Kings IV 22
1 Josias [was] eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name [was] Jedia, daughter of Edeia of Basuroth.
Josias avait huit ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna trente et un ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Idida, fille d’Hadaï, de Bésécath.
2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father; he turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.
Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de Yahweh, et il marcha entièrement dans la voie de David, son père, et il ne s’en détourna ni à droite ni à gauche.
3 And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josias, in the eighth month, the king sent Sapphan the son of Ezelias the son of Mesollam, the scribe of the house of the Lord, saying,
La dix-huitième année du roi Josias, le roi envoya dans la maison de Yahweh Saphan, le secrétaire, fils d’Aslia, fils de Messulam, en disant:
4 Go up to Chelcias the high priest, and take account of the money that is brought into the house of the Lord, which they that keep the door have collected of the people.
« Monte vers Helcias, le grand prêtre, et qu’il tienne prêt l’argent qui a été apporté dans la maison de Yahweh, et que les gardiens de la porte ont recueilli du peuple.
5 And let them give it into the hand of the workmen that are appointed in the house of the Lord. And he gave it to the workmen in the house of the Lord, to repair the breaches of the house,
On remettra cet argent entre les mains de ceux qui font exécuter l’ouvrage, qui sont établis surveillants dans la maison de Yahweh, et ils le donneront à ceux qui travaillent à l’œuvre de la maison de Yahweh, pour réparer les brèches de la maison,
6 [even] to the carpenters, and builders, and masons, [and] also to purchase timber and hewn stones, to repair the breaches of the house.
aux charpentiers, aux manœuvres et aux maçons, et ils l’emploieront à acheter le bois et les pierres de taille pour réparer la maison.
7 Only they did not call them to account for the money that was given to them, because they dealt faithfully.
Mais on ne leur demandera pas de comptes pour l’argent remis entre leur mains, car ils se conduisent avec probité. »
8 And Chelcias the high priest said to Saphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Chelcias gave the book to Sapphan, and he read it.
Alors Helcias, le grand prêtre, dit à Saphan, le secrétaire: « J’ai trouvé le livre de la Loi dans la maison de Yahweh. » Et Helcias donna le livre à Saphan, qui le lut.
9 And he went into the house of the Lord to the king, and reported the matter to the king, and said, Your servants have collected the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and have given it into the hand of the workmen that are appointed in the house of the Lord.
Puis Saphan, le secrétaire, revint vers le roi et rendit compte au roi en disant: « Tes serviteurs ont vidé l’argent qui se trouvait dans la maison, et l’ont remis entre les mains de ceux qui font exécuter l’ouvrage, qui sont établis surveillants dans la maison de Yahweh. »
10 And Sapphan the scribe spoke to the king, saying, Chelcias the priest has given me a book. And Sapphan read it before the king.
Saphan, le secrétaire, fit encore au roi cette communication: « Le prêtre Helcias m’a donné un livre. » Et Saphan le lut devant le roi.
11 And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the book of the law, that he tore his garments.
Lorsque le roi eut entendu les paroles du livre de la Loi, il déchira ses vêtements;
12 And the king commanded Chelcias the priest, and Achikam the son of Sapphan, and Achobor the son of Michaias, and Sapphan the scribe, and Asaias the king's servant, saying,
et il donna cet ordre au prêtre Helcias, à Ahicam, fils de Saphan, à Achobor, fils de Micha, à Saphan, le secrétaire, et à Asaïas, serviteur du roi:
13 Go, enquire of the Lord for me, and for all the people, and for all Juda, and concerning the words of this book that has been found: for the wrath of the Lord that has been kindled against us [is] great, because our fathers listened not to the words of this book, to do according to all the things written concerning us.
« Allez consulter Yahweh pour moi, pour le peuple et pour tout Juda au sujet des paroles de ce livre qu’on a trouvé; car grande est la colère de Yahweh qui s’est enflammée contre nous, parce que nos pères n’ont pas obéi aux paroles de ce livre, en faisant tout ce qui nous est prescrit. »
14 So Chelcias the priest went, and Achicam, and Achobor, and Sapphan, and Asaias, to Olda the prophetess, the mother of Sellem the son of Thecuan son of Aras, keeper of the robes; and she lived in Jerusalem in Masena; and they spoke to her.
Le prêtre Helcias, Ahicam, Achobor, Saphan et Asaïas se rendirent auprès de la prophétesse Holda, femme de Sellum, fils de Thécua, fils d’Araas, gardien des vêtements; elle habitait à Jérusalem, dans le second quartier. Lorsqu’ils lui eurent parlé,
15 And she said to them, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, Say to the man that sent you to me,
elle leur dit: « Ainsi dit Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël: Dites à l’homme qui vous a envoyés vers moi:
16 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I bring evil upon this place, and upon them that dwell in it, [even] all the words of the book which the king of Juda has read:
Ainsi dit Yahweh: Voici que je vais faire venir des malheurs sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants, selon toutes les paroles du livre qu’a lu le roi de Juda.
17 because they have forsaken me, and burnt incense to other gods, that they might provoke me with the works of their hands: therefore my wrath shall burn forth against this place, and shall not be quenched.
Parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné et qu’ils ont offerts des parfums à d’autres dieux, de manière à m’irriter par tous les ouvrages de leurs mains, ma colère s’est enflammée contre ce lieu, et elle ne s’éteindra point.
18 And to the king of Juda that sent you to enquire of the Lord, —thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, [As for] the words which you have heard;
Et vous direz au roi de Juda, qui vous a envoyés pour consulter Yahweh: Ainsi dit Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël: Quant aux paroles que tu as entendues,
19 because your heart was softened, and you was humbled before [me], when you heard all that I spoke against this place, and against the inhabitants of it, that it should be utterly destroyed and accursed, and you did rend your garments, and weep before me; I also have heard, says the Lord.
parce que ton cœur s’est repenti et que tu t’es humilié devant Yahweh en entendant ce que j’ai prononcé contre ce lieu et contre ses habitants, savoir qu’ils seront un objet d’épouvante et de malédiction, et parce que tu as déchiré tes vêtements et pleuré devant moi, moi aussi je t’ai entendu, oracle de Yahweh.
20 It shall not be so [therefore]: behold, I [will] add you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your tomb in peace, and your eyes shall not see [any] amongst all the evils which I bring upon this place.
C’est pourquoi, voici que je te recueillerai auprès de tes pères; tu seras recueilli en paix dans ton sépulcre, et tes yeux ne verront pas tous les malheurs que je ferai venir sur ce lieu. » Ils rapportèrent au roi cette réponse.
