1 Samuel 24
1 And when Saul had returned after pursuing the Philistines, they reported to him, saying, “Behold, David is in the desert of Engedi.”
Et comme Saül était revenu de son expédition contre les Philistins, il reçut cet avis: Voici, David est au désert de Enguedi.
2 Therefore, Saul, taking three thousand elect men from all of Israel, traveled in order to search for David and his men, even upon the most broken rocks, which are passable only to mountain goats.
Alors Saül leva trois mille hommes d'élite sur tout Israël et il se mit en marche pour chercher David et ses gens sur les rochers des bouquetins.
3 And he arrived at the sheepfolds, which presented themselves along the way. And a cave was in that place, which Saul entered, so that he might ease his bowels. But David and his men were hiding in the interior part of the cave.
Et il vint aux parcs des brebis qui sont sur la route; et là était une grotte, et Saül y entra pour se couvrir les pieds; cependant David et ses gens étaient assis au fond de la grotte.
4 And the servants of David said to him: “Behold the day, about which the Lord said to you, ‘I will deliver your enemy to you, so that you may do to him as it will be pleasing in your eyes.’” Then David rose up, and he quietly cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.
Alors les gens de David lui dirent: Voici, c'est le jour où l'Éternel te dit: Voici, Moi-même je mets ton ennemi entre tes mains: traite-le donc à ton gré. Et David se leva et coupa la frange du manteau de Saül à la dérobé.
5 After this, his own heart struck David, because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.
Mais il arriva tôt après que le cœur battit à David de ce qu'il avait coupé la frange de Saül.
6 And he said to his men: “May the Lord be gracious to me, lest I do this thing to my lord, the Christ of the Lord, so that I lay my hand upon him. For he is the Christ of the Lord.”
Et il dit à ses gens: L'Éternel me garde de faire une telle chose à mon Seigneur, à l'Oint de l'Éternel, que de porter la main sur lui; car il est l'Oint de l'Éternel.
7 And David restrained his men with his words, and he would not permit them to rise up against Saul. And so Saul, going out of the cave, continued to undertake his journey.
Et David tança ses gens et ne leur permit pas d'aller s'attaquer à Saül. Cependant Saul, s'étant levé, sortit de la grotte et continua son chemin.
8 Then David also rose up after him. And departing from the cave, he cried out behind the back of Saul, saying: “My lord, the king!” And Saul looked behind him. And David, bowing himself face down to the ground, reverenced.
Sur ces entrefaites David se leva et sortit de la grotte, et s'adressant par derrière à Saül il dit en s'écriant: Mon Seigneur, le Roi! Alors Saül regarda en arrière, et David s'inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna.
9 And he said to Saul: “Why do you listen to the words of men who say: ‘David seeks evil against you?’
Et David dit à Saül: Pourquoi écoutes-tu les propos des gens qui disent: Voici, David, cherche ta ruine!
10 Behold, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord has delivered you into my hand, in the cave. And I thought that I might kill you. But my eye has spared you. For I said: I will not extend my hand against my lord, for he is the Christ of the Lord.
Voici, en ce jour même tu as vu de tes yeux qu'aujourd'hui où l'Éternel t'a mis entre mes mains dans la grotte et où l'on me disait de te tuer, je t'ai épargné et j'ai dit: Je ne porterai point la main sur mon Seigneur, car c'est l'Oint de l'Éternel.
11 Moreover, see and know, O my father, the edge of your cloak in my hand. For though I cut off the top of your cloak, I was not willing to extend my hand against you. Turn your soul and see that there is no evil in my hand, nor any iniquity or sin against you. Yet you lie in wait for my life, so that you may take it away.
Et, mon père, vois aussi, vois la frange de ton manteau dans ma main! Que si en coupant la frange de ton manteau je ne t'ai pas ôté la vie, reconnais et vois que j'ai la main nette de crime et de révolte et que je ne suis pas coupable envers toi; mais toi, tu guettes ma vie pour me la ravir.
12 May the Lord judge between me and you. And may the Lord vindicate me from you. But my hand will not be against you.
Que l'Éternel juge entre moi et toi et me venge de toi! quant à moi, je ne mettrai pas la main sur toi.
13 So too, it is said in the ancient proverb, ‘From the impious, impiety will go forth.’ Therefore, my hand will not be upon you.
Comme dit le proverbe des aïeux: « Du méchant procède le mal, » je ne mettrai donc pas la main sur toi.
14 Whom are you pursuing, O king of Israel? Whom are you pursuing? You are pursuing a dead dog, a single flea.
Contre qui le Roi d'Israël marche-t-il? qui poursuis-tu? Un chien mort, quelque puce!
15 May the Lord be the judge, and may he judge between me and you. And may he see and judge my case, and rescue me from your hand.”
Qu'ainsi l'Éternel soit arbitre et qu'il juge entre moi et toi, et qu'il voie et défende ma cause et me rende justice en me tirant de ta main.
16 And when David had completed speaking words in this way to Saul, Saul said, “Could this be your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice, and he wept.
Et lorsque David eut achevé de parler en ces termes à Saül, Saül dit: Est-ce là ta voix, mon fils David? Et Saül donna l'essor à sa voix et pleura.
17 And he said to David: “You are more just than I am. For you have distributed good to me, but I have repaid evil to you.
Et il dit à David: Tu es plus juste que moi; car tu m'as fait du bien, tandis que je t'ai rendu le mal.
18 And you have revealed this day the good that you have done for me: how the Lord delivered me into your hand, but you did not kill me.
Et aujourd'hui tu as mis en évidence le bien que tu m'as fait, puisque l'Éternel m'ayant mis entre tes mains, tu ne m'as pas ôté la vie. En effet, si quelqu'un rencontre son ennemi, le laisse-t-il aller sain et sauf?
19 For who, when he will have found his enemy, will release him along a good path? So may the Lord repay you for this good turn, because you have acted on my behalf this day.
Que l'Éternel donc te fasse du bien en retour de ce que tu as fait aujourd'hui pour moi.
20 And now I know certainly that you shall be king, and you shall have the kingdom of Israel in your hand.
Or voici, je sais que tu deviendras Roi et que la Souveraineté d'Israël subsistera en ta main;
21 Swear to me in the Lord that you will not take away my offspring after me, nor take away my name from the house of my father.”
jure-moi donc par l'Éternel que tu n'extirperas pas ma souche après moi et que tu ne feras pas disparaître mon nom de la maison de mon père.
22 And David swore to Saul. Therefore, Saul went away to his own house. And David and his men ascended to places that were more secure.
Et David en fit le serment à Saül; et Saül reprit le chemin de sa maison et David et le siens gagnèrent la hauteur.
