Exodus 18

1 And Jothor the priest of Madiam, the father-in-law of Moses, heard of all that the Lord did to his people Israel; for the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt.

Et Jéthro, prêtre de Madian, beau-père de Moïse, apprit tout ce que Dieu avait fait pour Moïse et pour Israël, son peuple, en retirant Israël d'Egypte.

2 And Jothor the father-in-law of Moses, took Sepphora the wife of Moses after she had been sent away,

Alors Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, prit Tsippora, femme de Moïse, après son renvoi,

3 and her two sons: the name of the one was Gersam, [his father] saying, I was a sojourner in a strange land; —

et ses deux fils dont l'un se nommait Gerson, car il avait dit: Je suis hôte dans un pays étranger;

4 and the name of the second Eliezer, saying, For the God of my father [is] my helper, and he has rescued me out of the hand of Pharao.

et le nom de l'autre était Éliézer (Dieu est en aide), « car le Dieu de mon père me fut en aide et me déroba au glaive de Pharaon. »

5 And Jothor the father-in-law of Moses, and his sons and his wife, went forth to Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped on the mount of God.

Jéthro donc, beau-père de Moïse, et ses fils et sa femme arrivèrent vers Moïse au désert où il campait, à la montagne de Dieu.

6 And it was told Moses, saying, Behold, your father-in-law Jothor is coming to you, and your wife and two sons with him.

Et il avisa Moïse: Moi, ton beau-père Jéthro, j'arrive chez toi, ainsi que ta femme et ses deux fils avec elle.

7 And Moses went forth to meet his father-in-law, and did him reverence, and kissed him, and they embraced each other, and he brought them into the tent.

Alors Moïse sortit à la rencontre de son beau-père, et il s'inclina et l'embrassa, et ils se demandèrent mutuellement de leurs nouvelles, puis ils entrèrent dans la tente.

8 And Moses related to his father-in-law all things that the Lord did to Pharao and all the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the labour that had befallen them in the way, and that the Lord had rescued them out of the hand of Pharao, and out of the hand of the Egyptians.

Et Moïse fit à son beau-père le récit de tout ce que l'Éternel avait fait à Pharaon et à l'Egypte pour l'amour d'Israël, de toutes les tribulations qui leur étaient survenues en route, et dont l'Éternel les avait délivrés.

9 And Jothor was amazed at all the good things which the Lord did to them, forasmuch as he rescued them out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharao.

Et Jéthro se réjouit de tout le bien que l'Éternel avait fait à Israël, en le sauvant de la main des Égyptiens.

10 And Jothor said, Blessed be the Lord, because he has rescued them out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharao.

Et Jéthro dit: Béni soit l'Éternel qui vous a sauvés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de Pharaon, qui a sauvé le peuple de la main des Égyptiens.

11 Now know I that the Lord is great above all gods, because of this, wherein they attacked them.

Maintenant je reconnais que l'Éternel est plus grand que tous les dieux, et qu'il l'a été par le moyen même que l'orgueil des Égyptiens avait employé contre eux.

12 And Jothor the father-in-law of Moses took whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for God, for Aaron and all the elders of Israel came to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses before God.

Et Jéthro, beau-père de Moïse, prit un holocauste et des victimes pour les offrir à Dieu; et Aaron et tous les Anciens d'Israël vinrent manger le pain avec le beau-père de Moïse en la présence de Dieu.

13 And it came to pass after the morrow that Moses sat to judge the people, and all the people stood by Moses from morning till evening.

Et le lendemain Moïse siégeait pour rendre la justice au peuple, et le peuple entourait Moïse du matin au soir.

14 And Jothor having seen all that [Moses] did to the people, says, What is this that you do to the people? therefore sit you alone, and all the people stand by you from morning till evening?

Et le beau-père de Moïse voyant tout ce qu'il avait à faire pour le peuple, dit: Quelle fonction remplis-tu là auprès du peuple? Pourquoi es-tu seul à siéger, et tout le peuple est-il à ton audience du matin au soir?

15 And Moses says to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to seek judgement from God.

Et Moïse dit à son beau-père: C'est que le peuple vient à moi pour consulter Dieu.

16 For whenever there is a dispute amongst them, and they come to me, I give judgement upon each, and I teach them the ordinances of God and his law.

Quand ils ont une affaire, ils viennent à moi et je suis arbitre entre une partie et l'autre, et je leur fais connaître les statuts de Dieu et ses lois.

17 And the father-in-law of Moses said to him, You do not this thing rightly,

Et le beau-père de Moïse lui dit: La manière dont tu t'y prends, n'est pas bonne.

18 you will wear away with intolerable weariness, both those and all this people which is with you: this thing is hard, you will not be able to endure it yourself alone.

Tu t'épuises ainsi que ce peuple qui t'entoure; car la chose est trop forte pour toi, tu ne saurais en venir à bout seul.

19 Now then listen to me, and I will advise you, and God shall be with you: be you to the people in the things pertaining to God, and you shall bring their matters to God.

Or sois docile à ma voix, je vais te donner un conseil, et que Dieu soit avec toi! Sois auprès de Dieu le représentant du peuple, et porte les affaires devant Dieu,

20 And you shall testify to them the ordinances of God and his law, and you shall show to them the ways in which they shall walk, and the works which they shall do.

et enseigne-leur les statuts et les lois, et montre-leur la voie qu'ils ont à suivre, et la conduite qu'ils ont à tenir.

21 And do you look out for yourself out of all the people able men, fearing God, righteous men, hating pride, and you shall set over the people captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens.

Et toi cherche parmi tout le peuple des hommes capables, craignant Dieu, des hommes sûrs, ennemis de la cupidité, et prépose-les sur eux comme chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante et chefs de dix.

22 And they shall judge the people at all times, and the too burdensome matter they shall bring to you, but they shall judge the smaller cases; so they shall relieve you and help you.

Et ils rendront la justice au peuple en tout temps, et ils porteront devant toi toutes les grandes affaires, et ils jugeront eux-mêmes les petites causes; ainsi, ils t'allégeront le fardeau et ils le soutiendront avec toi.

23 If you will do this thing, God shall strengthen you, and you shall be able to attend, and all this people shall come with peace into their own place.

Si tu t'y prends de cette sorte et que Dieu t'y autorise, tu pourras y tenir, et tout ce peuple aussi arrivera en bon point à sa destination.

24 And Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did whatever he said to him.

Et Moïse fut docile à la voix de son beau-père, et fit tout ce qu'il avait dit.

25 And Moses chose out able men out of all Israel, and he made them captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties and captains of tens over the people.

Et Moïse choisit des hommes capables parmi tout Israël, et les mit à la tête du peuple, comme chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante, et chefs de dix.

26 And they judged the people at all times; and every too burdensome matter they brought to Moses, but every light matter they judged themselves.

Et ils rendirent la justice au peuple en tout temps: ils portaient devant Moïse les causes difficiles, et ils jugeaient eux-mêmes les petites causes.

27 And Moses dismissed his father-in-law, and he returned to his own land.

Et Moïse prit congé de son beau-père, qui regagna son pays.
