Jeremias 18
1 The word that came from the Lord to
La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie par Yahweh, en ces termes:
2 Jeremias, saying, Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there you shall hear my words.
« Lève-toi et descends à la maison du potier, et là je te ferai entendre ma parole. »
3 So I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he was making a vessel on the stones.
Je descendis à la maison du potier; et voici qu’il faisait son ouvrage sur les roues.
4 And the vessel which he was making with his hands fell: so he made it again another vessel, as it seemed good to him to make [it].
Et le vase qu’il faisait manqua, comme il arrive à l’argile dans la main du potier; et il refit un autre vase, comme il parut bon aux yeux du potier de le faire.
5 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
Et la parole de Yahweh me fut adressée en ces termes:
6 Shall I not be able, O house of Israel, to do to you as this potter? behold, as the clay of the potter are you in my hands.
Est-ce que je ne puis pas vous faire comme a fait ce potier, maison d’Israël; — oracle de Yahweh? Oui, comme l’argile est dans la main du potier, ainsi vous êtes dans ma main, maison d’Israël.
7 [If] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation, or upon a kingdom, to cut them off, and to destroy [them];
Tantôt je parle, touchant une nation et touchant un royaume, d’arracher, d’abattre et de détruire.
8 and that nation turn from all their sins, then will I repent of the evils which I purposed to do to them.
Mais cette nation, contre laquelle j’ai parlé, revient-elle de sa méchanceté, alors je me repens du mal que j’avais résolu de lui faire.
9 And [if] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation and kingdom, to rebuild and to plant [it];
Tantôt je parle, touchant une nation et touchant un royaume, de bâtir et de planter.
10 and they do evil before me, so as not to listen to my voice, then will I repent of the good which I spoke of, to do it to them.
Mais cette nation fait-elle ce qui est mal à mes yeux, en n’écoutant pas ma voix, alors je me repens du bien que j’avais dit que je lui ferais.
11 And now say to the men of Juda, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Behold, I prepare evils against you, and devise a device against you: let every one turn now from his evil way, and amend your practices.
Et maintenant parle donc aux hommes de Juda, et aux habitants de Jérusalem, en ces termes: Ainsi parle Yahweh: Voici que je façonne contre vous un malheur, et que je médite un dessein contre vous. Revenez donc chacun de votre voie mauvaise, et réformez vos voies et vos œuvres.
12 And they said, We will quit ourselves like men, for we will pursue our perverse ways, and we will perform each the lusts of his evil heart.
Mais ils disent: « C’est en vain! Nous suivrons nos pensées, nous agirons chacun selon l’obstination de notre mauvais cœur. »
13 Therefore thus says the Lord; Enquire now amongst the nations, who has heard such very horrible things as the virgin of Israel has done?
C’est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh: Interrogez les nations: Qui a jamais entendu pareille chose? Elle a commis d’horribles abominations, la vierge d’Israël!
14 Will fertilising streams fail [to flow] from a rock, or snow [fail] from Libanus? will water violently impelled by the wind turn aside?
Quitte-t-elle le rocher de la plaine, la neige du Liban? Voit-on tarir les eaux qui viennent de loin, fraîches et courantes?
15 For my people have forgotten me, they have offered incense in vain, and they fail in their ways, [leaving] the ancient tracks, to enter upon impassable paths;
Or mon peuple m’a oublié; il offre de l’encens au néant. Les idoles les font chanceler dans leurs voies, les chemins d’autrefois, pour suivre des sentiers, une route non frayée;
16 to make their land a desolation, and a perpetual hissing; all that go through it shall be amazed, and shall shake their heads.
Pour faire de leur pays une désolation, un objet d’éternelle moquerie; tous ceux qui y passeront seront stupéfaits; et hocheront la tête.
17 I will scatter them before their enemies like an east wind; I will show them the day of their destruction.
Pareil au vent d’orient, je les disperserai devant l’ennemi; je leur montrerai le dos et non la face, au jour de leur désastre.
18 Then they said, Come, and let us devise a device against Jeremias; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and we will hear all his words.
Et ils ont dit: « Venez, formons un complot contre Jérémie; car la loi ne périra pas chez le prêtre, ni le conseil chez le sage, ni la parole de Dieu chez le prophète! Venez, frappons-le avec la langue, et ne prêtons pas l’oreille à tous ses discours. »
19 Hear me, O Lord, and hear the voice of my pleading.
Prête moi l’oreille, Yahweh, et entends la voix de mes adversaires!
20 Forasmuch as evil is rewarded for good; for they have spoken words against my soul, and they have hidden the punishment they [meant] for me; remember that I stood before your face, to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.
Le mal sera-t-il rendu pour le bien, qu’ils creusent une fosse pour mon âme? souviens-toi comment je me suis tenu devant toi, pour te parler en leur faveur, pour détourner d’eux ta colère.
21 Therefore do you deliver their sons to famine, and gather them to the power of the sword: let their women be childless and widows; and let their men be cut off by death, and their young men fall by the sword in war.
C’est pourquoi, livre leurs enfants à la famine, et abandonne-les au tranchant du glaive! Que leurs femmes perdent leurs enfants et leurs époux; que leurs hommes meurent par la peste, et que leurs jeunes gens soient frappés par l’épée dans le combat!
22 Let there be a cry in their houses: you shall bring upon them robbers suddenly: for they have formed a plan to take me, and have hidden snares for me.
Qu’on entende leur cri sortir de leurs maisons, quand tu feras venir subitement sur eux des bandes armées! Car ils ont creusé une fosse pour me prendre, et ils ont caché des filets devant mes pieds.
23 And you, Lord, know all their deadly counsel against me: account not their iniquities guiltless, and blot not out their sins from before you: let their weakness come before you; deal with them in the time of your wrath.
Et toi, Yahweh, tu connais tous leurs complots pour me faire mourir. Ne pardonne pas leur iniquité, n’efface pas leur péché de devant toi; qu’ils s’affaissent devant toi; agis contre eux au temps de ta colère!
