Ecclesiastes 2
1 I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove you with mirth, and behold you good: and, behold, this is also vanity.
Disse eu no meu coração: Ora vem, eu te provarei com alegria, attenta pois para o bem; porém eis que tambem isto era vaidade.
2 I said to laughter, Madness: and to mirth, Why do you this:
Ao riso disse: Estás doido; e á alegria: De que serve esta?
3 And I examined whether my heart would excite my flesh as [with] wine, (though my heart guided [me] in wisdom, ) and [I desired] to lay hold of mirth, until I should see of what kind is the good to the sons of men, which they should do under the sun all the days of their life.
Busquei no meu coração como me daria ao vinho (regendo porém o meu coração com sabedoria), e como reteria a loucura, até vêr o que seria melhor que os filhos dos homens fizessem debaixo do céu, durante o numero dos dias de sua vida.
4 I enlarged my work; I built me houses; I planted me vineyards.
Fiz para mim obras magnificas: edifiquei para mim casas: plantei para mim vinhas.
5 I made me gardens and orchards, and planted in them every kind of fruit tree.
Fiz para mim hortas e jardins, e plantei n'elles arvores de toda a especie de fructa.
6 I made me pools of water, to water from them the timber-bearing wood.
Fiz para mim tanques d'aguas, para regar com elles o bosque em que reverdeciam as arvores.
7 I got servants and maidens, and servants were born to me in the house: also I had abundant possession of flocks and herds, beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem.
Adquiri servos e servas, e tive filhos de casa; tambem tive grande possessão de vaccas e ovelhas, mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalem.
8 Moreover I collected for myself both silver and gold also, and the peculiar treasures of kings and provinces: I procured me singing men and singing women, and delights of the sons of men, a butler and female cupbearers.
Amontoei tambem para mim prata e oiro, e as joias de reis e das provincias; provi-me de cantores e cantoras, e das delicias dos filhos dos homens: d'instrumentos de musica, e de toda a sorte d'instrumentos.
9 So I became great, and advanced beyond all that were before in Jerusalem: also my wisdom was established to me.
E engrandeci, e augmentei mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalem: perseverou tambem comigo a minha sabedoria.
10 And whatever mine eyes desired, I withheld not from them, I withheld not my heart from all my mirth: for my heart rejoiced in all my labour; and this was my portion of all my labour.
E tudo quanto desejaram os meus olhos não lh'o neguei, nem retive o meu coração d'alegria alguma; mas o meu coração se alegrou de todo o meu trabalho, e esta foi a minha porção de todo o meu trabalho.
11 And I looked on all my works which my hands had wrought, and on my labour which I laboured to perform: and behold, all was vanity and waywardness of spirit, and there is no advantage under the sun.
E olhei eu para todas as obras que fizeram as minhas mãos, como tambem para o trabalho que eu, trabalhando, tinha feito, e eis que tudo era vaidade e afflicção d'espirito, e que proveito nenhum havia debaixo do sol.
12 Then I looked on to see wisdom, and madness, and folly: for who is the man who will follow after counsel, in all things where in he employs it?
Então passei á contemplação da sabedoria, e dos desvarios, e da doidice; porque que fará o homem que seguir ao rei? o que outros já fizeram;
13 And I saw that wisdom excels folly, as much as light excels darkness.
Então vi eu que a sabedoria é mais excellente do que a estulticia, quanto a luz é mais excellente do que as trevas.
14 The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walks in darkness: and I perceived, even I, that one event shall happen to them all.
Os olhos do sabio estão na sua cabeça, mas o louco anda em trevas: tambem então entendi eu que o mesmo successo lhes succede a todos.
15 And I said in my heart, As the event of the fool is, so shall it be to me, even to me: and to what purpose have I gained wisdom? I said moreover in my heart, This is also vanity, because the fool speaks of his abundance.
Pelo que eu disse no meu coração: Como succeder ao tolo, assim me succederá a mim; porque pois então busquei eu mais a sabedoria? Então disse no meu coração que tambem isto era vaidade.
16 For there is no remembrance of the wise man with the fool for ever; forasmuch as now [in] the coming days all things are forgotten: and how shall the wise man die with the fool?
Porque nunca haverá mais lembrança do sabio do que do tolo; porquanto de tudo quanto agora ha nos dias futuros total esquecimento haverá. E como morre o sabio? assim como o tolo.
17 So I hated life; because the work that was wrought under the sun was evil before me: for all is vanity and waywardness of spirit.
Pelo que aborreci esta vida, porque a obra que se faz debaixo do sol me parece má; porque tudo é vaidade e afflicção d'espirito.
18 And I hated the whole of my labour which I took under the sun; because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.
Tambem eu aborreci todo o meu trabalho, em que eu trabalhei debaixo do sol, visto que eu havia de deixal-o ao homem que viesse depois de mim.
19 And who knows whether he will be a wise [man] or a fool? and whether he will have power over all my labour in which I laboured, and wherein I grew wise under the sun? this is also vanity.
Porque quem sabe se será sabio ou tolo? todavia se assenhoreará sobre todo o meu trabalho em que trabalhei, e em que me houve sabiamente debaixo do sol; tambem isto é vaidade.
20 so I went about to dismiss from my heart all my labour wherein I had laboured under the sun.
Pelo que eu me appliquei a fazer que o meu coração perdesse a esperança de todo o trabalho, em que trabalhei debaixo do sol.
21 For there is [such] a man that his labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in fortitude; [yet] this man shall give his portion to one who has not laboured therein. This is also vanity and great evil.
Porque ha homem que trabalha com sabedoria, e sciencia, e destreza; todavia deixará o seu trabalho, como porção sua, a um homem que não trabalhou n'elle: tambem isto é vaidade e grande enfado.
22 For it happens to a man in all his labour, and in the purpose of his heart wherein he labours under the sun.
Porque, que mais tem o homem de todo o seu trabalho, e fadiga do seu coração, em que elle anda trabalhando debaixo do sol?
23 For all his days [are days] of sorrows, and vexation of spirit is his; in the night also his heart rests not. This is also vanity.
Porque todos os seus dias são dôres, e a sua occupação é vexação; até de noite não descança o seu coração: tambem isto é vaidade.
24 A man has nothing [really] good to eat, and to drink, and to show his soul [as] good in his trouble. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God.
Não é pois bom para o homem que coma e beba, e que faça gozar a sua alma do bem do seu trabalho? tambem eu vi que isto vem da mão de Deus.
25 For who shall eat, or who shall drink, without him?
(Porque quem pode comer, ou quem o pode gozar melhor do que eu?).
26 For [God] has given to the man who is good in his sight, wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but he has given to the sinner trouble, to add and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God; for this is also vanity and waywardness of spirit.
Porque ao homem que é bom diante d'elle dá Deus sabedoria e conhecimento e alegria, porém ao peccador dá trabalho, para que elle ajunte, e amontoe, para o dar ao bom perante a sua face. Tambem isto é vaidade e afflicção d'espirito.
