Kings IV 22
1 Josias [was] eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name [was] Jedia, daughter of Edeia of Basuroth.
Josias avait huit ans en montant sur le trône, et il régna trente et un ans à Jérusalem; sa mère s’appelait Yedida, fille d’Adaya, de Bocekat.
2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father; he turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.
Il fit ce qui plaît aux yeux de l’Eternel, suivant en tout la voie de son aïeul David, sans s’en écarter à droite ni à gauche.
3 And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josias, in the eighth month, the king sent Sapphan the son of Ezelias the son of Mesollam, the scribe of the house of the Lord, saying,
La dix-huitième année de son règne, le roi Josias envoya son secrétaire Chafan, fils d’Açalyahou, fils de Mechoullam, dans la maison du Seigneur en lui disant:
4 Go up to Chelcias the high priest, and take account of the money that is brought into the house of the Lord, which they that keep the door have collected of the people.
"Va auprès de Hilkiyyahou, le grand-prêtre, et qu’il réunisse tout l’argent qui a été apporté dans la maison du Seigneur et recueilli des mains du peuple par les gardiens du seuil,
5 And let them give it into the hand of the workmen that are appointed in the house of the Lord. And he gave it to the workmen in the house of the Lord, to repair the breaches of the house,
afin qu’on le remette aux directeurs des travaux, chargés de l’entretien du temple, lesquels l’emploieront à payer les ouvriers occupés dans la maison de Dieu à restaurer l’édifice:
6 [even] to the carpenters, and builders, and masons, [and] also to purchase timber and hewn stones, to repair the breaches of the house.
charpentiers, constructeurs, maçons; ils achèteront aussi le bois et les pierres de taille destinés à la réparation du temple.
7 Only they did not call them to account for the money that was given to them, because they dealt faithfully.
Mais on ne demandera pas de comptes aux hommes à qui on confie l’argent, car ils agissent avec loyauté.
8 And Chelcias the high priest said to Saphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Chelcias gave the book to Sapphan, and he read it.
A cette occasion, Hilkiyyahou, le grand-prêtre, dit à Chafan, le secrétaire: "Le livre de la loi a été trouvé par moi dans le temple du Seigneur et il le remit à Chafan, qui le lut.
9 And he went into the house of the Lord to the king, and reported the matter to the king, and said, Your servants have collected the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and have given it into the hand of the workmen that are appointed in the house of the Lord.
Chafan, le secrétaire, revint auprès du roi et lui rendit compte de sa mission: "Tes serviteurs, dit-il, se sont fait verser l’argent qui se trouvait dans le temple, et l’ont remis entre les mains des directeurs des travaux, chargés de l’entretien de la maison du Seigneur."
10 And Sapphan the scribe spoke to the king, saying, Chelcias the priest has given me a book. And Sapphan read it before the king.
Il compléta ainsi son récit: "Hilkiyya, le pontife, m’a remis un livre;" et Chafan en fit la lecture devant le roi.
11 And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the book of the law, that he tore his garments.
En entendant les termes du livre de la loi, le roi déchira ses vêtements,
12 And the king commanded Chelcias the priest, and Achikam the son of Sapphan, and Achobor the son of Michaias, and Sapphan the scribe, and Asaias the king's servant, saying,
et donna cet ordre à Hilkiyya, le pontife, à Ahikam, fils de Chafan, à Akhbor, fils de Mikhaya, à Chafan, le secrétaire, et à Assaya, officier royal:
13 Go, enquire of the Lord for me, and for all the people, and for all Juda, and concerning the words of this book that has been found: for the wrath of the Lord that has been kindled against us [is] great, because our fathers listened not to the words of this book, to do according to all the things written concerning us.
"Allez consulter l’Eternel pour moi, pour le peuple, pour tout Juda, au sujet de ce livre qu’on vient de trouver, car grande est la colère divine allumée contre nous par le refus de nos ancêtres à écouter et à pratiquer les commandements qui nous sont prescrits dans ce livre."
14 So Chelcias the priest went, and Achicam, and Achobor, and Sapphan, and Asaias, to Olda the prophetess, the mother of Sellem the son of Thecuan son of Aras, keeper of the robes; and she lived in Jerusalem in Masena; and they spoke to her.
Hilkiyyahou, le pontife, Ahikam, Akhbor, Chafan et Assaya se rendirent auprès de la prophétesse Houlda, femme du gardien des vêtements, Challoum, fils de Tikva, fils de Harhas; elle demeurait à Jérusalem dans le deuxième quartier. Quand ils lui eurent parlé,
15 And she said to them, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, Say to the man that sent you to me,
elle leur répliqua: "Voici ce qu’a dit l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël: Annoncez à l’homme qui vous a envoyés auprès de moi.
16 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I bring evil upon this place, and upon them that dwell in it, [even] all the words of the book which the king of Juda has read:
Ainsi a parlé l’Eternel: Je vais amener le malheur sur cette contrée et ses habitants, toutes les choses prédites dans le livre qu’a lu le roi de Juda,
17 because they have forsaken me, and burnt incense to other gods, that they might provoke me with the works of their hands: therefore my wrath shall burn forth against this place, and shall not be quenched.
parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné et ont offert l’encens à des dieux étrangers, m’irritant par toutes les œuvres de leurs mains; aussi ma colère s’est-elle allumée contre cette contrée, pour ne plus s’éteindre.
18 And to the king of Juda that sent you to enquire of the Lord, —thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, [As for] the words which you have heard;
Quant au roi de Juda qui vous envoie pour consulter l’Eternel, voici ce que vous lui direz: Ainsi a parlé l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, au sujet de ce que tu viens d’entendre:
19 because your heart was softened, and you was humbled before [me], when you heard all that I spoke against this place, and against the inhabitants of it, that it should be utterly destroyed and accursed, and you did rend your garments, and weep before me; I also have heard, says the Lord.
Puisque ton cœur s’est attendri, et que tu t’es humilié devant l’Eternel en entendant que j’ai décrété la désolation et la malédiction contre cette contrée et ses habitants, puisque tu as déchiré tes vêtements et versé des larmes devant moi, de mon côté, je t’ai exaucé, dit l’Eternel.
20 It shall not be so [therefore]: behold, I [will] add you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your tomb in peace, and your eyes shall not see [any] amongst all the evils which I bring upon this place.
Je te réunirai donc à tes ancêtres, tu iras les rejoindre en paix dans la tombe, et tes yeux ne verront pas les malheurs que je déchaînerai sur cette contrée." Ils rendirent compte de leur mission au roi.
