Ecclesiastes 1
1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king of Israel in Jerusalem.
Λόγοι του Εκκλησιαστού, υιού του Δαβίδ, βασιλέως εν Ιερουσαλήμ.
2 Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
Ματαιότης ματαιοτήτων, είπεν ο Εκκλησιαστής· ματαιότης ματαιοτήτων, τα πάντα ματαιότης.
3 What advantage [is there] to a man in all his labour that he takes under the sun?
Τις ωφέλεια εις τον άνθρωπον εκ παντός του μόχθου αυτού, τον οποίον μοχθεί υπό τον ήλιον;
4 A generation goes, and a generation comes: but the earth stands for ever.
Γενεά υπάγει, και γενεά έρχεται· η δε γη διαμένει εις τον αιώνα.
5 And the sun arises, and the sun goes down and draws towards its place;
Και ανατέλλει ο ήλιος, και δύει ο ήλιος· και σπεύδει προς τον τόπον αυτού, όθεν ανέτειλεν.
6 arising there it proceeds southward, and goes round towards the north. The wind goes round and round, and the wind returns to its circuits.
Υπάγει προς τον νότον ο άνεμος, και επιστρέφει προς τον βορράν· ακαταπαύστως περιστρεφόμενος υπάγει, και επανέρχεται επί τους κύκλους αυτού, ο άνεμος.
7 All the rivers run into the sea; and yet the sea is not filled: to the place whence the rivers come, there they return again.
Πάντες οι ποταμοί υπάγουσιν εις την θάλασσαν, και η θάλασσα ποτέ δεν γεμίζει· εις τον τόπον όθεν ρέουσιν οι ποταμοί, εκεί πάλιν επιστρέφουσι, διά να υπάγωσι.
8 All things are full of labour; a man will not be able to speak [of them]: neither shall the eye be satisfied with seeing, neither shall the ear be filled with hearing.
Πάντα τα πράγματα είναι εν κόπω· δεν δύναται άνθρωπος να εκφράση τούτο· ο οφθαλμός δεν χορταίνει βλέπων, και το ωτίον δεν γεμίζει ακούον.
9 What is that which has been? the very thing which shall be: and what is that which has been done? the very thing which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
ό, τι έγεινε, τούτο πάλιν θέλει γείνει· και ό, τι συνέβη, τούτο πάλιν θέλει συμβή· και δεν είναι ουδέν νέον υπό τον ήλιον.
10 [Who is he] that shall speak and say, Behold, this is new? it has already been in the ages that have passed before us.
Υπάρχει πράγμα, περί του οποίου δύναταί τις να είπη, Ιδέ, τούτο είναι νέον; τούτο έγεινεν ήδη εις τους αιώνας οίτινες υπήρξαν προ ημών.
11 There is no memorial to the first things; neither to the things that have been last shall their memorial be with them that shall at the last [time].
Δεν είναι μνήμη των προγεγονότων, ουδέ θέλει είσθαι μνήμη των επιγενησομένων μετά ταύτα, εις τους μέλλοντας να υπάρξωσιν έπειτα.
12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
Εγώ ο Εκκλησιαστής εστάθην βασιλεύς επί τον Ισραήλ εν Ιερουσαλήμ·
13 And I applied my heart to seek out and examine by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven, for God has given to the sons of men an evil trouble to be troubled therewith.
και έδωκα την καρδίαν μου εις το να εκζητήσω και να ερευνήσω διά της σοφίας περί πάντων των γινομένων υπό τον ουρανόν· τον οχληρόν τούτον περισπασμόν ο Θεός έδωκεν εις τους υιούς των ανθρώπων, διά να μοχθώσιν εν αυτώ.
14 I saw all the works that were wrought under the sun; and, saw, all were vanity and waywardness of spirit.
Είδον πάντα τα έργα τα γινόμενα υπό τον ήλιον, και ιδού, τα πάντα ματαιότης και θλίψις πνεύματος.
15 That which is crooked can’t be made straight: and deficiency can’t be numbered.
Το στρεβλόν δεν δύναται να γείνη ευθές, και αι ελλείψεις δεν δύνανται να αριθμηθώσιν.
16 I spoke in my heart, saying, Behold, I am increased, and have acquired wisdom beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem: also I applied my heart to know wisdom and knowledge.
Εγώ ελάλησα εν τη καρδία μου λέγων, Ιδού, εγώ εμεγαλύνθην και ηυξήνθην εις σοφίαν υπέρ πάντας τους υπάρξαντας προ εμού εν Ιερουσαλήμ, και η καρδία μου απήλαυσε πολλήν σοφίαν και γνώσιν.
17 And my heart knew much—wisdom, and knowledge, parables and understanding: I perceived that this also is waywardness of spirit.
Και έδωκα την καρδίαν μου εις το να γνωρίση σοφίαν και εις το να γνωρίση ανοησίαν και αφροσύνην· πλην εγνώρισα ότι και τούτο είναι θλίψις πνεύματος.
18 For in the abundance of wisdom is abundance of knowledge; and he that increases knowledge will increase sorrow.
Διότι εν πολλή σοφία είναι πολλή λύπη· και όστις προσθέτει γνώσιν, προσθέτει πόνον.
