Proverbs 28
1 The ungodly [man] flees when no one pursues: but the righteous is confident as a lion.
Sans qu'on le poursuive, l'impie prend la fuite, mais le juste a l'assurance du jeune lion.
2 By reason of the sins of ungodly men quarrels arise; but a wise man will quell them.
Par la révolte d'un pays, ses princes deviennent nombreux, mais si les hommes sont sages, et connaissent la droiture, [le prince] règne longtemps.
3 A bold man oppresses the poor by ungodly deeds. As an impetuous and profitable rain,
Un homme qui est pauvre, et opprime les petits, est une pluie qui balaie et ne laisse point de pain.
4 so they that forsake the law praise ungodliness; but they that love the law fortify themselves with a wall.
Ceux qui négligent la Loi, louent l'impie, mais ceux qui gardent la Loi, s'indignent contre lui.
5 Evil men will not understand judgement: but they that seek the Lord will understand everything.
Les hommes livrés au mal n'ont pas l'intelligence du juste, mais ceux qui cherchent l'Éternel, ont l'intelligence de tout.
6 A poor man walking in truth is better than a rich liar.
Mieux vaut un pauvre qui marche dans son innocence, que celui qui tourne dans une double voie, et qui est riche.
7 A wise son keeps the law: but he that keeps up debauchery dishonours his father.
Qui garde la Loi, est un fils intelligent, mais qui se plaît avec les prodigues, fait honte à son père.
8 He that increases his wealth by usuries and [unjust] gains, gathers it for him that pities the poor.
Celui qui augmente son bien par l'usure et l'intérêt, l'amasse pour le bienfaiteur du pauvre.
9 He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even he has made his prayer abominable.
De celui qui détourne l'oreille pour ne pas écouter la Loi, les prières aussi sont une abomination.
10 He that causes upright men to err in an evil way, himself shall fall into destruction: transgressor also shall pass by prosperity, but shall not enter into it.
Celui qui entraîne le juste dans la mauvaise voie, tombera dans la fosse même qu'il a faite; mais les innocents auront le bien pour héritage.
11 A rich man is wise in his own conceit; but an intelligent poor man will condemn him.
A ses propres yeux le riche est sage, mais le pauvre intelligent le pénètre.
12 By reason of the help of righteous men great glory arises: but in the places of the ungodly men are caught.
Quand les justes triomphent, il y a grande pompe; mais quand les impies s'élèvent, les hommes se cachent.
13 He that covers his own ungodliness shall not prosper: but he that blames [himself] shall be loved.
Celui qui cache ses fautes, ne prospère point; mais qui les confesse et les délaisse, obtient miséricorde.
14 Blessed is the man who religiously fears always: but the hard of heart shall fall into mischiefs.
Heureux l'homme qui vit toujours dans la crainte! mais qui endurcit son cœur, tombe dans le malheur.
15 A hungry lion and a thirsty wolf [is he], who, being poor, rules over a poor nation.
Un lion rugissant et un ours affamé, c'est le prince impie d'un peuple pauvre.
16 A king in need of revenues is a great oppressor: but he that hates injustice shall live a long time.
Le prince privé de sens est un grand oppresseur; mais celui qui déteste la cupidité, règne longuement.
17 He that becomes surety for a man charged with murder shall be an exile, and not in safety. Chasten your son, and he shall love you, and give honour to your soul: he shall not obey a sinful nation.
L'homme qui est sous le poids d'un meurtre, fuit jusques dans le tombeau, craignant d'être saisi.
18 He that walks justly is assisted: but he that walks in crooked ways shall be entangled [therein].
Celui qui suit la voie innocente, sera sauvé; mais l'homme tortueux qui suit deux voies, tombera dans l'une.
19 He that tills his own land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that follows idleness shall have plenty of poverty.
Qui cultive son champ, sera rassasié de pain; et qui s'attache aux fainéants, sera rassasié d'indigence.
20 A man worthy of credit shall be much blessed: but the wicked shall not be unpunished.
L'homme probe sera comblé de bénédictions, mais qui veut s'enrichir promptement, ne reste pas impuni.
21 He that reverences not the persons of the just is not good: such a one will sell a man for a morsel of bread.
Etre partial n'est point chose bonne; cependant pour une bouchée de pain, tel se rend criminel.
22 An envious man makes haste to be rich, and knows not that the merciful man will have the mastery over him.
L'envieux court après la richesse, et ne voit pas l'indigence qui fond sur lui.
23 He that reproves a man's ways shall have more favour than he that flatters with the tongue.
Celui qui reprend les hommes, finit par être mieux vu que le flatteur.
24 He that casts off father or mother, and thinks he sins not; the same is partaker with an ungodly man.
Celui qui a dépouillé son père ou sa mère, et dit: Ce n'est pas un crime! est camarade du brigand.
25 An unbelieving man judges rashly: but he that trusts in the Lord will act carefully.
L'homme qui s'enfle, excite les querelles, mais qui se confie dans l'Éternel, aura l'abondance.
26 He that trusts to a bold heart, such an one is a fool: but he that walks in wisdom shall be safe.
Celui qui se fie en son sens, est un fou; mais qui suit la voie de la sagesse, échappe.
27 He that gives to the poor shall not be in lack: but he that turns away his eye [from him] shall be in great distress.
Pour qui donne au pauvre, il n'y a point d'indigence, mais pour qui ferme ses yeux, grande malédiction.
28 In the places of ungodly [men] the righteous mourn: but in their destruction the righteous shall be multiplied.
Quand les impies s'élèvent, les hommes se cachent, mais quand ils périssent, les justes s'accroissent.
