall walk in the way that the Lord your God has instructed, so that you may live, and it may be well with you, and your days may be extended in the land of your possession.’”
Vous marcherez dans toute la voie que l'Eternel votre Dieu vous a prescrite, afin que vous viviez, et que vous prospériez, et que vous prolongiez vos jours au pays que vous posséderez.
