1 Chronicles 19
1 Now it happened that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, died, and his son reigned in his place.
Or il arriva après cela que Nahas Roi des enfants de Hammon mourut, et son fils régna en sa place.
2 And David said: “I will act with mercy toward Hanun, the son of Nahash. For his father was gracious to me.” And so David sent messengers to console him over the death of his father. But when they had reached the land of the sons of Ammon, so that they might console Hanun,
Et David dit: J'userai de gratuité envers Hanun, fils de Nahas; car son père a usé de gratuité envers moi. Ainsi David envoya des messagers pour le consoler sur la mort de son père; et les serviteurs de David vinrent au pays des enfants de Hammon vers Hanun pour le consoler.
3 the leaders of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun: “Do you think that perhaps David has sent them to console you in order to honor your father? Have you not noticed that his servants came to you so that they might explore, and investigate, and examine your land?”
Mais les principaux d'entre les enfants de Hammon dirent à Hanun: Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t'a envoyé des consolateurs? n'est-ce pas pour examiner exactement et épier le pays, afin de le détruire, que ses serviteurs sont venus vers toi?
4 And so Hanun shaved the heads and beards of the servants of David, and he cut away their tunics from the buttocks to the feet, and he sent them away.
Hanun donc prit les serviteurs de David, et les fit raser, et fit couper leurs habits par le milieu jusqu'aux hanches, puis il les renvoya.
5 And when they had gone, and had sent word to David, (for they had suffered a great disgrace, ) he sent to meet them, and he instructed them that they should remain at Jericho until their beards grew, and then they should return.
Et ils s'en allèrent, et le firent savoir par [le moyen] de quelques personnes à David, qui envoya au devant d'eux; car ces hommes-là étaient fort confus. Et le Roi leur manda: Demeurez à Jérico jusqu'à ce que votre barbe soit recrue; et alors vous retournerez.
6 Then, when the sons of Ammon realized that they had committed an injury against David, both Hanun and the rest of the people sent one thousand talents of silver, so that they might hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, and from Syrian Maacah, and from Zobah.
Or les enfants de Hammon voyant qu'ils s'étaient mis en mauvaise odeur auprès de David, Hanun et eux envoyèrent mille talents d'argent, pour prendre à leurs dépens des chariots et des gens de cheval de Mésopotamie, et de Syrie, de Mahaca, et de Tsoba.
7 And they hired thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah with his people. When these had arrived, they made camp in the region opposite Medeba. Also, the sons of Ammon, gathering from their cities, went to war.
Et ils levèrent à leurs frais pour eux trente-deux mille hommes, [et] des chariots, et le Roi de Mahaca avec son peuple qui vinrent, et se campèrent devant Médeba. Les Hammonites aussi s'assemblèrent de leurs villes, et vinrent pour combattre.
8 And when David had heard this, he sent Joab and the entire army of strong men.
Ce que David ayant appris, il envoya Joab, et ceux de toute l'armée qui étaient les plus vaillants.
9 And the sons of Ammon, going out, set up a battle line before the gate of the city. But the kings who had come to their aid stood separately in the field.
Et les enfants de Hammon sortirent, et rangèrent leur armée en bataille à l'entrée de la ville, et les Rois qui étaient venus, étaient à part dans la campagne.
10 And so Joab, understanding the war to be set facing him and behind his back, chose the strongest men from all of Israel, and he went out against the Syrians.
Et Joab voyant que l'armée était tournée contre lui, devant et derrière, prit de tous les gens d'élite d'Israël, et les rangea contre les Syriens.
11 But the remaining portion of the people he placed under the hand of his brother Abishai. And they went out against the sons of Ammon.
Et il donna la conduite du reste du peuple à Abisaï son frère; et on les rangea contre les enfants de Hammon.
12 And he said: “If the Syrians prevail over me, then you shall be a help to me. But if the sons of Ammon prevail over you, I will be a safeguard for you.
Et [Joab lui] dit: Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras me délivrer; et si les enfants de Hammon sont plus forts que toi, je te délivrerai.
13 Be strengthened, and let us act manfully on behalf of our people, and on behalf of the cities of our God. And the Lord will do what is good in his own sight.”
Sois vaillant, et portons-nous vaillamment pour notre peuple, et pour les villes de notre Dieu; et que l'Eternel fasse ce qui lui semblera bon.
14 Therefore, Joab, and the people who were with him, went out to battle against the Syrians. And he put them to flight.
Alors Joab et le peuple qui était avec lui s'approchèrent pour donner bataille aux Syriens, qui s'enfuirent de devant lui.
15 Then the sons of Ammon, seeing that the Syrians had fled, also themselves fled from Abishai, his brother, and they entered into the city. And now Joab returned to Jerusalem.
Et les enfants de Hammon voyant que les Syriens s'en étaient fuis, eux aussi s'enfuirent de devant Abisaï frère de Joab, et rentrèrent dans la ville; et Joab revint à Jérusalem.
16 But the Syrians, seeing that they had fallen before Israel, sent messengers, and they brought the Syrians who were across the river. And Shophach, the leader of the military of Hadadezer, was their commander.
Mais les Syriens, qui avaient été battus par ceux d'Israël, envoyèrent des messagers, et firent venir les Syriens qui étaient au delà du fleuve; et Sophach capitaine de l'armée de Hadarhézer les conduisait.
17 When this had been reported to David, he gathered together all of Israel, and he crossed the Jordan. And he rushed toward them. And he set up a battle line facing them. And they fought against him.
Ce qui ayant été rapporté à David, il assembla tout Israël, et passa le Jourdain, et alla au devant d'eux, et se rangea en bataille contr'eux. David donc rangea la bataille contre les Syriens, et ils combattirent contre lui.
18 But the Syrians fled from Israel. And David killed of the Syrians seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand men on foot, and Shophach, the leader of the army.
Mais les Syriens s'enfuirent de devant Israël; et David défit sept mille chariots des Syriens, et quarante mille hommes de pied, et il tua Sophach le Chef de l'armée.
19 Then the servants of Hadadezer, seeing themselves to be overwhelmed by Israel, crossed over to David, and they served him. And Syria was no longer willing to offer aid to the sons of Ammon.
Alors les serviteurs de Hadarhézer voyant qu'ils avaient été battus par ceux d'Israël, firent la paix avec David, et lui furent asservis; et les Syriens ne voulurent plus secourir les enfants de Hammon.
