Chronicles I 23
1 And David was old and full of days; and he made Solomon his son king over Israel in his stead.
Toen David oud was geworden en hoogbejaard, verhief hij zijn zoon Salomon tot koning van Israël,
2 And he assembled all the chief men of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites.
en riep alle bestuurders van Israël met de priesters en levieten bijeen.
3 And the Levites numbered [themselves] from thirty years old and upward; and their number by their polls amounted to thirty and eight thousand men.
En toen de levieten boven de dertig jaar waren geteld, bleek het aantal mannelijke personen acht en dertigduizend te bedragen.
4 Of the overseers over the works of the house of the Lord [there were] twenty-four thousand, and [there were] six thousand scribes and judges;
En David beval, dat vier en twintigduizend van hen zouden worden belast met de dienst in het heiligdom van Jahweh, dat zesduizend zouden worden aangesteld als beambten en rechters,
5 and four thousand doorkeepers, and four thousand to praise the Lord with instruments which he made to praise the Lord.
en dat vierduizend Jahweh zouden loven op de instrumenten, die hij daartoe had laten vervaardigen.
6 And David divided them [into] daily courses, for the sons of Levi, for Gedson, Caath, and Merari.
Bovendien deelde David hen in groepen in, naar gelang ze afstamden van Gersjon, Kehat en Merari, de zonen van Levi.
7 And for [the family of] Gedson, Edan, and Semei.
De zonen van Gersjon waren Ladan en Sjimi.
8 The sons of Edan [were] Jeiel, the chief, and Zethan, and Joel, three.
De zonen van Ladan waren Jechiël, het opperhoofd, met Zetam en Joël, in het geheel drie;
9 The sons of Semei; Salomith, Jeiel, and Dan, three: these [were] the chiefs of the families of Edan.
die van Sjimi waren Sjelomit, Chaziël en Haran, in het geheel drie. Dit waren de familiehoofden van het geslacht Ladan.
10 And to the sons of Semei, Jeth, and Ziza, and Joas, and Beria: these [were] the four sons of Semei.
De zonen van Sjimi waren Jáchat, Zina, Jeöesj en Beria; dit waren de zonen van Sjimi, in het geheel vier.
11 And Jeth was the chief, and Ziza the second: and Joas and Beria did not multiply sons, and they became [only] one reckoning according to the house of their father.
Jáchat was het opperhoofd, en Zina de tweede; Jeöesj en Beria werden in hun familie als een ambtsgroep gerekend, omdat ze weinig kinderen hadden.
12 The sons of Caath; Ambram, Isaar, Chebron, Oziel, four.
De zonen van Kehat waren Amram, Jishar, Chebron en Oezziël, in het geheel vier.
13 The sons of Ambram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was appointed for the consecration of the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the Lord, to minister and bless in his name for ever.
De zonen van Amram waren Aäron en Moses. Aäron zelf en zijn afstammelingen waren voor immer afgezonderd en voor de hoogheilige bediening gewijd, om voor altijd offers op te dragen aan Jahweh, Hem te dienen en in zijn Naam te zegenen.
14 And [as for] Moses the man of God, his sons were reckoned to the tribe of Levi.
Moses was de man Gods, maar de zonen van Moses werden weer tot de stam der levieten gerekend.
15 The sons of Moses; Gersam, and Eliezer.
Het waren Gersjom en Eliézer.
16 The sons of Gersam; Subael the chief.
De zoon van Gersjom was Sjeboeël, een opperhoofd;
17 And the sons of Eliezer were, Rabia the chief: and Eliezer had no other sons; but the sons of Rabia were very greatly multiplied.
die van Eliézer was Rechabja, eveneens een opperhoofd. Eliézer zelf had geen andere kinderen, maar Rechabja had er zeer veel.
18 The sons of Isaar; Salomoth the chief.
De zoon van Jishar was Sjelomit, een opperhoofd.
19 The sons of Chebron; Jeria the chief, Amaria the second, Jeziel the third, Jekemias the fourth.
De zonen van Chebron waren Jeri-jáhoe, het opperhoofd, Amarja, de tweede, Jachaziël de derde, Jekamam de vierde.
20 The sons of Oziel; Micha the chief, and Isia the second.
De zonen van Oezziël waren Mika, het opperhoofd, en Jissji-ja, de tweede.
21 The sons of Merari; Mooli, and Musi: the sons of Mooli; Eleazar, and Kis.
De zonen van Merari waren Machli en Moesji. De zonen van Machli waren Elazar en Kisj.
22 And Eleazar died, and he had no sons, but daughters: and the sons of Kis, their brethren, took them.
Elazar stierf zonder zonen na te laten; hij had alleen maar dochters, die door hun neven, de zonen van Kisj, werden gehuwd.
23 The sons of Musi; Mooli, and Eder, and Jarimoth, three.
De zonen van Moesji waren Machli, Éder en Jeremot, in het geheel drie.
24 These [are] the sons of Levi according to the houses of their fathers; chiefs of their families according to their numbering, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, doing the works of service of the house of the Lord, from twenty years old and upward.
Dit waren dus de familiehoofden boven de dertig jaar van de gemonsterde levietische families, die met name en persoonlijk waren aangewezen, om de dienst te verrichten in de tempel van Jahweh.
25 For David said, The Lord God of Israel has given rest to his people, and has taken up his abode in Jerusalem for ever.
David bepaalde: Nu Jahweh, de God van Israël, zijn volk rust heeft geschonken, en voor altijd in Jerusalem woont,
26 And the Levites bore not the tabernacle, and all the vessels of it for its service.
behoeven de levieten niet meer de tabernakel te dragen met heel zijn toebehoren voor de eredienst.
27 For by the last words of David was the number of the Levites [taken] from twenty years old and upward.
Later werd volgens de laatste aanwijzingen van David het aantal levieten berekend van twintig jaar af en ouder.
28 For he appointed them to wait on Aaron, to minister in the house of the Lord, over the courts, and over the chambers, and over the purification of all the holy things, and over the works of the service of the house of God;
Nu konden zij de zonen van Aäron behulpzaam zijn bij de dienst in het huis van Jahweh, door het toezicht op de voorhoven en zalen, het rein houden van alle gewijde voorwerpen, en het verrichten van de andere werkzaamheden die in het huis Gods te doen vielen.
29 and for the show-bread, and for the fine flour of the meat-offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for the fried cake, and for the dough, and for every measure;
Bovendien moesten ze zorgen voor de toonbroden, de meelbloem voor het spijsoffer, en de ongezuurde vladen, voor het bakwerk en de mengsels, en voor alle inhouds- en lengtematen.
30 and to stand in the morning to praise and give thanks to the Lord, and so in the evening;
Verder moesten ze elke morgen, en ‘s avonds eveneens, gereed staan, om Jahweh lof en dank te zingen.
31 and [to be] over all the whole burnt offerings that were offered up to the Lord on the sabbaths, and at the new moons, and at the feasts, by number, according to the order [given] to them, continually before the Lord.
Daarenboven moesten ze zorgen voor al wat er nodig was voor de brandoffers, die aan Jahweh werden opgedragen op sabbatten, nieuwe manen en hoogtijden, opdat er voortdurend zoveel aan Jahweh werden opgedragen, als voorgeschreven was.
32 And they are to keep the charge of the tabernacle of witness, and the charge of the holy place, and the charges of the sons of Aaron their brethren, to minister in the house of the Lord.
Zo moesten ze de dienst waarnemen bij de openbaringstent en bij het Heilige, en hun broeders, de zonen van Aäron, behulpzaam zijn bij de dienst in het huis van Jahweh.
