1 Samuel 11
1 And, about a month afterward, it happened that Nahash the Ammonite ascended and began to fight against Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Consider a pact with us, and we will serve you.”
Et il arriva environ un mois après que Naas, roi des Ammonites, monta et commença à combattre contre Jabès-Galaad. Et tous les hommes de Jabès dirent à Naas: Acceptez-nous comme alliés, et nous vous servirons.
2 And Nahash the Ammonite responded to them, “With this will I strike a pact with you: if I may pluck out all your right eyes, and set you as a disgrace against all of Israel.”
Et Naas, l’Ammonite, leur répondit: L’alliance que je ferai avec vous, sera que je vous arracherai à tous l’œil droit et que je vous rendrai l’opprobre de tout Israël.
3 And the elders of Jabesh said to him: “Grant to us seven days, so that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel. And if there is no one who may defend us, we will go out to you.”
Et les anciens de Jabès lui répliquèrent: Accordez-nous sept jours, afin que nous envoyions des messagers dans tous les confins d’Israël, et s’il n’y a personne pour nous défendre, nous viendrons à vous.
4 Therefore, the messengers arrived at Gibeah of Saul. And they spoke these words in the hearing of the people. And all the people lifted up their voice and wept.
Les messagers vinrent donc à Gabaa, patrie de Saül, et rapportèrent ces paroles, le peuple l’entendant; alors tout le peuple éleva sa voix, et pleura.
5 And behold, Saul arrived, following oxen from the field. And he said, “What has happened to the people that they would weep?” And they explained to him the words of the men from Jabesh.
Et voilà que Saul venait de la campagne, suivant les bœufs, et il dit: Qu’a le peuple, qu’il pleure? Et on lui raconta les paroles des hommes de Jabès.
6 And the Spirit of the Lord rose up within Saul when he had heard these words, and his fury was enraged exceedingly.
Or, l’esprit du Seigneur se saisit de Saül, lorsqu’il eut entendu ces paroles, et sa fureur fut très irritée.
7 And taking both the oxen, he cut them into pieces, and he sent them into all the borders of Israel, by the hands of messengers, saying, “Whoever will not go out and follow Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” Therefore, the fear of the Lord entered into the people, and they went out like one man.
Et prenant l’un et l’autre bœufs, il les coupa en morceaux, et les envoya dans tous les confins d’Israël par la main des messagers, disant: Quiconque ne sortira pas et ne suivra pas Saül et Samuel, c’est ainsi qu’il sera fait à ses bœufs. Ainsi la crainte du Seigneur saisit le peuple, et ils sortirent comme un seul homme.
8 And he took a census of them at Bezek. And there were three hundred thousand of the sons of Israel. And there were thirty thousand of the men of Judah.
Et Saül en fit la revue à Bézech, et il y eut trois cent mille enfants d’Israël; mais des hommes de Juda, trente mille.
9 And they said to the messengers who had arrived: “So shall you say to the men who are of Jabesh Gilead: ‘Tomorrow, when the sun will be hot, you shall have salvation.’” Therefore, the messengers went and announced it to the men of Jabesh, who became joyful.
Et ils dirent aux messagers qui étaient venus: C’est ainsi que vous direz aux hommes qui sont à Jabès-Galaad: Demain, le salut sera pour vous, lorsque le soleil sera devenu chaud. Les messagers vinrent donc, et apportèrent cette nouvelle aux hommes de Jabès, qui se livrèrent à la joie.
10 And they said, “In the morning, we will go out to you. And you may do whatever you please with us.”
Et ils dirent: Demain nous nous donnerons à vous, et vous nous ferez tout ce qui vous plaira.
11 And it happened that, when the next day had arrived, Saul arranged the people into three parts. And he entered into the middle of the camp at the early morning watch, and he struck down the Ammonites until the day grew hot. Then the remainder were dispersed, so much so that not even two of them were left together.
Or, il arriva, que lorsque le lendemain fut venu, Saül partagea le peuple en trois parties; et il entra au milieu du camp pendant la veille du matin, et il battit Ammon, jusqu’à ce que le soleil fût devenu chaud. Ceux qui échappèrent furent dispersés, de manière qu’il n’en resta pas deux ensemble.
12 And the people said to Samuel: “Who is the one who said, ‘Should Saul reign over us?’ Present the men, and we will put them to death.”
Alors le peuple dit à Samuel: Quel est celui qui a dit: Est-ce que Saul régnera sur nous? Donnez-nous ces hommes, et nous les tuerons.
13 And Saul said: “No one shall be killed on this day. For today the Lord has accomplished salvation in Israel.”
Et Saül répondit: Personne ne sera mis à mort en ce jour, parce que le Seigneur a accordé aujourd’hui le salut dans Israël.
14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and let us renew the kingdom there.”
Mais Samuel dit au peuple: Venez, et allons à Galgala, et proclamons-y de nouveau la royauté.
15 And all the people traveled to Gilgal. And there they made Saul king, in the sight of the Lord at Gilgal. And there they immolated victims of peace, before the Lord. And there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced exceedingly.
Et tout le peuple alla à Galgala, et ils y firent Saul roi devant le Seigneur, à Galgala; et ils immolèrent là des victimes pacifiques devant le Seigneur. Et Saül se livra là, ainsi que tous les peuples d’Israël, à une joie très grande.
