2 Chronicles 10
1 Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.
Et Roboam s'en alla à Sichem, parce que tout Israël était venu à Sichem pour l'établir Roi.
2 But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.
Or il arriva que quand Jéroboam fils de Nébat, qui était en Egypte, où il s'en était fui de devant le Roi Salomon, l'eut appris, il revint d'Egypte.
3 And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:
Car on l'avait envoyé appeler. Ainsi Jéroboam et tout Israël vinrent et parlèrent à Roboam, en disant:
4 “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”
Ton père a mis sur nous un pesant joug, mais toi allège maintenant cette rude servitude de ton père, et ce pesant joug, qu'il a mis sur nous, et nous te servirons.
5 But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,
Et il leur répondit: Retournez auprès de moi dans trois jours; et le peuple s'en alla.
6 he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”
Et le Roi Roboam demanda conseil aux vieillards qui avaient été auprès de Salomon son père lorsqu'il vivait, et leur dit: Comment, et quelle chose me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?
7 And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”
Et ils lui dirent: Si tu agis avec bonté envers ce peuple, que tu leur complaises, et que tu leur parles doucement, ils te seront serviteurs à toujours.
8 But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.
Mais il laissa le conseil que les vieillards lui avaient donné, et demanda conseil aux jeunes gens qui avaient été nourris avec lui, [et] qui étaient auprès de lui.
9 And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’”
Et il leur dit: Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple qui m'a dit: Allège le joug que ton père a mis sur nous?
10 But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.
Et les jeunes gens qui avaient été nourris avec lui, lui répondirent, en disant: Tu diras ainsi à ce peuple qui t'a parlé, et t'a dit: Ton père a mis sur nous un pesant joug, mais toi allège-le-nous; tu leur répondras donc ainsi: Ce qu'il y a de plus petit en moi, est plus gros que les reins de mon père.
11 My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’”
Or mon père a mis sur vous un pesant joug, mais moi je rendrai votre joug encore plus pesant; mon père vous a châtiés avec des verges, mais moi [je vous châtierai] avec des fouets.
12 Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.
Trois jours après Jéroboam, avec tout le peuple vint vers Roboam, selon que le Roi leur avait dit: Retournez vers moi dans trois jours.
13 And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.
Mais le Roi leur répondit rudement; car le Roi Roboam négligea le conseil des vieillards.
14 And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”
Et il leur parla selon le conseil des jeunes gens, en disant: Mon père a mis sur vous un pesant joug, mais moi je rendrai votre joug encore plus pesant; mon père vous a châtiés avec des verges, mais moi [je vous châtierai] avec des fouets.
15 And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.
Le Roi donc n'écouta point le peuple, car cela était conduit par Dieu, afin que l'Eternel ratifiât sa parole, qu'il avait prononcée à Jéroboam fils de Nébat, par le moyen d'Ahija Silonite.
16 Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.
Et quand tout Israël eut vu que le Roi ne les avait point écoutés, le peuple répondit au Roi, en disant: Quelle part avons-nous en David? Nous n'avons point d'héritage au fils d'Isaï; Israël, que chacun se retire en ses tentes; et toi David, pourvois maintenant à ta maison. Ainsi tout Israël s'en alla en ses tentes.
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.
Mais quant aux enfants d'Israël qui demeuraient dans les villes de Juda, Roboam régna sur eux.
18 And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was in charge of the tributes. And the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died. And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot, and he fled to Jerusalem.
Alors le Roi Roboam envoya Hadoram, qui était commis sur les tributs; mais les enfants d'Israël l'assommèrent de pierres, et il mourut. Et le Roi Roboam se hâta de monter sur un chariot, et s'enfuit à Jérusalem.
19 And Israel withdrew from the house of David, even to this day.
Ainsi Israël se rebella contre la maison de David, jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
