1 THE VISION OF THE DESERT. As though a whirlwind should pass through the desert, coming from a desert, [even] from such a land,

2 [so] a fearful and a grievous vision was declared to me: he that is treacherous deals treacherously, the transgressor transgresses. The Elamites are upon me, and the ambassadors of the Persians come against me: now will I groan and comfort myself.

Une vision effrayante m’a été révélée: "L’Oppresseur opprime, le ravageur ravage. Alerte, Elam, à l’assaut, Mèdes! Je vais mettre fin aux soupirs.

3 Therefore are my loins filled with feebleness, and pangs have seized me as a travailing woman: I dealt wrongfully that I might not hear; I hasted that I might not see.

Voilà pourquoi mes reins sont saisis de tremblement, les douleurs m’ont envahi comme les douleurs d’une femme qui enfante. Je suis pris de vertige au point de ne plus entendre, terrifié au point de ne plus voir.

4 My heart wanders, and transgression overwhelms me; my soul is occupied with fear.

Mon esprit s’égare, la frayeur m’a terrassé; la nuit qui m’était si chère s’est changée pour moi en épouvante.

5 Prepare the table, eat, drink: arise, you princes, and prepare [your] shields.

On dresse la table, on étend les tapis, on mange, on boit. "Debout, princes, huilez le bouclier!"

6 For thus said the Lord to me, Go and station a watchman for yourself, and declare whatever you shall see.

Voici, en effet, ce que m’a dit le Seigneur: "Va, place le guetteur à son poste, qu’il annonce ce qu’il verra!"

7 And I saw two mounted horsemen, and a rider on an ass, and a rider on a camel.

II verra une file de cavaliers, des chars conduits par des coursiers, des hommes montés à dos d’ânes, des hommes montés à dos de chameaux; puis il percevra une rumeur, une formidable rumeur.

8 Listen with great attention, and call you Urias to the watch-tower: the Lord has spoken. I stood continually during the day, and I stood in the camp all night:

Et il s’écriera avec la force du lion: "Sur la tour, Seigneur, je me tiens constamment le jour, et toutes les nuits je suis à mon poste."

9 and, behold, he comes riding in a chariot and pair: and he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all her images and her idols have been crushed to the ground.

Et voici qu’arrivent des hommes à cheval, des chars traînés par des coursiers. De nouveau, élevant la voix, il dit: "Tombée, elle est tombée Babylone, toutes les idoles de ses divinités gisent à terre, réduites en pièces!

10 Hear, you that are left, and you that are in pain, hear what things I have heard of the Lord of hosts [which] the God of Israel has declared to us. THE VISION OF IDUMEA.

Ah! ma paille triturée, ô fils de mon aire! Ce que j’ai appris de la part de l’Eternel-Cebaot, Dieu d’Israël, je vous l’annonce.

11 Call to me out of Seir; guard you the bulwarks.

Oracle contre Douma: Une voix crie vers moi de Séir: "Guetteur, où en est la nuit? Qu’en est-il de la nuit, guetteur?"

12 I watch in the morning and the night: if you would enquire, enquire, and dwell by me.

Le guetteur répond: "Le matin vient, puis ensuite la nuit. Si vous voulez des nouvelles, interrogez; refaites le même chemin, venez."

13 You may lodge in the forest in the evening, or in the way of Daedan.

Oracle contre l’Arabie: Dans les forêts de l’Arabie, passez la nuit, caravanes de Dedân.

14 You that dwell in the country of Thaeman, bring water to meet him that is thirsty;

Vous, habitants du pays de Têma, portez de l’eau au-devant de ceux qui ont soif, présentez aux fugitifs le pain qu’ils réclament.

15 meet the fugitives with bread, because of the multitude of the slain, and because of the multitude of them that lose their way, and because of the multitude of swords, and because of the multitude of bent bows, and because of the multitude of them that have fallen in war.

C’Est devant les glaives qu’ils ont fui, devant les glaives tranchants, devant les arcs tendus et devant la violence des combats.

16 For thus said the Lord to me, Yet a year, as the year of an hireling, [and] the glory of the sons of Kedar shall fail:

Voici, en effet, ce que m’a dit le Seigneur: "Encore une année, pareille aux années du travailleur salarié, et c’en sera fait de toute l’opulence de Kédar;

17 and the remnant of the strong bows of the sons of Kedar shall be small: for the Lord God of Israel has spoken [it].

et les survivants des nombreux archers, des guerriers, enfants de Kêdar, seront réduits à peu de chose." C’Est l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, qui l’a proclamé.
