< Proverbs 10 >

1 A wise son makes [his] father glad: but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.
The parablis of Salomon. A wijs sone makith glad the fadir; but a fonned sone is the sorewe of his modir.
2 Treasures shall not profit the lawless: but righteousness shall deliver from death.
Tresouris of wickidnesse schulen not profite; but riytfulnesse schal delyuere fro deth.
3 The Lord will not famish a righteous soul: but he will overthrow the life of the ungodly.
The Lord schal not turmente the soule of a iust man with hungur; and he schal distrie the tresouns of vnpitouse men.
4 Poverty brings a man low: but the hands of the vigourous make rich. A son who is instructed shall be wise, and shall use the fool for a servant.
A slow hond hath wrouyt nedynesse; but the hond of stronge men makith redi richessis. Forsothe he that enforsith to gete `ony thing bi leesyngis, fedith the wyndis; sotheli the same man sueth briddis fleynge.
5 A wise son is saved from heat: but a lawless son is blighted of the winds in harvest.
He that gaderith togidere in heruest, is a wijs sone; but he that slepith in sommer, is a sone of confusioun.
6 The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the just: but untimely grief shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.
The blessing of God is ouer the heed of a iust man; but wickidnesse hilith the mouth of wickid men.
7 The memory of the just is praised; but the name of the ungodly [man] is extinguished.
The mynde of a iust man schal be with preisingis; and the name of wickid men schal wexe rotun.
8 A wise man in heart will receive commandments; but he that is unguarded in his lips shall be overthrown in his perverseness.
A wijs man schal resseyue comaundementis with herte; a fool is betun with lippis.
9 He that walks simply, walks confidently; but he that perverts his ways shall be known.
He that goith simpli, goith tristili; but he that makith schrewid hise weies, schal be opyn.
10 He that winks with his eyes deceitfully, procures griefs for men; but he that reproves boldly is a peacemaker.
He that bekeneth with the iye, schal yyue sorewe; a fool schal be betun with lippis.
11 [There is] a fountain of life in the hand of a righteous man; but destruction shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.
The veyne of lijf is the mouth of a iust man; but the mouth of wickid men hilith wickidnesse.
12 Hatred stirs up strife; but affection covers all that do not love strife.
Hatrede reisith chidingis; and charite hilith alle synnes.
13 He that brings forth wisdom from his lips smites the fool with a rod.
Wisdom is foundun in the lippis of a wise man; and a yerd in the bak of him that is nedi of herte.
14 The wise will hide discretion; but the mouth of the hasty draws near to ruin.
Wise men hiden kunnyng; but the mouth of a fool is nexte to confusioun.
15 The wealth of rich men is a strong city; but poverty is the ruin of the ungodly.
The catel of a riche man is the citee of his strengthe; the drede of pore men is the nedynesse of hem.
16 The works of the righteous produce life; but the fruits of the ungodly [produce] sins.
The werk of a iust man is to lijf; but the fruyt of a wickid man is to synne.
17 Instruction keeps the right ways of life; but instruction unchastened goes astray.
The weie of lijf is to him that kepith chastising; but he that forsakith blamyngis, errith.
18 Righteous lips cover enmity; but they that utter railings are most foolish.
False lippis hiden hatrede; he that bringith forth dispisinge is vnwijs.
19 By a multitude of words you shall not escape sin; but if you refrain your lips you will be prudent.
Synne schal not faile in myche spekyng; but he that mesurith hise lippis, is moost prudent.
20 The tongue of the just is tried silver; but the heart of the ungodly shall fail.
Chosun siluer is the tunge of a iust man; the herte of wickid men is for nouyt.
21 The lips of the righteous know sublime [truths]: but the foolish die in lack.
The lippis of a iust man techen ful manye men; but thei that ben vnlerned, schulen die in nedinesse of herte.
22 The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the righteous; it enriches [him], and grief of heart shall not be added to [it].
The blessing of the Lord makith riche men; and turment schal not be felowschipid to hem.
23 A fool does mischief in sport; but wisdom brings forth prudence for a man.
A fool worchith wickidnesse as bi leiyyng; but `wisdom is prudence to a man.
24 The ungodly is engulfed in destruction; but the desire of the righteous is acceptable.
That that a wickid man dredith, schal come on hym; the desire of iust men schalbe youun to hem.
25 When the storm passes by, the ungodly vanishes away; but the righteous turns aside and escapes for ever.
As a tempeste passynge, a wickid man schal not be; but a iust man schal be as an euerlastynge foundement.
26 As a sour grape is hurtful to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so iniquity hurts those that practise it.
As vynegre noieth the teeth, and smoke noieth the iyen; so a slow man noieth hem that senten hym in the weie.
27 The fear of the Lord adds [length] of days: but the years of the ungodly shall be shortened.
The drede of the Lord encreesith daies; and the yeeris of wickid men schulen be maad schort.
28 Joy rests long with the righteous: but the hope of the ungodly shall perish.
Abiding of iust men is gladnesse; but the hope of wickid men schal perische.
29 The fear of the Lord is a strong hold of the saints: but ruin [comes] to them that work wickedness.
The strengthe of a symple man is the weie of the Lord; and drede to hem that worchen yuel.
30 The righteous shall never fail: but the ungodly shall not dwell in the earth.
A iust man schal not be moued with outen ende; but wickid men schulen not dwelle on the erthe.
31 The mouth of the righteous drops wisdom: but the tongue of the unjust shall perish.
The mouth of a iust man schal bringe forth wisdom; the tunge of schrewis schal perische.
32 The lips of just men drop grace: but the mouth of the ungodly is perverse.
The lippis of a iust man biholden pleasaunt thingis; and the mouth of wickid men byholdith weiward thingis.
